I see the perspective of someone with moderate media literacy; I suppose many people may feel overwhelmed by what truly is the information overload and base their view of the world on
- the tv/radio/newspaper news
- what influencers/friends/contacts show them
The first group 'manufactures consent' (Chomsky, essential reading) to preserve the status quo, and the second group normally consists of a variety of voices with low to moderate education and limited knowledge of science, history, media, etc.
It is not easy to find news sources whom one can trust. Do they have a hidden agenda? Do they keep up the same standards for friends and enemies? Do they stand up just for their group, or for humanity, equality and democracy in general?
As an example, in the 2016 elections, we were told it was an opportunity to make the first woman president of the US. In the 2020 elections, the last woman standing in the democratic primaries received no media attention at all, and the rules were even rewritten internally to make sure that she would not take part in a live tv debate with her 2 male contenders. Therefore, the claim that the democrats have wanted to make the first woman president of the US is misleading. In 2016 there must have been many reasons to choose that woman, but not the fact that she was a woman.
Most people can do some critical thinking, but we let ourselves by hijacked by people who tell us what to think of a certain situation, or who manipulate our feelings. Study. Pay attention. Ask critical questions. It's not impossible. Good luck.
