Jazz Drumming Prodigy Reacts To Whiplash

  • If you saw 2014’s award-winning movie Whiplash, you probably had questions:
Did they do it right, or is the actor overdramatizing what drummers actually do?
When Whiplash came out back in 2014, everyone was talking about it. The Academy Award-winning film covers the experience of a young jazz drummer and his intense music instructor. If you’re a drummer, everyone from your best friend to your weird uncle has probably sent you the trailer or a clip from the movie at some point.
Hollywood tends to add dramatic effect where it wouldn’t exist in real life, and a movie about drummers is no exception. So we asked Greyson Nekrutman, a young jazz drumming prodigy himself, to react to Whiplash and see how much of it looked convincing.
He’s the same age as the main character and has also had to work hard to prove himself. Check out the full video to hear Greyson's take on Hollywood's biggest drumming movie.

The point of the scene it's Fletcher trying to "bully" him. He said in that same scene "we got Buddy Rich here!" So that's like him trying to get Andrew to feel awful. Also in the first 2 attempts you can clearly hear Andrew has indeed rushing, a lot.

    • @michaelmiradezandband

He's rushing because the instructor counts off in a way no real musician ever would. Also there's an insane delay between the count and when the groove comes in. Thematically, this all works fine, but this shit is impossible to sit through if you've ever been in an actual rehearsal.

The performance mentality fletcher’s going for is an idea I’ve seen occasionally in jazz musicians which is confidence to the extreme. It is having an intimate knowledge with your performance akin to how one might know and love their romantic partner. The goal in gaslighting/bullying them like this is to present a stressful presence of authority, and be so confident in your performance that you defend like you would a romantic partner you know better than anyone else.
The stakes being presented (things like self-worth, validity in the program, etc..) are used to force you into two options; break down and quit or figure out what it takes to have the level of confidence that a master would have. That kind of decision is made in the practice room.
The music industry is cutthroat, and it’s only getting harder and harder to find gigs. If you don’t have what it takes, then you don’t get jobs, plain and simple. A degree won’t just give you that kind of grit, but this kind of teacher will.
All that being said Fletchers a dick and doesn’t really get that point across in a constructive way. It’s just abusive.

People forget that the whole point of the film is fletcher sees a musician who has the chance to be “one of the greats” but in order for That to happen, he must be tortured, embarrassed, and humiliated, fletcher doesn’t give af about the tempo, he just wants to torture the fuck out of Neiman, and make sure he’s always thinking in time no matter what

He is striving to be best of the best. You can’t determine his inadequacies because you, yourself, is nowhere near the top.
In your ears, like in the main character’s, you find his rhythm spotless, but that only proves you are at his level! And his level isn’t perfect, like the instructor points out!

    • @SealMeall

@@branch737 the truth is we can only guess. And the instructor’s reputation, skill and earlier life is a strong indicator towards that the *best guess* is towards his favor, ears and judgment.
I myself can’t hear the difference but that is as expected, reasoned by his high level
