I really think Lyle was acting out of a desire to help his little brother. You could see it in his eyes, the way he was always watching Eric's emotions, it's shown very well in the show. In the documentary videos from the courtroom, Lyle is also constantly looking at Eric. It's such a strong love of an older brother for a younger one
