THE SECRET MAU MAU CODE MEMBERS USED TO IDENTIFY ONE ANOTHER - FLORENCE WANGECHI

  • As a small girl, Florence Wangeci got curious about Mau Mau activities around her father's homestead where oathing was taking place, led by her uncle. She met Kimathi, Gen China and other fighters. She had to be given the oath by elders to make sure she was brought firmly to the fold. She then became a scout, gathering intelligence for the movement. She tells of the hardships at the time, including forcible marriage of Kikuyu girls by colonial home guards, and interrupted dreams of her own education. She narrates how Waruru Kanja, a security officer, used to steal guns that would then end up with the Mau Mau fighters. Interestingly, she tells of the fighters spirited attempt to continue with family life, sneaking into their homes at night or at other opportune times. Children would then be raised, continuing the lineage of the men who were in the forest. It was a time of great sacrifice for everyone. Although Kenyatta denied by the leader of Mau Mau during his trial in Kapenguria, for the umpteenth time, it emerges that there was a coordinated connection between Mau Mau and Jomo Kenyatta, a fact that has been stated by many veterans interviewed by Mau Mau Chronicles (This linkage is vehemently denied by those who firmly believe Kenyatta had nothing to do with Mau Mau based on perceived postcolonial betrayals of Mau Mau). But fact and witnessing are stubborn; it would appear that while Kenyatta was too old to go into the forest, he was recognized as the leader of the movement and was consulted by the youths who went into the forest, never mind what happened or did not happen after independence.

This is what they need to teach in schools, true history! and an accurate account of events undictated by western influence. If more than half of Kenyans going through the school system had this kind of information, we would have been a very powerful country!

Hats off to this woman, and all These brave men and women who even have the courage to tell their stories. My grandparents lived in the colonial village of Aguthi, and my parents were born there. You can still see the ditches they dug to keep the villagers in, and the fighters out. To this day, they have a hard time retelling the ordeals. In our case, the boomers are actually the greatest generation because they raised us despite their traumatized childhood.

Sharing their stories is yet another gift to Kenya. The first was their lives.

My heart wipes when I listen to those great men and women who know the price of independence. We Kenyans especially the Kikuyu we have let them down. Look at what we have done to those who shed their blood so our children can be free.

Nikwega muno, that is the little Kimeru I can remember but I followed most of her story coz many words are similar to those in Luganda.
Great piece of narrative, the lady had a detailed narration of the mau mau struggle and injustices faced by the white an and home guards.
Against that background leaders should uphold the ideals and spirit of sacrifice exhibited by those heroes as they govern Kenya.
Others in Uganda and other African countries should do the same.
Great work mr reporter for such a masterpiece, how else would we have known the inner story firsthand.
