About The Actress-
Laxmi Chhaya, the dancing star of Hindi film industry. She was a well known actress and dancer who appeared in more than 55 Bollywood and Marathi films in the 1960s and 1970s, including Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Teesri Manzil, Naunihal (1967), Mere Huzoor (1968) and Duniya.
Laxmi Chhaya was nine when she appeared in her first film Talaq (1958) - director Mahesh Kaul had spotted her among the guests on the sets. Three years later came Bada Aadmi (1961) which established her as a dancing star. She appeared as a dancer in many Hindi Films of the 60s and 70s. Although a very versatile actress, she was never able to make it big as a leading lady. One of the few films where she was cast as a heroine including Jahan Jagey Wahan Savera opposite Kumar Ajit (Dharmendra’s brother) and Jinki Duniya Mein Roshni Nahin Hoti opposite Vikram were shelved, further ruining her chances as the leading lady. She faded from the film scene in the early 1980s.
After retiring from cinema, Chhaya taught dancing to indigent children. She died of cancer in Mumbai on May 9, 2004 at the age of 56. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

How terribly sad. Shame on Bollywood actresses who pushed off Laxmi Chaaya. Sharmila Tagore, Asha Parekh, Mumtaz (she forgot her Boxer type C movie roles?) - how do these old women live with themselves knowing what they did - still dragging themselves on to reality programs - no one wants to see them. Laxmi Chaaya hardly made it to mid 50's. Perhaps this clip should be played in their presence. Rest in Peace Laxmi Chaaya.

Laxmi chhaya ji no doubt was beautiful v good actress but in those days audience was v selective choose in selecting, male or female in lead roll. Audience didn't accept Laxmi ji in lead roll, no doubt she did remembering item songs competing helen, Bindu, jayshree n meena T. She came in to light in Mera gaon Mera Desh Bec 3 songs in film was super hit n v nice picturised songs in film.

An excellent dancer and beautiful lady Laxmi Chhaya ji had some of the best songs picturised on her, 3 most popular songs, aaya aaya aatariya pe, haye sharmau and maar diya jayen from Mera Gaon Mera Desh were so great that Asha Parekh seemed like a second lead actor, just like Aruna Irani overshadowed Asha ji in Carvaan. Pity, due to some leading ladies, Laxmi Chhaya ji never got her dues.
She will be dearly remembered for her beautiful dances and cheerful smile.
