reminds me of many nights as a young boy in the 80's basking in the ethereal beauty of that entire generation of music, many songs during that decade were mysterious and haunting, yet so comforting at the same time, they nurtured my young soul in a way I can't explain, this song perfectly captures what I felt through the 80's, one of my top 5 favorite Police songs ever

What a perfect encapsulation of the evanescent, yet profound imprints that this music produced in so many of us who were lucky enough to have grown up in that era. Well said. 👍

"It's a quasi-mystical song. You have to do something, go somewhere, to get outside yourself. I read the book "Meetings with Remarkable Men" which says you have to make a journey. It doesn't have to be a real journey, it can be a mental journey."

I'm going to continue to immovably stand on my not-so-humble perspective that these guys were among the very best of classic rock bands. I was in high school when they got huge exposure, and were all over MTV and VH-1.
The music was esoteric, transient, transformative...they would take me out of my room, and to someplace else, much like other progressive/experimental bands like 'Floyd, etc.
They came up and broke lose in a span of years when I think music and art reached a zenith, a golden age, and we're lacking and needful for a Renaissance like this again. Much of which pollutes the airwaves now is utter shit by comparison.
The bitter shame is that they didn't survive their infighting, but then interviews I watched suggested that they split up when they felt they took the band as far as they could. Maybe they could only go so far into the void, and compared to bands that lasted much, much longer, they were meant for a short but glorious dawn and era.

The entire beggining remindes me of a man walking in a crowd, then he stops and feels light headed and passes out, thats were the band begins to ease in and when he is completly out cold and everyone is surrounding him, his mind replays a time when he was most happy...If thats not weird or anything.

Anyone else read "Broken Music"? It's Sting's biography. So, he was a big fan of Hermann Hesse and The Glass Bead Game; after reading both, I'm gonna say this is where Sting found the inspiration for this song. If you love this song, check out Hesse and The Glass Bead Game. The Indian Life is the final reincarnation and last chapter in the book. I promise you'll dig it. Maya!!

    Upon a secret journey
    I met a holy man
    His blindness was his wisdom
    I'm such a lonely man
And as the world was turning
    It rolled itself in pain
This does not seem to touch you
    He pointed to the rain
You will see light in the darkness
You will make some sense of this
And when you've made your secret journey
You will find this love you miss
And on the days that followed
    I listened to his words
    I strained to understand him
I chased his thoughts like birds
You will see light in the darkness
You will make some sense of this
And when you've made your secret journey
You will find this love you miss
You will see light in the darkness
You will make some sense of this
You will see joy in this sadness
You will find this love you've missed
And when you made your secret journey
You will be a holy man .......

Sting wrote the lyrics and made the song's progression. At first, Sting thought the song was complete with only bass & drums, but he gave into Andy and told him to "make it his own." So in one try and take, Andy played the now famous melody thru the progression.

By the time of Ghost they were already one of the biggest bands in the world, so it's hard to say they weren't "commercial" before. I still find a lot to like in Ghost. Sting wanted a more pop sound, Andy and Stewart wanted to keep the energy of the reggae/ska influence. Sting won, mostly. Ghost still has all the reggae time sigs and syncopation, but it is hidden by synthesizers & studio tricks.

Joe Halawani In 1983, Synchronicity was voted album of the year. This same album was inducted into the Grammy hall of fame in 2009. Now while these are awards and may not resonate to the individual, Synchronicity was the last effort from the Police and was a U-turn from the very much "pop" influenced Ghost!
Every Breath, King of pain, Wrapped around your finger, Walking in your footsteps and Tea in the Sahara are timeless offerings and I've just listed half an Album. While i respect your affiliation to Ghost, i think another listen to synchronicity might sway your judgement.

When I realized why the Teacher pointed to the rain I fuckin freaked out for a few months. I couldn't believe I bought that obvious lie. Sting is still a total creep because of the whole 9-11 thing. But hey, maybe he knows about the giant Cuisinart in the sky spinning around Polaris that separates the wheat from the chaff. I dunno. Can't call it or make claims in this weird Realm. Good times ahead!

This song would fit perfectly on the movie Dune or a reading of Frank Miller's Ronin.

It's a tricky song to play live, but some versions are up on youtube, including this one: th-cam.com/video/ypBOn6jsoQk/w-d-xo.html Cheers, Guy

A sexy number. Even sexier after 3:00, and my only criticism is that it fades out into that ending synth too soon. They were just picking up momentum and could've rode the grove and repeated that phase another 8 times maybe! haha.. Hot stuff.

everyone knows that sting was better with the police. there are a few good sting songs, but a lot of great police songs, and some of them were by andy summers. try omegaman.
