I think you need to do this one again and put the original yarn in the melted dye! Having that soft lavender color with the more brilliant colors would be stunning!
I think the Worst part of watching your videos is trying to decide which manner of dyeing I want to do first!!🤣🤣 Again, bravo! I thoroughly enjoy each and every ChemKnits you do. Thank you!!
I love watching your videos. If I speead my yarn the way you do I end up with a huge knot that I then have to figure out. This was a very cool technique.
I don't know why I don't end up with mroe tangled messes. Whenever I pick up yarn, I try to pick it up by the ties and then get a hand around to keep it separated. Using the nylon zip ties helps me a lot with this. But I definitely don't set a good example RE the # of ties.
That yarn is beautiful. It would be fun to add one layer of ice, then dye powder, then add more ice on top of the first layer of ice and add a second color and see how the yarn takes it up.
What lovely yarn. I think they would love great together in a project, they really compliment each other. Great video hope you have more of these planned. So much easier than with snow in wintertime and quicker! xxJane
Those are beautiful. I love these just the way they are, but I also think if you'd soaked the first in that water, it would have turned out gorgeous as well. Great video!
I hoped you would dip some of the white area in the run-off instead of mopping up with a new skein. If you dipped and then dropped the first skein in, I think it would would have blended beautifully.
This would work wonderfully! I haven't done this with commercial acid dyes. I don't really want to put those in my food freezer - but I might make some dye ice cubes outside this winter. I have dyed with both popsicles th-cam.com/video/E93v44_YeYU/w-d-xo.html and ice pops. :D
Would it work to place a rack on the litter tray, lay a dry yarn mop on it, then set up the other rack on top of it as you did in this video? The run-through would soak into the mop, but without being submerged.
Get a 2 part kitty litter tray that has one for sifting and one solid, then you don't have to work to mound up your ice, just put the yarn in the bottom of the sifting pan and put the ice over it... the edges will keep it in place... put something underneath to elevate it out of the future melt...
Oh interesting! I used this tray since it was $1 at the dollar store, but it is nice to think that there are other setups that might be easier to manage. :D
This is a good question. I do this just to make sure the colors are set well. Some pigments really do require heat to strike to the yarn, others may strike cold but if it isn't super hot outside I just do this as a step because I'm set up to do it.
Yes! I've used popsicles and ice pops before. th-cam.com/video/E93v44_YeYU/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/j--aVZlz3I0/w-d-xo.html With commercial dyes, I wouldn't want to put them in my freezer but this winter I hope to freeze them outside for some ice dyeing.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials, what if you put a citric acid/dye/water blend into a zip-lock bag and froze it. That way, the commercial dye wouldn't be exposed to the food in the freezer. Then you would lay the bag atop the yarn, and then poke random holes in it with a needle.
@@helenel4126 I think I might just try to do this outside when the weather is cooler to make the ice. I wouldn't want to put acid dyes in my freezer even inside of a bag- but that is my personal comfort level.
owie my ears, the mike next to the ice bucket seemed really loud, but I am extra sound sensitive so maybe just me with earbuds??? colors and effects are great ... did you ever try or consider putting a dry yarnmop under to catch the drips randomly, and maybe halfway thru turn over ... or not turn over???
I cringed when editing that part. Next time I think I'll do a voice over instead. Interesting thought on the double layer of yarn... I'm going to add this to my list!
@@ChemKnitsTutorials I vaguely remember someone doing it while ice tie dyeing shirts so you can even try a shirt under there, that would be fun too and add a different dimension. But then you would probably have to soak it in ash bath and then cook it to set. So much fun and freewheelin' creativity you bring to us!

I'm thinking the same thing.
*cough* *cough* something like this is coming soon.... but I'm not sure when since that is a bit out of my control. Strange teaser I know. ;)
The pastel purple ugh that's got to be my favorite of the two. It's such a soft color and yet still so elegant
Some of these muted pastel yarn mops are so dreamy!
That ice dyed yarn makes me think of a flower, like an orchid or something. They're both so pretty!
Thank you!

Thank you so much! I love getting to play with color and experimenting with different techniques. :D

As the one who winds for my wife, I cringe a little when s see the skein moved around as it's arranged.

OOOO! I love this idea!
I was thinking the same.
Thank you. I am encouraged by your videos.
Than k you so much!!!
I really wanted you to add the ice dyed to the runoff bath 🤣 sitting here internally yelling do it! Do it!
there is one coming up where I did do that. :D
They both turned out absolutely gorgeous! I bet they'd make a beautiful crochet or knit project together.
Thank you!
I love how tonal the yarn mop turned out. It would be interesting to see both skeins worked up into fabric!
I agree!
Great fun Rebecca. Love these yarns. Thanks for sharing. 🥰🧶🐐🐑🐫🦙🧶🥰
Thank you so much for watching!
Love both skeins!
THank you so much!!

The only thing that takes a while is making all of the ice. ;)
I love the second one that was dip dye, in the melt water. Soooo beautiful!😻
Thank you so much!
Oh wow. WOW! This is incredible.
Awesome! I would knit/crochet with either yarn in a minute!!!😁
Thank you so much! I plan on adding these to the shop in the next update. ;)
It would be very interesting to do an ice dye suspended on a rack or basket. Then dip it in the catch basin after. Good video.
Oooooo! I want to do ice dyeing on fabric this summer
Those are beautiful. I love these just the way they are, but I also think if you'd soaked the first in that water, it would have turned out gorgeous as well. Great video!
Soaking up in the water is definitely a favorite of mine. #comingsoonalthoughIdontknowwhen :D
This was sooo interesting. Makes me want to try this and see how it would work. Thank you.
It is a LOT of fun to see how the dyes melt on to the yarn.
oh i *love* that pastel purple. i def like that one better tbh and thats saying a lot considering how amazing the ice dyed one is
Thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous
Thank you!
The color imbalance is frustrating in most projects but can make really fun socks. That’s what I use ice dye yarn for. 😊
I like yarns like this for some kind of scarf or garter stitch shawlette where the asymmetry wouldn't bug me too much. :D
I hoped you would dip some of the white area in the run-off instead of mopping up with a new skein. If you dipped and then dropped the first skein in, I think it would would have blended beautifully.
It absolutely would have blended nicely! I did that on another video with this technique that should be coming out sometime in 2020.
I'm not sure which skein I like more. These are both spectacular colors.
Thank you so much, Carol!
The finished original hank looks marbled to me. Both are so beautiful!
OOO I love it! Thank you!
@@ChemKnitsTutorials you're very welcome!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Here at the beginning I'm just wondering what would happen if you used Ice Cube's that you froze the dye in
Maybe worth a blank in the under carriage?

You could possibly turn the drainer right side up and put something as spacers underneath. Yarn and ice would be inside of drainer. Just a thought.😊
That would have worked well, for sure!
Pretty? More than that...amazzzzzzzing!
Thank you!
My wife was saying it would have been interesting if you had a skein of yarn in the pan under the basket.
I think I should do that next time and just plan for it!
I would dunk it!!
This will come in a future video. ;) #spoilers ;)
Would it work to place a rack on the litter tray, lay a dry yarn mop on it, then set up the other rack on top of it as you did in this video? The run-through would soak into the mop, but without being submerged.
I have plans for more variations on this technique. ;)

This might be a silly question.. but why does it have to be steamed? Does the dye not take without steam?

Could you use dry mini skeins underneath as dye mops? *edit* I should of watched all the video before commenting lol
I said the same thing!
No comment away! :D It is always fun to see what you guys are thinking early on.
I didn’t see this ? What is the colors?
I used some jacquard acid dyes outside layered on the ice. The exact colors I used should be in the video description.
I think I would have flipper the yarn and done the ice dye again on the other side.
That would be super pretty!!
Snow dying inside, just turn the thermostat to 90! :D
Oh man, today it was in the 90's and we were melting a bit!
That looks yummy. It makes me want koolaid.
This is a fun technique to try with KoolAid, too!
