This week, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Raman Kirpal and Anand Vardhan are joined by senior journalist and author Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay and EastMojo’s Karma Paljor.
The conversation begins with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s first post-poll remarks, election results in the northeastern states, Maharashtra and Odisha, and the new NDA cabinet.
On speculation about the RSS-BJP relationship in the wake of the results, Nilanjan says, “The animosity has been there. The RSS has had problems with the BJP for several reasons. One of them is the cult of Modi. We know RSS is not in favour of vyakti poojan.”
Anand adds that the BJP’s restricted Hindutva mandate this time means that they will have to do “routine patrolling of Hindu interest and not pursue any ambitious ideological project”.
About elections in the north east, Karma says, “Gaurav Gogoi’s win was not a surprise…what surprised me was Manipur. I thought the fear factor would still be there.”
Commenting on the “unpredictable” results in Maharashtra, Nilanjan adds, “For the people, Balasaheb’s legacy is with Uddhav (Thackeray). They believe only Sharad Pawar can decide what happens with the NCP. Ajit is no one.”

Not entirely true, but I get where you're coming from. They should have trimmed the Gujrati bandwagon in the first term... It may be too late now for the RSS - but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are insincere.

RSS knew what the outcome of this election would be better than anyone. They work grassroot and know the pulse of people and they could predict a change. So now they want to distance themselves from BJP until people's anger subside. This is the only explanation for Mohan Bhagwat sudden concern for Manipur and Indians bhai chaara. Hence all this lip service. After a few months, RSS and BJP will do a reconciliation drama. These people cannot be trusted.
I sincerely think that the Mohan Bhagwat's speech should be taken at face value.
If the reconciliation happens without fundamental changes in the way the BJP is functioning, then we can take note, and move forward.
Otherwise, we are part of the CANCEL Culture brigade, and are just part of a camp.
Recalling the consensus politics of our founding fathers, this would be the way to go....IMHO.

One could call an indian a HIndu as the Germans, Norwegians, British etc. but when religion is used to make that identity, non-Hindus by religion will not accept that.
