I am 80 yo, been going to UK games since the Rupp Era. Mark will do all of what you suggest, will be successful immediately, should be at Kentucky for a long time, will run a respectable program. Will recruit players that will be there for more than 1 year. He understands what is required to be the Head Coach at UK. I think he will win a Nat'l Championship in the first 5 years. With the offense he uses, players will want to play at UK for him. He will get all the support he needs to succeed at the University of Kentucky.
Same...he did a good job at BYU, and now he's got the resources of KY, smart, hard working, good personality, and knows the KY system of doing things. Gonna be a good year
Last night I rewatched BYU winning at Kansas. Cal's Kentucky last year couldn't beat Kansas on a neutral court. And Pope's offense is fun! His players are scrappy! They shoot more threes than twos.
@@wayweary256Kentucky is its own brand, we’ve historically had elite players much before cal(Rondo, Chapman, etc.) Cal is a great recruiter and there’s not much better than he is, but the idea that we won’t have talent is just nonsense. We have one of the biggest NIL collectives and donor systems in college athletics. Plus, if your coach can’t win with that amount of talent, it doesn’t even matter. Transfer portal is the most important recruiting process in today’s game, not elite one and dones anymore.
All Kentucky has ever needed is X and O's. Recruiting is something that almost takes care of itself. Has Duke dropped off in recruiting without Coach K. Nope

Man, I was pissed off when this was announced, but I've come around. I think he's going to do great, and his passion for the program will go a long way to rejuvenating the UK fanbase.
I am from Lexington and have lived here my whole life so i am a diehard bleed blue UK fan! I love Mark Pope. He played for possibly the greatest Kentucky team ever and has a ship. He's family and always will be. And boy am i pulling for him to excel here so much! I want him to be great! We all do!! I think he's a fantastic coach and will work hard recruiting and scouring the transfer portal (something Cal didnt do) to put together teams that fit his style. My gut feeling, however, is that its not going to work and we'll be coach shopping again in a few years. And its very painfully obvious after all this that we no longer carry that marquee image and elite coaches who have jobs dont want to coach here. Its not worth it. The term "Blue Blood" doesnt mean a thing anymore. I am also terrified of Pope's offensive style. Its to reliant on shooting 3's. Teams that rely on perimeter shooting rarely win titles. There are, simply, going to be alot of games where shot's arent falling and we will lose. Especially deep tournament games. I love that he will make very good use of the portal and with Kentucky's deep pockets he will get to hire some really good experienced players. Hell, i dont know. Lol. I'm behind him 100%, dont get me wrong, but i am terrified. I honestly am just hoping for a good season this year and maybe a tournament win. Rumor has it Mark Pope has been in talks with his Jeff & Reed Sheppard. Man if he would come back for one more year that would be amazing! From what I’m seeing, more & more of our fans are starting to embrace Mark Pope.
Unfortunately unless during the Draft process Reed Sheppard drops, I don't see him turning down being a top 10 Draft pick in the NBA. It's an incredibly weak Draft and if he comes back he will probably fall in next season's Draft. Would be great for Kentucky and bad for him. Selfishly I want him to return and work on his defense so that he's even better at it outside of his anticipation to steal passes. Fundamentally the rest of his defense needs work, which could improve with another year of college basketball. However, top 10 NBA money is hard to turn down. It's much higher than if he was going to be a 2nd round pick. If he was a 2nd round prospect, coming back is a no-brainer because there's no guaranteed money or even a guarantee of a contract on a team. It'll take a miracle to get him back despite how much he loves Kentucky. I'd miss that young man for sure.

They want their guards to be 6’3 or bigger. If he goes now he will be sitting the bench for awhile. It’s not like he won’t make good money if he comes back and develops his body and game. He will also be a starter this next year and not the 7th man. He will also have a shot at national player of the year next year and be a massive focus in college basketball next year. How a hall of fame coach refused to start a player like him shows the inept coaching style of that coach. Any other coach in the country would have made him the focus of his offense.

It is dumb if that's how they're going to evaluate them. They should also evaluate his game tape and intelligence on top of what he could do in a scrimmage if they do that at the combine. I mean he isn't the shortest guard ever that would make the NBA. He is small compared to modern guards though. If their evaluations are that minimal though, it's just stupid. I guess the lack of shooting ability is what has Oscar in the G-League though. That's stupid considering he is a fierce rebounder for his smaller length. His motor as a player should have been enough for him to at least have been a rotation piece in the NBA.

Pope, just entering a room, occupies a presence hardly any other coach in America can present. With OK and TX entering the mix, the SEC again will be a banged up conference by March. I believe Pope will have a huge backing and will receive any support he needs. Cal couldn't get rid of the noise of his ego in his head. The man had everything. Everything, didn't work. 5 star freshmen didn't work the last several years. Too much of a level playing field. Pope will bring consistency to the program. I wish I could feel 5.5 mil a year plus for a few seconds. GO BIG BLUE!

It's gonna be soooo boring to watch though. Pope coaching BYU had every 2nd shot be a 3 point shot (BYU via KenPom was 50.4 for 3PA/FGA and 4th in the nation). Also I'm not sure how that's going to translate into success in March. It just takes 1 bad night shooting to go out in March and BYU proved that this March by losing to Duquesne (who is Duquesne anyway). I wish Barnhart had the guts to get Chris Beard instead - his lock down defense which translates into steals and fast break transition offense would have been awesome to watch.

If you're commenting about Calipari's lack of success I agree they lost in the early rounds too. I was saying Chris Beard was the better pick. He has Ole Miss ranked preseason already. It took Beard just 2 short years to get Texas Tech into a national championship game and then moved to Texas and they won the Big 12 in just 2 years of him coaching. I'm pretty sure we'll see better success from Chris Beard even with the lower NIL money they have.

Well Kentucky fans I've had time to reflect since Calipari left and the news I have today will break your heart ....we've had a little conversation about the month of February where Calipari notified Kentucky about Ohio State and Arkansas job and was denied by Mitch Barnhart and Calipari walks off mad...doesn't say anything now ...what happens next?? we go to Nashville he dumps the tournament!! then what happens?? then we go to the NCAA tournament and he deliberately dumped that one ...I never seen a coach with three timeouts left with one minute so that tells you he didn't do any coaching in that game but I digress... it's plain to see that he threw both games but now this is how sneaky Cal is he came back to Kentucky and didnt say a word act like he was staying and waits til when? to announce he's leaving ...well right there in the middle of the championship game is when !! stole all their thunder you know why?? so that he can make the fan base everywhere else mad and talk bad about Kentucky and it worked he did that deliberately so that we couldn't get a coach so nobody would want the job... I think he's a fantastic coach and will work hard recruiting and scouring the transfer portal (something Cal didnt do) to put together teams that fit his style. My gut feeling, however, is that its not going to work and we'll be coach shopping again in a few years. And its very painfully obvious after all this that we no longer carry that marquee image and elite coaches who have jobs dont want to coach here. Its not worth it. The term "Blue Blood" doesnt mean a thing anymore. I am also terrified of Pope's offensive style. Its to reliant on shooting 3's. Teams that rely on perimeter shooting rarely win titles. There are, simply, going to be alot of games where shot's arent falling and we will lose. Especially deep tournament games. I love that he will make very good use of the portal and with Kentucky's deep pockets he will get to hire some really good experienced players. Hell, i dont know. Lol. I'm behind him 100%, dont get me wrong, but i am terrified. I honestly am just hoping for a good season this year and maybe a tournament win. Next year is when i'll really be expecting him to show us exactly what he's capable of.

Unfortunately unless during the Draft process Reed Sheppard drops, I don't see him turning down being a top 10 Draft pick in the NBA. It's an incredibly weak Draft and if he comes back he will probably fall in next season's Draft. Would be great for Kentucky and bad for him. Selfishly I want him to return and work on his defense so that he's even better at it outside of his anticipation to steal passes. Fundamentally the rest of his defense needs work, which could improve with another year of college basketball. However, top 10 NBA money is hard to turn down. It's much higher than if he was going to be a 2nd round pick. If he was a 2nd round prospect, coming back is a no-brainer because there's no guaranteed money or even a guarantee of a contract on a team. It'll take a miracle to get him back despite how much he loves Kentucky. I'd miss that young man for sure.

@@michaelbell5the draft process will hurt him. His measurements are not good. I hate to say that and I think it’s stupid how the nba evaluates talent nowadays but that’s how it is. They want their guards to be 6’3 or bigger. If he goes now he will be sitting the bench for awhile. It’s not like he won’t make good money if he comes back and develops his body and game. He will also be a starter this next year and not the 7th man. He will also have a shot at national player of the year next year and be a massive focus in college basketball next year. How a hall of fame coach refused to start a player like him shows the inept coaching style of that coach. Any other coach in the country would have made him the focus of his offense.

It is dumb if that's how they're going to evaluate them. They should also evaluate his game tape and intelligence on top of what he could do in a scrimmage if they do that at the combine. I mean he isn't the shortest guard ever that would make the NBA. He is small compared to modern guards though. If their evaluations are that minimal though, it's just stupid. I guess the lack of shooting ability is what has Oscar in the G-League though. That's stupid considering he is a fierce rebounder for his smaller length. His motor as a player should have been enough for him to at least have been a rotation piece in the NBA.
We don't even know today what players are on the 2024 uk roster. So how can you state that Pope will be a winner. Last time I looked Pope's eligibility has run out.

Pope, just entering a room, occupies a presence hardly any other coach in America can present. With OK and TX entering the mix, the SEC again will be a banged up conference by March. I believe Pope will have a huge backing and will receive any support he needs. Cal couldn't get rid of the noise of his ego in his head. The man had everything. Everything, didn't work. 5 star freshmen didn't work the last several years. Too much of a level playing field. Pope will bring consistency to the program. It's gonna be soooo boring to watch though. Pope coaching BYU had every 2nd shot be a 3 point shot (BYU via KenPom was 50.4 for 3PA/FGA and 4th in the nation). Also I'm not sure how that's going to translate into success in March. It just takes 1 bad night shooting to go out in March and BYU proved that this March by losing to Duquesne (who is Duquesne anyway). I wish Barnhart had the guts to get Chris Beard instead - his lock down defense which translates into steals and fast break transition offense would have been awesome to watch.

If you're commenting about Calipari's lack of success I agree they lost in the early rounds too. I was saying Chris Beard was the better pick. He has Ole Miss ranked preseason already. It took Beard just 2 short years to get Texas Tech into a national championship game and then moved to Texas and they won the Big 12 in just 2 years of him coaching. I'm pretty sure we'll see better success from Chris Beard even with the lower NIL money they have.

Well Kentucky fans I've had time to reflect since Calipari left and the news I have today will break your heart ....we've had a little conversation about the month of February where Calipari notified Kentucky about Ohio State and Arkansas job and was denied by Mitch Barnhart and Calipari walks off mad...doesn't say anything now ...what happens next?? we go to Nashville he dumps the tournament!! then what happens?? then we go to the NCAA tournament and he deliberately dumped that one ...I never seen a coach with three timeouts left with one minute so that tells you he didn't do any coaching in that game but I digress... it's plain to see that he threw both games but now this is how sneaky Cal is he came back to Kentucky and didnt say a word act like he was staying and waits til when? to announce he's leaving ...well right there in the middle of the championship game is when !! stole all their thunder you know why?? so that he can make the fan base everywhere else mad and talk bad about Kentucky and it worked he did that deliberately so that we couldn't get a coach so nobody would want the job... Because he doesn't want to be beaten next year at Arkansas and he has to look good so he turned the entire college basketball world against the Kentucky fans making it to where a good coach probably didn't want to come here so that when we play Arkansas and he wins he looks good that's why he couldn't have a good coach come here so they thought !!now remember he said he's about the players well what about the Kentucky players that he sacrificed because of his self-centeredness the way that he did Kentucky right here and tried to make the fan base look like we're cruel and mean and unappreciative is just unacceptable to me because #BigBlueNation turned out like no other for Mr Mark Pope and I'm here to tell you he's going to shake the college basketball world they don't have any idea what's coming!! they don't even know the beast they have awakened!!! so you keep that in mind Kentucky fans we have championships heading to Kentucky and bad Karma heading to Arkansas for what John Calipari did to the University of Kentucky but more importantly what he did to #BigBlueNation .

I think Scott Drew flew to Lexington to help push the hire of Mark Pope , you know Pitino was making phone calls to all the right people .
