  • The South African-built Volkswagen Polo was a top seller globally but has a special place in the hearts of South Africans. Many Polos have been bought as first cars, last cars and life-changing cars, renowned for their relatively affordable cost and reliability. We explain exactly what you should look for when buying a VW Polo on the used market.
Guest presenter Juliet McGuire was once a Polo owner and goes through what common problems to look out for and how to test drive a Polo. How much does it cost to service a Polo? We dig into the parts pricing of this sought after used car choice.

From a previous 1.2 tsi owner. Timing belt and water pump must be replaced at 120 000 kms and it's not cheap. The suspension bushes are soft and will perish sooner than other cars in it's class. Keep an eye on engine mounts. Look out for water leaks as well. Check the water pump, radiator and the charge air cooler. Also keep an eye on the rear tail lights. Mine leaked causing a short and blew my Comfort controller. Last time I checked that controller costs R11k. I took mine to a auto elec and he fixed it for R5k. Head gasket will go at about 200k kms, keep an eye on your oil and if you see milk, replace head gasket immediately. Also at about 200k kms keep an eye on the turbo, the seals will start to perish and if that turbo blows, bye bye engine. Also service the aircon compressor every 100k kms. Electronics are okay, at least mine was. They are very nice cars to drive, but be warned, VW has a terrible reliability record. If you decide to get one make sure it has full service history and if you can, get one with under 100 000 kms and put aside slot of money for that timing belt service. Also do not do what VW says about 15 000km service interval and service it every 10 000kms. Good luck.

When it comes to used cars i'd consider Re-Driven, repair-guy or mechanic channels....you can tell these car journ'os don't know much about car reliability.
TSI's are actually one of the the least reliable cars in the market especially ones with a DSG gearbox, honestly I don't understand the resale values of these cars in SA they don't seem to depreciate as much as in other markets 🤷‍♂️, for me TDIs are not great but a much better bet. However, you are a lot safer owning a Japanese car (Toyota, Mazda or Suzuki)....unless you have good relationships with your mechanic or you don't mind DIY maintenance and repairs I'd walk away from all used European vehicles (including Merc's,BMW's, and Audi's) unless its simple versions like Vivo 1.4 or 1.6 with no turbos.
So if 1 in a 100 people are coming to a video's coment section and saying "my brother had one and nothing went wrong" is the worst advice to take😅, but it's your money not mine, i own a Renault anyway and I just want buy a schambok to beat it with at this point🤦‍♂️.

when it comes to the polo, i love new tech but personally having owned a polo vivo 1.6 i would say dont waste your time with a TSI. they nice and punchy but they pricey to fix and the fact the 1.6 gives you decent power, dont worry about turbo lags. also very affordable to maintain and will run literally for thousands of KM. stick to naturally aspirated cars when you care for maintenance 1.4/1.6 is your best best.

This was probably the best Polo ever made. Love the design and prefer this design to the newer ones. Just checked the Getworth website and this car is going for R195k! That’s just insane for a 7 to 8 year old car. Maybe put a bit more and you could get yourself a Starlet or Baleno. You could even get yourself a one or two year old Clio for just over R220k.
As a person who recently purchased a 8 year old Fiesta mk7, if you go for a car like this, maybe have some spare cash to do maintenance. Even the best maintained car could give you issues. To change the timing belt for Fiesta, it costs around R15k to R20k. And other stuff could go wrong so be prepared by having spare cash.

My 2017 Tsi Highline DSG, still in good condition, i did 120 000KM service this year in Feb, but overall alot of components have been changed since. Water pump, suspension, cv joints, wheel bearings, gear wiring("remove car from P warning")...etc. If i look at all the job carts on my car, literally it cost over 50k on maintenance with manufacturer. My advice to VW owners, make sure you have maintenance plan. I still have maintenance plan active on mine and all these were taken care of. Overall i am happy with this car.

My daughter owns a 1.2TDi Blue motion. Last week she drove from Cape Town to PE - it took about 8 hours. They stayed there from the Saturday for the duration of a Hockey-tournament until the following Sunday. On the morning of their departure back home the car's gear got stuck in reverse gear (from cold). After a long struggle and after letting it idle until it warms up it eventually came out of reverse but could only select 2nd and 4th initially, but after a while it luckily could select the other gears as well. She then took the long road back to Cape Town praying for no issues on the way back. Intermittently she struggled then to select 2nd and 4th again but closer to home the problem eventually became less and suddenly disappeared up till now. No sign of a problem. The other problem which I fail to understand is the DPF indicator light that came on after about an hours drive from PE. She put in an injector - and turbo cleaner from Wynns ( she couldn't find the DPF - cleaner at the time). After a while the light on the dash went out but came back on again after 2 hours drive . It never went off again up till now. How does one explain that after such a long drive on end. How does Juliet explain this? She talks about taking the car for a 15 minute drive and the light will go away again. What about a 16-hour drive starting with no light and end up with one burning...? Can someone explain the gearbox-issues perhaps ? Is that maybe a beginning of a problem later on with the gearbox?

Agree on the timing belt at 120000, the 120000 service will cost R12000 and up. I traded my problem free (no waterpump or other issues, just services at 15000km) 1.2 TSi at 130000km for a 1.0 TSi DSG now at 99000, no problems.
