A shame that Enterprise never got to join her sisters in space. She was designed to be retrofitted for spaceflight but enough design changes happened between Enterprise and Columbia that it would have been too expensive to modify her.

Pilot : Houston, we have a problem, our landing gear is not going down.
Nasa: Roger, take a stick behind your seat please.

The wheel doors, covered with anti-thermal material, were critical, because they covered rectangular holes in the heat shield used to protect against the heat of re-entry into the atmosphere.

Those gears literally had only one job, deploying at landing, the retraction was not so critical, since it was done only in the assembly facility, with the ship jacked up like in the video ;-D

Surprised it could do that. I always figured they just blew it down, and retracted it manually before the next flight. Seems like this would be unnecessary weight.

What metal do they use for the landing gear?

The Space Shuttle landing gear was constructed with aircraft grade (forged) aluminum.

@@AndrewSmoot Well, that's probably the cylinders and main fittings. I'm pretty certain that those would have a steel liner and steel pistons to absorb the shock of landing. Gotta love the high-tech "pokey" stick. NASA engineering at it's finest.
