The Reflection
In a quiet town on the edge of a dark forest lived two adventurous siblings, Sarah and Liam. One chilly October evening, they ventured into their grandmother’s attic, a place filled with old furniture and mysterious relics. Among them was a peculiar mirror their grandmother always warned them about.
The mirror’s golden frame, adorned with snake and moon carvings, seemed alive, and its surface gleamed even in dim light. Intrigued, Sarah and Liam pulled off the sheet covering it and wiped away the dust. Suddenly, Sarah noticed something unsettling. “Liam,” she whispered, “our reflections... they aren’t moving like us.”
Liam stared, and to their horror, Sarah’s reflection raised its hand independently, knocking on the glass. The siblings backed away as the mirror shimmered like rippling water, and to their shock, their reflections stepped out!
The mirror versions of Sarah and Liam looked identical but with unnerving smiles and glowing eyes. Speaking in unison, they announced, “You’ve opened the portal. To close it, you must win our game-a scavenger hunt to find five objects. Fail, and we switch places forever.”
The siblings nervously agreed, and the first riddle appeared:
I tick in the hall, but I am not alive. Find me quickly, or you may not survive.
“The clock!” Sarah guessed. They raced to the hall and found a silver key hidden in an antique clock.
Back in the attic, the next riddle glowed:
I hold the stories of ages past. Open my pages, and find the last.
Liam recalled an old book in their grandmother’s study. Within its pages, they found a golden feather.
Three riddles later, they uncovered all but one object: a ruby under a loose kitchen floorboard. With every solved riddle, the mirror-world grew darker, and the doppelgängers more sinister.
The final riddle was the hardest:
The face you know, the one that glows. To break the spell, return what shows.
“The mirror itself!” Sarah realized. They brought the objects to the attic and placed them in front of the mirror. But instead of ending the game, the doppelgängers stepped closer.
“One piece is missing,” they sneered, “your reflections!”
The mirror began to swirl, pulling Sarah and Liam toward it. Panicked, Sarah grabbed the silver key and thrust it at the mirror. The objects glowed brightly, and with a loud crack, the doppelgängers were sucked back into the mirror.
The room went still. Their grandmother rushed in, alarmed. “What happened?”
Sarah and Liam hugged her tightly. “The mirror-it’s haunted! But we stopped it.”
Grandma smiled knowingly, covering the mirror once more. “Some things are best left untouched. Let’s hope it stays quiet now.”
From that night, Sarah and Liam avoided mirrors, knowing some secrets were better left unseen. Yet whispers lingered: on moonlit nights, the attic mirror’s surface might ripple, showing more than just a reflection.
