Because your response options do not contain negative numbers or a zero, I would recommend taking your highest response option and adding 1 (4+1 = 5), and subtracting responses on your original variable from 5. So, in your situation, 1 would become a 4 (5-1 =4), 2 would become a 3 (5-2 =3), a 3 would become a 2 (5-3 =2), 4 would become 1 (5-4 =1). I hope this helps!
