Same here. It was in the late 90s when I think he might have been touring for Venus Isle. The only problem was that he had 2 opening acts. It was some violinist as another band as well. That was too much. Give me 1 opener if any. Eric was good, though, and I was up front real close.
I was so blessed to see him in the little clubs, where all the guitar players would be in the audience, like me, looking at each other, smiling and shaking our heads. By far rhe most influencial artist for me. Ill bever forget those nights .
I’ve known Eric since the late 70s. He is the same person I always knew- Great Unbelievable Player- ditto his wonderful personality. Howdy Rick and Eric from Louisiana 🎉
Yeah that was nice to hear you two just talking about those ‘aha’ moments. I’ve followed Eric over the years and been able to attend several of his performances. From small venues to large. Indoors and out. Some of the smaller venues I was able to stand so close to him while he was playing I could have almost reached out and touched him. That is right before security would have pinned me down. Ha. Wow Rick, you have interviewed a lot of guitarists. Any chance you could some how manage to get Hendrix and/or SRV? Nah. Oh well…. Sigh!
George Lynch has a similar sound with the way he recorded his guitar parts back in the '80's. He trimmed off a lot of treble high end and brought up the mid's to make his sound more appealing.
I remember hearing Eric Johnson on a Hot Licks Total Electric Guitar video and it was just on another level the tone and chord voicings I was hooked on his style ever since
Some of the most beautiful things-chordally, and tone-wise-that he’s ever played, are on that video @johncoster1975! I watched it so many times that I can replay some of it in my mind-especially the intro improvisation. Just heavenly sounding tones… 🤯
I was in Rockin a Robin Guitars in Houston when they were on University Blvd, (this was before they moved to S. shepherd Dr.) one day in the late 70s, Bart showed me a heavily played 68 gold top LP that had black coil humbuckers, the top was covered with weather checking and the fingerboard looked like it had been heavily oiled. Bart said it had belonged to Eric Johnson. I passed on it and bought a near mint 68 a gold top, I’m kickin myself ever since. Eric said in an interview later that he wished he still had the LP. Sometime later I saw Eric Johnson when he opened for Stevie Ray Vaughan at the Music Hall in Houston, this was on SRVs tour he did right after Texas Flood came out. Eric Johnson was unbelievable and I felt bad for SRV, although SRV was just awesome too, but he was in a league all his own and totally different from Eric, but Eric showed his stuff to the max. 🇺🇸🎸👮🏻♂️

I don't know if I can really respect his opinions anymore, seeing as he's fallen to only 205 on Rolling Stones Greatest Guitarist List wheras Joan Jett is I think 76th - so she must be a lot better... maybe you should interview her, Rick. , , This is sarcasm, folks - Eric is a huge hero to me and has been for decades.
I always thought his tone got mislabeled as a "violin” tone. To me it’s a more rounded cello sound. Violins can get trebly and screechy at times. His sound is always rounded and mello…like a cello lol
Didn't Eric use a single amp set-up with the Electromagnets? A Mesa Boogie?? You need to come back to the UK, Eric. The quality of the 240V, 60 Hz supply is second to none.

Sound engineers that do not play an instrument that requires an amplifier need to listen and absorb this.
I saw Eric Johnson years back at the Galaxy Dinner Theater in Santa Ana California. What an experience, what a great memory.

I love that he is still searching and pursuing new avenues. Very inspiring. 😎🤓

Met Eric years ago in Austin,TX at his studio. One of the nicest, most down-to-earth guys ever.
Eric's one of the living legends of guitar 🎸.
Hey Dude can you tell me if this message is getting through i have had issues commenting on Ricks channels 🥴 Cheers!
@@randomelvis3359I see it
I´m a big fan of Eric....bought his album Tones in the 80`s ....and I was stunned
I just know how it feels to listen to Eric Johnson: FANTASTIC!
THANK YOU! VERY GOOD INTERVIEW I SAW ERIC 3 WEEKS AGO HE IS ONE OF THE BEST TOP SHELF PLAYERS! I ALSO LIKE HIS VOICE VERY MUCH.

I’ll tune in to anything Eric
I'm so excited to go to the G3 REUNION Show. I got my VIP Tix on day 1 for Salem, Oregon
These two guys are so humble that I can listen to them forever...

This conversation is the epitome of understanding guitar tone . Feeling is paramount . Variables in electricity are not negligible.

it's great to be able to take the music somewhere . sometimes it's not always possible yet. we must always try [ quote BB King ]
Eric’s desire, one amp to rule them all!
I wish he elaborated on the bathroom/AC thing. From what I remember (in interviews that I have read), that actually happened.
😆🤘right!
I live in Austin and have friends who know Eric from guitar players to auto mechanics they all say he’s really cool

This makes me even more excited for G3!
AMAZING INTERVIEW ! AMAZING CHANEL!
Subscribed. What was I thinking waiting for so long???
Way cool Rick!
EJ is the man!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Okay, Rick, I apologize for not subscribing to this ‘2’ channel earlier. But I draw the line at ‘Beato 9!’ (“Number Nine….”)
music as "psychic nutrition"..... hell yeah.... already knew he was brilliant....
What a treble maker!

He likes Fender but I like cliffs of dover on the Gibson SG the best.
Eric should try Suhr guitars! Way better than Fender and true quiet pickups .
I put my 4 x 12 in another room and hated the lack of feedback and feel playing back through the Studio Monitors...
I don't know if I can really respect his opinions anymore, seeing as he's fallen to only 205 on Rolling Stones Greatest Guitarist List wheras Joan Jett is I think 76th - so she must be a lot better... maybe you should interview her, Rick.

This is sarcasm, folks - Eric is a huge hero to me and has been for decades.
Along with Mama Mabel Carter in the top 10? Wow… who knew she was a guitarist 🤔
That Fresh Cream album is the root of E.J’s Blues playing ..
I like playing the Bass so I try to be good and not to get into Treble😉
I can solve Eric’s guitar tone chasing riddles if I have the chance… I can solve yours too Rick…Charlie Plate, Santa Cruz Sound
Strat format single coils with no hum? Easy, Bill Armstrong SCNs. If you can find them.
W0W!
Is there a better guitar track than Cliffs? It’s like it came to us from another civilization
I wonder if Eric has ever tried Lace Sensor pickups.
Eric Johnson - if Mr. Rogers was a guitar god

Ian Moore tribute?
More unique? In my book Eric is one of the most unique players since...forever.
But it's natural to keep on develop who ever you are.
I'd be interested to know what pickups he has tried. Eg. Seymour Duncan's or Kinman.
Didn't Eric use a single amp set-up with the Electromagnets? A Mesa Boogie?? You need to come back to the UK, Eric. The quality of the 240V, 60 Hz supply is second to none.
😊
Need to buy myself a guitar. I'm a drummer. Any suggestions?
Just go to the guitar store getting place and pick one out you like. :)
@@Tr33People Is blue ok?
@@geddylee501 as good as any. but seriously best to go try some and see what speaks to you.
@@geddylee501Red is faster
Need to make sure those Brown M&Ms are removed!
Mesa Boogie send Eric an amp over. He needs more gain and retain the ''tone''
I know what I say and I know what happens when I say things…
My takeaway is that Eric thinks 4x3= 30. 😅
The only way you’re going to get “ better guests” is if you dig up Arturo Toscanini.
No. Thank YOU
And y’all reckon Nuno sounds stoned….
