  • Gay icon and Latin pop trailblazer Gloria Estefan talks about being in a “really good place” with her 25-year-old daughter Emily, who is openly queer. After working on their relationship in therapy, they’re continuing those conversations during the Facebook Watch series "Red Table Talk: The Estefans," which also features Gloria’s niece, actress and model Lili Estefan.
The second episode ( watch/?v=808...) is an emotional bloodletting during which Emily confronts the legendary icon about how she reacted after Emily came out to her: “I was like, ‘Hey, I’m in love with this girl,’” Emily says to her mother about her relationship with partner Gemeny Hernandez. “The first thing you said was, ‘If you tell your grandma and she dies, her blood is on your hands.’”
During the episode, Gloria tells Emily she’s remembering the conversation “in a different way.”

I'm not a celebrity kid but yet my parents were liberal and open minded it took me ages to come out. It was in my head, it was more my issue. And coming out is indeed more than telling your parents... coming out to yourself is the hardest for most or at least many and sometime you develop fears and szenarios in your head why not to or what could happen... right, family dynamics, unexpected and overwhelming, and of course in Emily's case the public would know, unlike with most of us. Instead of focusing if Gloria might have done something wrong, we should really appreciate showing how wrong communication can go, unintendedly and both sides have to be patient. For us sometimes the moment it's clear for us - maybe after a long inner process - we expect our relatives and friends to adapt quickly and built up a certain expectation for them to react. The tiniest mistone or misunderstanding can ruin it. But it's brave what both did, Emily and Gloria to lay it open.

This was such a great interview - I love hearing Gloria’s advice and observations on how everyone is different and we just need to take time to listen carefully and speak carefully.

Family dynamics.... they are all unique and belong to each family. We, as an audience, only part of the iceberg. I’m glad the episode allowed us to see how this situation allowed them to come together and closer.

This was a difficult conversation to watch, I had to watch it in 4 separate chunks... Gloria Is an Amazing advocate of the LGBT community, but she is articulatey explaining her very personal experience within it. The journey is hard to fathom... But Gloria is a supporter of minorities and that is so clear to see 👌

I am an Estefanatic! Have been since I was 12, I'm 45. 😁❤️Sometimes people forget that Gloria wears many titles, (Singer, wife, mother, daughter, etc.) but, "perfect" is not one of them. She is human. A latina that comes from a culture that back then frowned upon the lgbtq+ more so than it does now. I'm a non-binary, masculine, Puerto Rican and it was drilled into me
that homosexuality is a one way ticket to hell. Even thinking about doing anything gay with anyone will damn you.
Gloria may have seen her own words to Em about coming out to her as being supportive but I know when I was struggling as a teen, my mom called me out, even though I knew she had gay friends, my mom would have lost her sh*t! I know that for a fact. So, I denied it. I wasn't sure and I wasn't ready.
My grandmother told me if any of her grandchildren came out to her that, that would not stop her from loving them. After she said what she had to say, she gave me the biggest hug and went on about her business.
My abuela gave me the choice to "come out" or keep that to myself.
I can see it from all sides. Gloria and Em love each other, no denying that, they have beautiful souls but they are still human.

The hell with the public, which will ALWAYS have their own opinion. This is a family affair & just that celebrity or not. I feel the family is handling it the correct way. Emily: Always do what is right for you & be happy.

You should just see the person and not whoever they love it’s not as if they choose to be gay live and let live wot ever happens between too consensual people isn’t anything to do with any one else

@@sarahallen6471 She has apologized for that. We don't always respond perfectly in the moment, nor do we always respond the way we think we might to certain things. Trust me, I have made many mistakes with my own daughters. We are all human and the best we can do is to apologize for our mistakes and things we shouldn't have said, and hope that the people we love will forgive us.
