I arrived on P.I. on 1 April, 1956, Platoon 115. A week later, Platoon 71 was involved in the Ribbon Creek tragedy. At the time, DI's did not wear campaign covers, only Gunnys on the rifle range wore them. I'm now 80 years old, but the sounds and smells of Parris Island are still with me. There is a book on Amazon, "We'll All Die As Marines," written by a fellow Marine who entered the Corps in '58 and retired as a Colonel more than thirty six years later that really expresses how we'll always be Marines. Semper Fi.
@@mikelawrence1876 Mike, the Ribbon Creek disaster was real. I was in Platoon 115, brand new on the Island, and Platoon 71 was on the rifle range. So they were ahead of us. When we heard the scuttlebutt about the drownings we thought some DI had held their heads under the water and drowned them like that. Of course, that isn't how it happened, but you remember those first days after you arrived when you are wondering what in the heck you had gotten yourself into by joining the Corps. In November of '58 I met McKeon, the former DI of Platoon 71.. We were in the same squad bay at main side hospital at LeJeune. At that time he was a Private after having been reduced in rank at the Courts Martial in '56. When I arrived on PI in 1956, McKeon had been a SSgt (E5). I was just on Parris Island yesterday. I graduated from Parris Island in 1984, 3rd Battalion. My son just graduated 3rd Battalion yesterday. I went back and found the old parade deck (that is all that is there). All the barracks from our day, as well as the chapel and the chow hall are gone. The headquarters building (now "Legal Services") is still there and the 3rd Battalion logo is on the old parade deck. You can see it on Google Maps. The satellite photo is old and you can see the old barracks and chow hall. I was literally walking on it yesterday. Good times. They built a new 3rd Battalion closer to Mainside.
As I recall, Open Ranks means First Squad takes two steps forward before dressing right; Second Squad takes one step forward, then dresses right; Third Squad stands fast and dresses right; and Fourth Squad takes one step back and dresses right. The platoon leader then checks all the squads to make sure the ranks are lined up, adjusts them, then stands front and centered on the platoon from four paces away; calls “Ready, front!” and commands the platoon to cover behind First Squad. It’s been a hot minute, so I hope I got it right.
