I’ve done the Far and Wide by Knitting Expat out of my early handspun, and I’ve seen her Palette Cleanser done out of handspun by a friend - stunning. I’d recommend a yarn measurer if you’re planning following a particular pattern.
Oh so many beautiful items to delight our eyes 😍 Your latest bobbin is amazing, you are definitely a quick learner! I am a big believer in pre drafting all my fibre before I spin it. I try and make my spinning experience the most enjoyable for me and this little bit of prep beforehand that day helps me. I just do what I will be spinning for the day, you don’t have to do the whole amount at one time. I have spun bags like yours and there are so many different ways, lol I am sure each spinner would tell you something different 😊 I find there is a fair bit of white inside the Fibre of the hedgehogs (from the two batches I have seen, but yours might be different), keep in mind that this white will dilute the colour you are seeing right now…..you may not need to pair it with a neutral. You will see when you spin how it is. I personally would strip down those different segments of fibre into strips, do the whole bag. throw them all bag in all mixed up and just grab and go, fill all your bobbins, then make two ply yarn….it will be similar to spin cycle😮 Have fun!! 💓
You had me at similar to Spincycle 😍 I’m still trying to figure out the perfect balance between overtwisted and under twisted…it is taking some trial and error!
I've made many Stephen West shawls and love them all - and I'm sure I'll make many more. I've done two of his MKAL's (Twists & Turns, Shawlography) and like them both. I bought a kit for Geogradient, but was not able to start at the beginning, because - life. Then there was the issue with clue 1. So, I decided to wait until I could see the finished shawl. I was kind of meh about it. So, I didn't make it. I did his Mystery Yarn A-Long one year because of the dyers that were involved and didn't really care for any of the colorways that were included. I have pretty much decided I am done with M-anything.
Hi Christine! I know…its almost like we have to make our minds up ahead of time and hope we can withstand the excitement leading up to the mysteries. Because once they start, I’m usually happy I didn’t join in! We’ll have to keep each other strong!
All your knits are beautiful but you are at your best when you embrace your inner Stephen West. Your color sense is inspirational. As for his MKAL, every time I get sucked in it’s a project I don’t love. So I have learned to wait and see. You might check out Casapinka’s shawls and knitalongs. Easy to keep up and often have very innovative stitch patterns. As for the Briornate pattern… I prefer the shawl to the sweater and am knitting it in 20 different mini skeins. So much fun!
I agree! I try to be more “sophisticated” in my color choices, but I am. Happiest with an explosion of color. 20 mini skeins!! There is nothing that could be more exciting than that.
A while back, I had a very similar problem with unacceptable elongated stitch after horizontal braid on some other pattern (Woodfords, I think, but not sure). Playing with needles and tensions, I realised that the braid is actually just the usual bind-off of stitches while simultaneously making cast-on loop for each stitch that is cast-off. However, if the braid was loose enough for the fabric, the new stitches were too long, and if I made stitches tight and small, the braid was too tight. So I decided not to do it simultaneously. This is what I did and worked well for me: 1) I did bind-off with a considerably larger needle (I probably did some braidy bind off, maybe i-cord bind off, or a Jeni's very stretchy BO or someting like that). 2) I picked up stitches from the bind-off braid, being careful not to distort the braid when picking up stitches and to show-off the braid nicely on the right side. Not sure how your pattern makes the horizontal braid, for example Quiet Stars by Joji Locatelli makes a different horizontal braid than in Woodfords, and there I did not have the problem with elongated stitches.
Wow! You are quite an industrious knitter. I am so impressed that you figured that out and created yourself a solution! You should be a designer. I’m going to leave it and hope its not too visible in the finished garment, but this is so helpful for the future!
The night shift shawl is easy going. The stitches repeat and you might find that part boring, but what kept my interest was how the colors played together.
Happy Mother’s Day! I’m sorry Kush won’t be around for the day, I hope the evening was special. The older Annalie gets the less special the day becomes…kids sports and practices games and all…the beat goes on. When she did ballet they always had rehearsals on Mother’s Day and this year she had swim practice. Oh well! I didn’t cook at all and I got extra hugs and cards and that was enough. Your Stephen west glow is contagious! Your shawl is beautiful and it’s so fun to see your joy bubble over for it!❤ I love your t shirt with the rainbow heart. Thanks for keeping me company while I kitchenered two toes in some socks and wove in ends

Ohhh and forgot to mention… I was one of the psycho (in all the best ways haha) people who was sitting at the computer and hitting refresh when that fiber fest pru shawl kit was released. 😂 I have not made it yet, but I am so excited to make it with that yarn. It was so popular that they made more kits. You are so good about sticking to your beliefs about shipping, you can def find amazing colors locally to make this. I think that was his intention with this pattern… That we all have collected those random, one off skeins the longer we’ve knit and putting them together in this pattern, just works.
Omg I’m so jealous!!! PRU is such a spectacular dyer. I know you and I share a love of those neons. I’m going to keep my eye open for beautiful skeins for this shawl. And then I think we need to do a Fiber Fest KAL.
I love your finished shawls! The Helen Stewart is one I wanted to do, bought the pattern, but too busy with other projects to fit it in. But I love your yarn colors and how they look together. Stephen West I also adore. Bubbles and Brioche is beautiful. The Fiber Fest pattern I bought, but haven’t started yet. It looks like so much fun. I just re-learned brioche, though I’ve done it in a few other projects. Not for a couple of years though. I am revisiting a project I started and frogged in 2017 called Brioche Booster by Laura Nelkin. Brioche is so much fun and pretty when it’s coming to life.
Hi Debra! I feel like we all need to make Fiber Fest as a group. So many people have the pattern but haven’t started it! I think that would be pretty fun. Brioche is just magical, and the fabric created is ✨
LOVE the FiberFest shawl as well!! It's on my queue, but I am trying to finish my Geogradient MKAL first before I cast on another shawl 😂. I actually really enjoyed the process of picking yarn & the excitement of the MKAL, and absolutely love the pattern, but obviously could not keep up. I am a mom of 3, full time NP, and then I let other projects get in the way. I have recently picked it back up and am back at it. My reward for completing will be casting on the Fiber Fest!! I will likely get sucked in again come MKAL time ❤

While I enjoyed doing things in knitting I’d never done before within the relative “safety” of a shawl, I couldn’t keep up and found that profoundly frustrating. Also, I’ve learned I don’t like the mystery and surprise much. I gave up 2-3 weeks in on each. While eventually I’ll finish those shawls, they are in indefinite hibernation. I prefer to knit items that I can see finished first and the at I know I love the look. That is all😊

Welcome to the wonderful rabbit hole of spinning! I have only been spinning since January of 2024 but have done a lot of experimenting. I had two thoughts about the hedgehog fibers: my instinct would be to spin end to end the more tonal tails onto a single bobbin and the more variegated tails end to end on a second bobbin and ply them together into a two ply. If you want more yardage or there is a great disparity of tonals versus variegated tails, then I would arrange the tails into a gradient and spin them end to end and spin a second bobbin of undyed wool to ply with it or a really hot pink. FatCat Knits on Etsy is one of my favorite indie fiber dyers right now and they have some spectacular shades on tonal pink. Just some thoughts…
