  • How to ride Bus in Japan, Kanazawa. International friends of mine here in Japan requested me to do this video on how to ride the bus. This may look so simple and easy for some people, but it is a bit challenging for some foreigners to navigate routes. When I first arrived in Japan, I remember that I tried searching for videos on how to navigate the route when I want to ride the bus but can't find any. So I hope this video will help.

🛑NOTE: When the location you are planning to stop appears on the screen above in front of the bus driver, PRESS the RED BUTTON you can see them on the sides near the bus windows or sometimes on the round metal bars you can see these bars along bus' hallway (like a post). It is important to press that button so the bus will stop at the next bus stop station where you plan to go out. Also always remember to TAP your Ica Card when entering the bus or GET a bus TICKET. You can see the machine right in front of the bus entrance.

Thank you for sharing. It is very useful to know how to take a bus in Japan. I have a question. Are you required to take the bus ticket if you are paying with the IC card?

You don’t have to take the bus ticket…

Wait so you have to change your coins manually before paying at end? You can’t just put your bills and your coins and it will spit out the change for you when you leave??

Yes, exactly! You also have the option to use prepaid bus cards. Which is very convenient.

Thanks for your video. Say the Fare is Y230 and you have a Y1000 note. You wait till the bus stops, then insert your ticket near the bus driver. Do you then insert the Y1000 note in the machine? Or how do you get the correct change for the fair?

Hi, that is really a good question. You can change your 1000Y into 500, 100, 50, or 10 coins. The changing machine is right next to where you insert your fare. Then you prepare the specific amount to insert into the machine for your fare. Or, you can ask the bus driver. They speak enough English to instruct passengers on how to pay their fare.

If I bring some baggage, where should I put it?

If it is with wheels you can just bring inside making sure not to block the bus center way where people pass. Or if it like a bagpack you can put it on you lap while sitting or if you are standing you can carry it to your front. Usually you can see poster on the wall as instruction when carrying your packbags.
