The IZ song you played is the one Iam covered. He was referring to his going on his own after so many of his family members had passed away and his leaving the Mākaha Sons of Niʻihau (with whom he was a member since he was in high school) and about the Hawaiian people and the sovereignty movement he was very much involved in. The more upbeat one was the first recording:which was really about fixing a broken relationship and looking at it in a positive way.

Was very disappointed in how GMA treated Iam’s segment. I felt they put advertising their channel above honouring his song and Hawaii.
Thank you for retracting your comments about Iam doing a different, more upbeat version. Was sad that anyone would think another’s tribute should be done a particular way.
My heart goes out to Iam. I truly hope there is someone there mentoring him, supporting him and helping him deal with the whirlwind he’s caught up in since his American Idol win… all the while still grieving for his father and now heartsick for his people. Much love to you Iam!

For a time like this that these people who’ve lost everything. I can see God had His hand on Iam even from the first tryout where he didn’t go through God saved him for this time in his life because this is a time we all need his songs and personality. He had him wait for a reason and a purpose.

Iamʻs message from his first "Starting All Over Again" post (not the song) appeared in the live streaming benefit concert for Maui in Honolulu (and Hawaiʻi Island) on Sunday. If he were living in Hawaiʻi, he would certainly have been invited to join all the other local artists. I think this concert will give you a better idea of the importance of the Hawaiian language and culture in Hawaiʻi and how it is so much a part of the music and spirit of Aloha and ʻOhana for the community. Thatʻs why Iam needs to move back to Hawaiʻi eventually if he wants to feel a part of this community. But for now, he has to take advantage of the opportunities AI has brought him -- just hope heʻs not overdoing it because his voice is getting hoarse again. Or maybe it was too early in the morning when he appeared on GMA.
