Young Black Pines "Corky Bark" Bonsai what you need to do when starting out

These ten young corky bark Japanese black pine stock needed some styling to eliminate the negative parts of their growth. The beautiful corky bark is starting to show on them and needs to be enhanced to really show off their best features. Important steps you need to do if you are new to bonsai and new to black pines. These ten trees will be for sale at the upcoming Bonsai Northwest Melbourne Exhibition 20-21 April 2024 at the Footscray community art centre, 45 Moreland st Footscray 10am to 4pm.

Doing this work where you make decisions can be done mid summer to winter. Don’t do this in spring when the tree is vigorously growing.

Do they back bud as well after removing the old needles. My Radiata seems to bb better where the needles are left?

Back budding happens when I cut back hard, so these should pop like crazy as the roots have so much energy to push but a lot of the foliage has been removed so should push new buds everywhere.

How long did they grow “wild” before this taming?

For this round of growth it was 3 years. Before that they were much smaller and had to fatten up so was another 3-5 years growth before cutting back.

Is it the best time of year to prune any kind of pine ?

When it comes to stock then yes it can be done now. I would avoid pruning branches off established and refined trees.

Other than a few moments where the audio level changes, this was a great vid, very informative. What I liked best is how you gave reasons for your branch selections rather than just working away at the tree willy-nilly. This really helps other bonsai enthusiasts make their own decisions when approaching similar pines.

Grafted onto standard black pine but must be done low so you can’t see the graft.
