he is. Him and Todd Sucherman amazed, the level they're on. Todd should def be in a more prog band, no offense to the legendary Styx, but Todds playing is so far beyond what's needed for their music. It's like taking steroids to bench 135 pounds once.
His left foot work is incredible, never seen a drummer use the hi hat and the second kick drum pedal at once and alternating between the two. This guy is a beast!
He plays off beat on purpose on 1 drum and 1 plate only. he goes through such an immense variation of different beats, he's making my head spin. This guy is a complete monster on the drums.
The way he flows with ease around the kit is just beautiful. Instead of lots of little ideas, it sounds like one big one. That, among many other reasons, is why Benny is one of my favorite drummers, and definitely my favorite active drummer.
This solo really encapsulates all that it means to be Benny Greb: musicality, creativity, precision, technique, creativity, control, expression, creativity, groove, excitement, creativity...
So amazing how Benny Greb switches the onbeats to the left foot on the double bass part in the middle just to keep hitting the Hi-Hat with the left foot...and those single strokes later on...this dude is so crazy both technically and musically
This is a man who truly understands the entrustment. The way he physically embodies the instrument as a part of himself is unmatched. And that metric modulation!!! come on!!!
Seems like 50 incredible grooves lined up for a mistake free solo, just learning one of these is beneficial to your drumming! truly a master at his craft
At this point, 64 people disliked because, not only is Benny's left foot a better musician then their whole body, but they're naive enough to have the belief that they could do better hahaha
Maybe his solos can be boring with a few tricks added in here and there? I'm not saying Benny is bad, but there are different drummers out there for sure. Drummers with spice and flavor and emotion, like Keith Carlock.
I looked up Keith Carlock and decided to watch based on your recommendations. Watching with uneasy tension while this man had seizures on the drums, sweat pouring everywhere, and gyrating as if the throne has too hot, 14 people were shot outside my window, the whole block was set ablaze, and we had evacuate the neighborhood. When the smoke cleared one question came up more than any. Who did all this? It turns out Keith Carlock drumming was so terrible people started shooting and setting things on fire to make it stop, then lost all memory of it. I myself, killed all my fish. If it wasn't for the cameras recently installed throughout the neighborhood we'd all be in an episode of Scooby Doo, in search of the Mystery Machine. So thanks for nothing. True story.
I will always stop what I'm doing to watch a Greb solo. However, I must say that he has single-handedly made me reconsider my choice of drum brands. I'm a solid DW fan, but I cannot remember a time when I thought his Sonor gear sounded anything less than awesome. The kit he uses here is amazing; super warm resonant tones - and that floor tom!
Whenever I don't feel like playing my drums I come on TH-cam and watch a random Benny Greb performance: it has the same effect as a cup of coffee in the morning for my creativity. One of the best drummers ever FOR SURE
What a journey through the realms of groove. Amazing control & dynamics, polished off with that cymbal-scraping thing I've never seen/heard before. Stunning.
now this is one of those groove drummers i can get behind. a lot of people just do some beats and get millions of followers for no reason but this guy is great, i wish i could jam with him
James Ferrell did you get to tune your floor tom that way, I am really shock how it sounds, it is almost like a bass drum, imagine to get that kind of tune in the other toms!
I Get it all now. Make's a lot of sense now. His mixing up the Drum Beat's & Rhythms. So the Drum solo tell's a story. Instead of just Double Bass every second. In the Drum Solo.
I always enjoy seeing the “thumbs downs” from the self-appointed masters of percussion. They have an old issue of Modern Drummer magazine, a “Pearl” t-shirt from eBay and a 4-piece drum kit their mom picked up at a yard sale. They have been trying to master Wipe Out for three years and they hang out at drum shops, looking at sticks, hoping some kid will ask “Hey man, are you in a band ?” Yet, they post their negative wisdom and insight in comments, so future generations may benefit from their teachings. We should all be grateful for them.
Benny is like a killer guitarist that never palm mutes. He pronounces every damn note. Benny even sounds better than drummers who could out play him. He is a treasure.
I have to say, that was the best drumming I've ever seen. I thought of Stuart Copeland but, this was so fluid and easy like creek water flowing over rocks.
Samuel Why the hell did you even write this comment? Basically Matt Garstka is my favorite drummer, but I'm not gonna say, that one of them is better than the another one. And by the way I don't think Thomas has the musical talent of Benny. I totally appreciate his work though and I'm not gonna go commenting like "Matt Garstka is way better than you" below his videos.
The 30 people that gave a thumbs down are obviously not drummers!! More like trolls that have nothing better to do but randomly select videos to vote down and make troll comments!!
@@Nowhy Feeling is completely built through experience, benny himself once said to himself that he didn't have groove - but he practised for years until he is now the drummer with the most groove.
@@edwardbrown2142 yes, feeling like you seem to be talking about is about experience but there is also an exception of a feeling outside of experience; a "feeling" from within where one doesn't follow any "pre-made" plans. Originality lies there and it has to do with trust. If somebody only trusts what experience teaches is (feels) right, then one is bound to fail to hear the silence between the notes and so can't hear the most beautiful song - in silence. It seems impossible to find the right words to express directly what I am getting at... Expressed negatively one could say, that if someone beliefs that a person consists of all the experiences of his past then that person denies any originality in himself. What made Benny Grep groovie might not so much all the practice but his showing of humility in regards to his lack in groove. Would he had believed that he was already groovy back then and wanted to be always right, then there would be no way for him to find his, let's say, true groove/mastery (which almost all famous musicians nowadays lack - like their fans which don't dance). Surly, one has also to practice what one preaches ;).
Honestly, Greb is THE personalisation of Groove/Deep pocket except for Steve Gadd I would say...so tight and laid back same time...and what I like about his solos beyond any (unbelieveable) technical prowess is the humor & happiness he puts into which clearly shows that he, unlike many other "Stars", doesn't take himself soo freakin' serious
As Taydoff mentioned, it's his signature Sonor snare. I've been playing for several decades, and even though I've had many favorite drummers, I've never bought signature gear - with the exception of this one. It's SUPER versatile; you find plenty of Benny solos where he uses two of them, for different tones/pitches. It cost me roughly $950 USD, and I don't regret it one bit...
Jon Richt thanks for ur answers dude, it's so helpful. but if i may ask you again, is that true benny uses coated heads too as his snare reso, or is it a clear reso? what do he uses for his snare resonant? thanks by the way 👍😁😁
Adil Lukman - I'm pretty sure he uses clear resonant heads on the resonant side of the drum. I'm not 100% sure of this - but I'm fairly confident for several reasons. One of those reasons is at the end of his "Art & Science of Groove" DVD. He spends an hour talking about how to tune your drums, and he does a demonstration on the snare. In that demonstration, he shows clear on the resonant side... This isn't proof, of course. However, I don't know many kit drummers who use batter heads on the reso side, and I assume from Benny's demonstration, he probably doesn't do it very often either. Hope that helps!

Yeah man. I couldn't believe my eyes at first.
i also on occasion use both pedals at the same time, but not even close to greb's skill
check out dennis chambers and antonio sánchez then
If you wanna see more examples of amazing left foot work check horacio “el negro” hernandez. Amazing independence by both guys.

Benny has such a nice feeling, love his solos!

Few drummers grab your attention like that with a solo. Incredibly entertaining to watch his use of dynamics.

Ah ok.
These types of rhythms are the peak of drumming. It literally can not get better than this.
Benny is a kind of drummer that is able to argue with metronome and win the discussion
underated comment!
One of the best groovy drum Solo I have seen so far! He is exploring so many sections and rhythm patterns!
Insane drumming and rhythmic diversity
woa...best part..the start, the middle, the end and everything inbetween. wonder what it feels like to have that much talent.

The most melodic drum solo you will ever hear. What a man!
Não há adjetivos para descrever esse baterista. Incrível. Groove sensacional.
On another level this fella ..... technically the best out there for me ... grooves like a mother and SO inventive
And the award for best sounding stack and floor tom goes to...
No but seriously, how does he tune his floor tom. I need to know.
also get a sonor, its just that sonor sound that makes it so awesome and brain meltingly good
James Ferrell did you get to tune your floor tom that way, I am really shock how it sounds, it is almost like a bass drum, imagine to get that kind of tune in the other toms!
Stack?
Jahomey505 the 10-12 toms are called stack
Still possibly the greatest solo I’ve heard in my life

Best drum solos ever come from this man. Let's be real
that groove at 3:44 ... jesus fuck how is this even possible?
Me too...
No words can describe how good BG is. Thanks Drumeo!
This is so interesting to watch, from beginning to end.. great playing!
back to this video for some of the most chill and technically insane drumming available.
I knew Benny was gr8 but my mind = blown with this one!
I just got lost in each and every beat he plays 😍 How smoothly he handles the kit ❤
Talk about thinking outside the box. Very impressive.
I have to say, that was the best drumming I've ever seen. I thought of Stuart Copeland but, this was so fluid and easy like creek water flowing over rocks.
id sell my entire kit to have his floor tom

All this was fkn INSANE but what really brought it for me was 5:58 when he just went in the POCKET so clean and exact, just amazing, wow 🤘🏼🤝

This whole genuine felt like some sort of conversation and it’s a damn amazing one at that too brilliant work.
This is the best drum solo ever, in my humble opinion.
