    I think everyone's missing the obvious point to all this, he says it himself; The Great Darkness simply wants to resurrect David Bowie.

    "I am the canvas against which you play your struggles" I like MUCH more this version of the Great Darkness. Not just a "bad guy behind the bad guy" but as the natural force of conflict that makes character's good nature shine. That is why it is all of the villains, because it is antagonism in itself, the Trigon to Raven, the Lucifer to Constantine, the Darkseid to the Justice League.
    And you cannot blame antagonism, just antagonISTS. If there is a way to represent an "ultimate evil" for DC, that is as elegant as you could have it

    Makes sense to be honest. Being a fundamental part of everything would mean the great darkness would be indifferent to good or bad. It just exists and light is what gives it meaning/value or it has nothing to contrast itself against. If someone were to be able to harness gravity for example and use it to destroy we wouldn't blame the gravity it's just a force that exists.

    • @Xerion1
      @Xerion1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Philosophically, light doesn't give it meaning. That's why it's called "The Great Darkness". Darkness, or oblivion exists without light. The same could be said about light not having anything to contrast itself with if darkness didn't exist. They're both necessary for juxtaposition.

    While I don’t like how the Great Darkness is “behind everything” like Dr. Manhattan as a conscious force, I do love the sort of poetry of Darkness appreciating light. How it’s just a titanic force out there sort of like the Presence that isn’t directly involved but slightly influences things by existing.
    That trope of darkness and light coexisting is always fascinating to see in stories and I wasn’t expecting it to be explored in DC. Hopefully this concept continues and isn’t changed later!

      You're confusing philosophy with mindless nonsense. There's nothing deep about this and saying there is no darkness without light or creation without destruction. This is even contradictory writing as the narrative claims the darkness to be neither good nor evil and yet it is the cause of violence, rage and every twisted impulse people feel. As if those are universal constants.
      Do you think a lion feels rage when it kills? Does a Cuckoo feel jealousy and spite when it lays it's egg in another birds nest? No. Cruelty, rage and hatred are uniquely human behaviours and attitudes so this idea of it being some elemental aspect of the universe just puts this character as nothing more than a part of the emotional spectrum.

    A Super Séance? Like Lord Frieza always feared!
    And if they’re going where I thinks they’re going with The Great Darkness, then I’m glad of it. Marvel can get away with the whole “The One Above All and One Below All are cosmic beings beyond comprehension, two sides of the same coin blah blah.” But DC, straight up, always had God, capital G and the Devil as canonical characters in their universe. If the Great Darkness is just the Devil, no pastiches, accept no substitutes, that’s what I’m talking about.

    • @Synge2050
      @Synge2050 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @mmanzanozr1 ok that's good then, but like you said, the general formula of comics is to create the next big baddy I'm sure the status quo is gonna change again soon.
      Biggest reason why I haven't been able to get back into comics is whenever they do something I really like, two years later it's irrelevant and whatever was being set-up has been thrown away for something new that was never foreshadowed.
      Superhero comics from Marvel and DC should use more permanent consequences in their stories, otherwise eventually nobody is going to care anymore.

    Editor's Note: apologies if this thought has already been brought up or if I missed something.
    His wording also suggests the Great Darkness is the embodiment of the Bad side of the Good Vs. Bad equation - I'm thinking along the lines of the Endless and their type of influance/power/etc... Most importantly, though, The Great Darkness is an "aspect" of, in general, the overall comic book story, and more specifically, the DC continuity uni/omni/metaverse - this story based reality. The Presence being the opposite side - though an argument should be made that in the context of the story, both these aspects, good and bad, are one in the same - they ARE the story.
    So, of course, neither of THEM would want things to end... so a character, surly and with bad intentions, is the catalyst for the story to have it's necessary conflict to insure interest, and LET THE STORY CONTINUE.
    Just early morning thoughts absorbing your summary - love the channel man.

    I'm pretty sure Alan Moore would not be happy with this depiction of the "Great Darkness" as the ultimate manifestation of evil. In the original Swamp Thing story, the whole meta-purpose of the great darkness is that it was "defined" into existence by it's encounters with numerous heroic entities that made assumptions about it's nature. Ultimately, the Presence reached out, they shook hands, and the idea was that blanket black and white "good and evil" morality was going to fade away post-reboot in favor of a more nuanced sort of moral sense.

    • @torrancemoore6152
      @torrancemoore6152 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The implication was that the great darkness wasn't really evil though. It was more neutral just as the presence is since it's the other half. Pariah is the villain of this.
      Regardless, Alan Moore wouldn't like this since he doesn't really like the genre as a whole.

    So. A hunch on my part. In the end it's just a Mercy Killing. Pariah wants out. And like Cyborg Superman, he keeps trying to get himself killed by being thrown into every Crisis, but it never takes. The curse is that he lives, bears witness and suffers. In that re-imagining, the only outcome the Great Darkness would accept is straight out of _It's a Wonderful Life:_ If Pariah can't die, ever, you'd best make damned sure he's never born.
    Meaning Pariah gets dead either before he finds his Anti-Matter Chamber, or he dies from the Chamber and doesn't survive _Crisis on Infinite Earths._ The result is you only get ONE multiverse, as large or small as it becomes after worlds get snarfed by The Great Darkness. Darkseid, Pariah, The Quintessence, the Original Trinity if not the core Mainstream Justice League, they all have to die and stay dead as existence once again *becomes smaller* to fit in A New Multiverse. Essentially the idea of The Bleed--a 7-dimensional hyper-snowflake whose blades are each whole multiverses--gets barred entirely as most of it becomes a void to placate The Great Darkness.
    This is DC's saying "time marches ON (on,on, on . . .)" as loudly as it can while it shrinks its canon forcibly and makes it work for a decade of stability or so. The torch forcibly gets passed, not just to a new Flash but a whole new League, while the Nerd Men way over there foam at the mouth as _Doomsday Clock's_ stunted multiverse actually comes to pass. The New Frontier is no longer Infinite, but at Factorial 52 Worlds (52! Parallel Earths) large, the distinction only matters on New Earth-Prime, to comic book editors . . .
    and perhaps to the newly reset heroes of Earth-Prime itself. :) Which is where the next damned thing happens, minus Pariah, of course.

    • @mmanzanozr1

      @@mmanzanozr1 I'm not saying I disagree with you. But here's the point of it: it's so clear and present it may as well be a tautology. Your point that is. OF COURSE that trick never works (/Rocky the Flying Squirrel). That's not the question. The question is, is this a short-short rebootening (like what happened with the New 52) or is this something intended and maybe coerced into being longer-term like A New Earth was post-_Crisis on Infinite Earths?_
      All signs including the literal title on the comics themselves suggest the latter and frankly? We fans may have worn out our welcome and influence on this. Detective Comics, Comics, Inc. Inc. might well be in a "bite me fanboy" mood and just force the issue for a decade-plus. And I'm just noting that I see this coming, and that it's irritating. :)

    The most interesting part of great darkness and what he says makes him an aspect of Ahriman god of evil... Ahriman is in eternal fight with his brother Ahura Mazda the God of good... Whenever one side wins their father Zurvan The primordial all father god of creations , infinite time, space, dark matter and destiny resurrect the child who died and reset the universe.

    I've been reading the main series and find it lacking. But with this Tie-in, Ram V knocked it outta the park. And Yes, Rob and anyone else should be covering Moore's Swamp Thing. Almost 35 years later and it still influences anything and everything supernatural in DC and comics as a whole.

    I think it's a dynamic in which the Great Darkness doesn't actively try to conquer or destroy everything because, in a world where it's nothing but blackness, light is it's only entertainment. The opposite could probably be said about The Presence.

    The Great Darkness, just that name or whatever reminds me of, what was that, the never ending story and the Nothing? That's the first thing I thought of whenever you said the great darkness. I know their two different things and two different stories, but still, kinda the same....

    20:30 the more interesting question is who would win in a power struggle, the great darkness or the presence. But if they are being true to the philosophy, neither one is stronger than the other and neither one could exist without the other.
    Ofc Lucifer is weaker than the source of all chaos, obviously. The only people who could make that mistake know nothing about religion or philosophy. Though Lucifer is often confused with the ultimate evil.

    I read Marvel's Ultimates the complete collection and I keep making connections between Marvel and DC that are startling. As Adam Brashear and the rest of the team traverse the omni-verse and exit through to the outside, Thanos is found surrounded by guess what? DARKNESS! oblivion - the absence of everything very much like the great darkness you read about in this story. I just love these parallels, they're elusive but intriguing.

      I can turn Superman into a pony with a spell just like I could any other person. Superman has no resistance to it. But beings like Shazam and Wonderwoman who have magical resistance would be able to resist it. So yes you could effect Superman with magic and even kill him if you are strong enough.
