      @@ytzpilot not the three musketeers more like Larry, Mo and Curly (three stooges). This government is the real form of the metaphor of a clown car on fire flying off a cliff with no hospital at the bottom of it. We should be taking bets on a National 1 term government that is done so much damage to never be voted in again. They seem to set new levels of fail when you thinks it's not poss ible to do worse and are so delusional and disconnected it's like they are from a parallel reality.... Nightmare.

    To be clear: the reason Project IRex was as much as it was is because those ports *need* those upgrades. They weren't spending that money for sh*ts and giggles. Hell, the project in Picton had already broken ground when they canned it. Now, the port operators will have to pay for those necessary upgrades, which will be passed on to us in the form of higher port fees and fares for crossings (and will probably cost more, to boot).
    On top of that, we're going to get smaller, less-future-proof ferries than we would have done, and we'll probably pay more for them, plus we still have to pay god knows how much to Hyundai Heavy in break fees. They'll probably also not be rail-enabled, which means KiwiRail will have to build a rail manufacturing plant in the South Island, as they currently all come over on the Interislander. So tell me, how precisely are we *saving* money? This govt is a disgrace.

  • @melclark1066

    So, they are replacing three ferries with two, with a total capacity less than the current three, and the prospect of them being rail enabled is in doubt. Bloody criminal.😪🥵

    There are 2 brand new ferries, Spirit of Tasmania IV and V. currently stored in Scotland, available for lease from the Australians who right now cannot use them until upgraded docking facilities are made available in 2027 or later. These ferries are costing the owners $50,000 a week in storage fees ....a perfect quick fix for NZ. These ferries are not Rail equipped.

  • @Kelvinpaul4
    @Kelvinpaul4 19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +7

    Why even bother reporting on a "maybe". Willis's option will not be better or cheaper than IRex. The 3 billion for IRex was including the termal upgrades and the rail enabled Hyundai ferries which were individually costed at $500 million, that's what it may cost to break the contract with Hyundai. Willis should resign as Minister of Finance and take ownership of her mistake in canceling the IRex project, it was a big and expensive bad decision made so casually.

    • @rp7784
      @rp7784 6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @JamesGuarmillo Again, I'm not sure what you mean by financial responsibility.
      If you mean delivering projects at a cheaper cost and then having to pay more down the road when it's realised that final decision wasn't adequate then that's not financial responsibility, that's cheap mismanagement on the grounds of being shortsighted.
      Replacing the Ferris alone were never going to cost just 300 million, not at the scale we need.
      Labour had a program that would not only have delivered larger Ferries that had way more capacity for current and future freight volumes that would have been capable of transporting rail freight using an advanced hybrid engine system, but the program also included the upgrade of the ferry terminals, seismic strengthening and upgrades to the surrounding road and rail infrastructure. Basically it was a project to not only upgrade the current infrastructure but future proof it for growing freight and passenger volumes as well as further investment into the rail network, which explains the inflated prices tag.
      National are only looking to purchase 2 Ferries that might be rail enabled with the same or less capacity than our current ones and already are projected to cost quite a bit of money, with no upgrades to land infrastructure.
      That isn't financial responsibility because it's terrible value for money in the long run and that is exactly what NZ has issues with.

    so we are going to reduce our productivity and raise the prices and the reason of the private company to buy 49% to cash in to nz pocketbooks.they will raise the price of every person car and goods that have to cross the straight. the only way for nz to make money as a country is to look at successful countries like China and start building infrastructure for the future, not waste money on stop gap measures for the past needs. the govt needs to control 100% of our essential services and having a private company there to suck profit out of peoples wallets will just introduce a profit motive for several people where we want to have a profit motive for 5 million.
