  • Culture shocks are real. I have decided to share my experiences of life in Germany as a Brit, as well as the beautiful places I am lucky enough to visit.
My meditative videos show a calming and artistic view of the places I visit and the quiet, peaceful wanders I take through them. Medieval villages, picturesque cottages, beautiful cities. Relax and escape with me from the busy bustling world to my dreamy and serene slow living way of seeing my surroundings. Experience the magic of peering into the past and being in a fairytale, just for a little while.

Lived in the area for a few years. Good times to look back on. I had a partial view of Holy Island from my main upstairs window.
Lindisfarne used to be always free parking, where you wanted to park - as long as it wasn't on double yellow lines, etc.
Bamburgh has a very good award winning butchers....and nearby Belford has one of the best fish & chip shops in the country.
A couple of overlooked spots for anyone into churches are Berwick & Ladykirk - the former has a very rare church there built by Cromwell, the latter has a church built by King James.
Watched a lot of the filming of one of the episodes of Outlander as they shot a lot of it on some land where I used to visit. Nearest I got to that era though was as an extra in Outlaw King for the scenes shot in Berwick harbour.
North Northumberland is a really nice area & well worth visiting

@@LaureninGermany He. 🙂 Most historians agree the Viking Age was from around 800 until 1050 AD. Did Norse culture and history exist prior to and after those dates? Yes, of course. There are some historians that say 700 AD is a better start date. The Viking Age is when large-scale raiding, colonising, conquest, and trading over a large territory throughout Europe and across the north Atlantic as far as America took place. Most agree that the June 8th, 793 attack on Lindisfarne is the first good example of this and then rapid expansion took place after. This may very well be an anglocentric perspective. I have only read accounts in English, watched documentaries in English and my education is in English. With that being said, the attack on Lindisfarne is considered by many (not all) the start of the Viking Age. 🙂

so I have been to Jersey recently connecting in LHR.
it was the first time I travelled into/through the UK since Brexit was finalized. maybe it's the decades of the conservative's lack of investments in infrastructure, maybe brexit, maybe a bit of everything. But the passport control was a shite show, interrogated for using a German Emergency Passport (vorläufiger Reisepass) by a border official who didn't know his stuff and was reluctant to hear that he was incorrect, even showing the official german foreign ministry website.
then the question: "how long are you in the UK for"
"do you count Jersey as part of the UK?"
he went quiet and just let me pass.
    what the hell?
they were sending connecting passengers into a security queue that was doing exercises/trials - 95% of hand luggage flagged for extra inspection. it took 50 minutes to get our hand luggage. luckily we had plenty of time, but plenty other passengers missed their flights. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
they lost our checked luggage though.

Hi Lauren - the algorithm recommended me your video so am making your acquaintance for the first time. Lovely video! Delightful how you are so moved by visiting places which featured in your favourite series! What really impressed me however was something else: your WONDERFUL diction! As a native English speaker who has lived most of his life abroad, speaking English for non-mothertongue English speakers, mine has evolved to be precise and relatively accentless too. So I was immediately fascinated and delighted to hear you speak! A delight for my ears! And of course, seeing these magical places is equally delightful. My ears did detect a slight trace of something else in your voice - but only the slightest of traces - so was relieved to hear you are originally Welsh which would explain the slightest of changes in the rhythm I was expecting. I hope I didn't offend you with the above. I will be checking your music channel as I am a big fan of Celtic music from all Celtic regions. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

@@RobWhittlestone hi Rob, well I say thanks to the algorithm. I am also fascinated by accents and diction. I love the existence of Hochdeutsch, for example- an accent-free way for German speakers everywhere to communicate, if they want to. I had to learn RP, but I‘m the exception, sadly. Something like that can only help communication and understanding… ah, I can rattle on so much about this.

@@LaureninGermany Hi Lauren - thank you for your beautiful reply! I, too, am fascinated by accents and languages (currently learning my 5th - Greek). Also the history and evolution of languages is absolutely fascinating for me. Quick example: in English, farm animals (and other indigenous ones) have Germanic names, but their meat usually has a French name - Cow / Kuh but Beef / Boeuf or Sheep/Schaf (Dutch schaap) but Mutton/Mouton, Swine (pig)/Schwein but Pork/Porc and so-on. Living here in Switzerland (which also has some celtic influences by the way) I use Swiss German as best I can - which is closer to English or Dutch than High German, interestingly. Snotty nose - Schnuddernase for example. Not Rotz- Also Ross (Horse) not Pferd (compare with Dutch Pard). I apologise for the random capitalization - it was to provide emphasis, not grammatical correctness. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

    • @LaureninGermany

It´s so funny - I also use capitals to be clearer since being in Germany. I just studied Latin and language changes the Grimms described. (p - f for fish/Fisch etc). The more you look into it, the closer we are all related, don´t you think.
I wonder if the names of animal vs the names for meat was because the ruling class spoke French in Britain?

Hello - Your video is great, but the title is misunderstanding. I hope to hear realy something about tourism since brexit. So I for me have decided not to visit Britain any more, because EU citizens need now a passport. In Germany where I am living You have a strong burocratic way to get a passport and it needs in my hometown about 6 months. So this circumstances let me visit countries where I need only my identy card. I think they handle European tourist like strangers from oversea. In other countries outside the EU, for example Norway or Suisse, You don't need a passport

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany  หลายเดือนก่อน

I´m genuinely sorry if my title misled you, Holger! I actually wanted to show that the British were very welcoming to tourists, rather than the border control things. I really thought about it, as I do not want anyone to feel tricked into clicking.
I actually entered on a German passport and it wasn´t anything unusual for me. I always had to show my passport in the past (British) and this time I used my German one as I was worried about the Schengen rules being a problem when I left the UK. I had got myself a German passport as I am used to needing an actually passport to travel, we don´t have ID cards in Britain. Maybe this is why I didn´t think about this in connection with the title.

Great video, Lauren. As usual i had to watch it twice. There are so much untold about Lindisfarne still. Hundred of Vikings against a small flock of God serving monks, is not really fair play. But it happened and changed the course of Europes history forever. Despite historical evidence points out all three Scandinavian countries as viking nations, i suspect the Norwegians started it. "Vik" in Norwegian, means "bay". And "ing" is just a way to end a word. (Ex: He is a Tromsø vær-ing) A person from Tromsø. Besides; opposite of a land of milk and honey, like Denmark or Sweden, for that matter, Norway one thousand years ago must have been very difficult to survive in. Remember we used to have the "ættestup" in Norway. ((When mama and papa got to old to contribute to the tribe we used to lead them to the top of a mountain.. and push them gently into the other world) Truly we act a little bit different today but most of us today follow the laws of nature. For better and for worse. Norwegian logic is really slightly different from ordinary human logic. Again; great video. Looking forward to the next one 👍

I am so glad I was in Norway before I went. It was so soft on that island compared to Norway, the climate, everything felt so much less hostile to human life. I bet the vikings thought they had found paradise. I can understand Norwegians having a very strong snese of logic, How else to survive in that beautiful, but immensely challenging country?! The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles show an encounter involving three danish/viking ships at the coast of Wessex in the year 787 and a laird named Beaduheard as prominent casualty. At this time Franks, Danes, Saxons, Thuringians, Frisians etc. were all shitty neighbors and did things like this all the time to each other (e.g. my hometown Halberstadt was founded by Franks around year 800 on conquered saxon land as a diocese most likely on top of the ruins of an older pagan sanctuary), so i guess some minor skirmishes and a few burnt villages at the coast weren't worth the noise. Lindisfarne on the other hand was a really important religious and economical center. The rest is history.
