    The producers have acknowledged there are no sounds in space, but say they added some for dramatic “license” since the scenes just “didn’t” work without them.

    Holden sent that message to ensure that Mars couldn't just cover up what happened to the Canterbury by making Holden and crew just disappear.
    Also, in the books the Belters and Martians are physically different. People who grew up in lower gravity are taller, thinner, and have larger heads. The limitations of a live action TV show make it harder to show this on the show.

    • @biocapsule7311
      @biocapsule7311 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      One of the few things I dislike about Season 1 is they feel the need to restart the crews relationship from 0 for no good reason. There was much less of a reason for the group to stay together after a certain point. The original situation of them knowing each other for a much longer time made better sense for what happens to their relationship, more reasonable for how the group dynamic shape out. More important why Amos supports Holden in the book, from the way they react in season 1, you wouldn't get why he does so later.

    • @thontor
      @thontor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@biocapsule7311 They changed it from the book so that the show had somewhere to go with the relationships. If they all start out as friends already at the beginning of the show there's not as much room for character and relationship development.

    • @biocapsule7311
      @biocapsule7311 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@thontor I disagree because they have no problem further 'exploring' their relationships in the books. If anything, adding such developed kind of further complicates an already dense plot. The book is more nature and logical because you learn why they are close from their conversation instead of them having develop on the fly. It's especially jawing because of Amos. He switch from somewhat hostile to very supportive in way too short a time, which is supremely out of character. I always thought they did the change so they can cramp in more martian and OPA exposition into it. But that doesn't make sense either since they have no problem doing so in the book. And yes, while books and series aren't suppose to be the same, but the authors are involve in the making so I was expecting a closer treatment.
      One change that I was hoping for and really liked was what happen on Eros. That was a huge mistake on the book because it almost made the 'you know what' very generic.

    4:24 So about the sounds in exterior space shots. If you listen closely most of them sound as if experienced from the INSIDE of the ship, reflected through the hull of the ship.
    No matter how hard science the show tries to be it would be real boring real fast without exterior sounds, so i think to make sounds be a POV from inside of the ship is pretty clever workaround

    • @robertwinslade3104
      @robertwinslade3104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Agreed; accurately depicting the silence of space can be an incredibly effective film-making decision, but it only retains it's impact when used sparingly like certain scenes in films like Interstellar and Ad Astra have. But it's basically impossible to do so sparingly in a show like The Expanse where so much screen time is spent in space

    • @thepuncakian2024
      @thepuncakian2024 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Here's the thing though. Ceres is 40-50% water by volume. In the show, all of the water has been removed. That means that when its spun up, there's going to be far less forces exerted. Also, the structure is most likely reinforced with really materials such as carbon nanotubes or the like, so it would be able to withstand more forces. Given that it takes place 300+ years in the future, I think technology would have progressed to the point where something like this certainly wouldn't be easy, but wouldn't be impossible either. IIRC, in Leviathan Wakes, it is stressed that is not by any means easy to spin up asteroids, being called humanity's greatest technological achievements, taking upwards of 10 years to complete.

      They wrote those scenes first in English, then had their language expert translate the lines into Belter Creole (inventing new words as necessary), then tried out different combinations of English and Belter Creole mixed together in different proportions until they had dialogue that audiences would be able to pick up and understand.

    OPA stands for "Outer Planets Alliance". Means the Belt and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. (Though the moons and the major belt installations are mostly officially under the auspices of Earth or Mars, the residents of the belt born there resent that fact.)

    Ceres: Dwarf planet in the asteroid belt. The station there was mined out and is owned by earth
    Security on Ceres is provided by an earth-based security firm, Star Helix. Miller, a belter, works as a “cop” for that earth corp. Thus your feeling that he felt bad for Diogo, and other belters, isn’t all that far off the mark. Miller is a conflicted man. A belter working for earth to “oppress” fellow belters; he has an odd haircut displaying his divided loyalties... only one side of his head is shaved.

    Ceres is the largest known asteroid and the only dwarf planet in the inner solar system, and the first asteroid discovered by humanity. It lies in the asteroid belt.
    Ceres is the site of Ceres Station, a space station that was one of the first sites of human colonization. Half a generation after humanity arrived there, Tycho Manufacturing managed to spin up the asteroid, which gave it a gravity of 0.3 g. The station has tens of thousands of kilometers of tunnels.

    Earth does not supply the belters with water. The ice haulers do that. But other materials, minerals and such are most likely transported to earth and mars.
    I always thought of the OPA (Outer Planets Alliance) like something akin to the IRA. It has a political wing but also elements that are considered as terrorists.
    Oh, also you might have missed a detail with the water stealing scene.
    Great reaction, already looking forward to the next vid.

      The use of the word "Alliance" makes it more likely that it is an association of many different groups. We have been given zero information at this point of the show as to how many different and separate organizations consider themselves as part ot this alliance, how loose or tight it is, the nature of each of those separate and different organizations, or even the extent to which the individual organizations are organized. Questions as to what it is are natural at this point of the show, but we really know almost nothing about it. Might be a good idea to simply report that based upon what has been revealed as of this point in the show, viewers really don't know anything about it other than what was summarized in the text at the beginning of s1.e1. and that some of the residents of Ceres support it.

    I really envy anyone at this stage of their experience with The Expanse. You guys have so much high quality sci-fi ahead of you. This story starts as a detective's tale of tracking a missing person, and by the time you start to feel like you understand this dark future of political intrigue, injustice, and inequality, it throws a radical disruption into the mix. A disruption that will change the course of human history in our galaxy.

    The water is for the belters primarily. Water can also be broken down into oxygen and hydrogen (oxygen for breathing and fuel, hydrogen for fuel). It is also more practical to get water from asteroids or comets for inhabitants in space than it is to get it from a planet due to the lower gravity.

    Earth has more stuff to worry about compared to Mars thats why Earth can't afford a stealth program. Just social services alone would probably be larger than Mars total budgeting. Also Earth is still a place with many cultures. Mars culture is just Mars/space stuff. Like I said just more stuff to have to do on Earth. One place is streamlined and can get things done cheaper the other has more hoops to jump through which makes things more costly. Another good thing to think about is getting manufactured stuff off Mars surface is easier and cheaper than doing the same on Earth. Taking things off Earth surface for space use is cost prohibitive. Once you're established in space, all resources should also come from space, WAY easier to do so.

  • @sabkobds
    @sabkobds 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, Ceres is classified as dwarf planet (that's what Pluto is demoted to)... There are some moons similar in size, but Ceres is free in its orbit around the sun.
    I think you get soon explanation about OPA soon (what it means).
    This effect with water is called Coriolis effect. This is same effect causing sink water spins other direction on south and north hemisphere on Earth, but here is it gained because the scene is near the center of Ceres.
    It's really easy to remember those facts about gravity: Mars has about 1/3rd Earth's gravity, and Moon (Luna here) has about 1/6th.

    Whatever Earth or Mars might need in the way of natural resources, it is far less expensive to get it from the asteroid belt than haul it up and out of Earth's gravity well. Mars actually has quite a bit of underground water resources, based upon what we have already learned as of 2020. We were told that Ceres was under water rationing before we saw the first scene involving the Canterbury. We were not specifically told, but I think it was clearly implied, that the Cantebury's return with a cargo of ice was eagerly awaited by the populace of Ceres, so learning it was nuked was a huge disappointment in addition to the provocation involved in somebody blowing up a vessal stationed in The Belt and crewed by Belters.
    I'd agree that we aren't told exactly what metals or minerals are being mined by Belters out in the asteroid belt, but we know in 2020 that a goodly number of asteroids would be very lucrative for anybody to mine. We just can't get out there and back efficiently enough to make it economical now.

    • @yungo1rst
      @yungo1rst 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      After a few years of that mining of asteroids it would kick-start the exploration of the solar system. It would probably be cheaper to use that to construct moon mining on the side not seen by earth for a refueling or staging platform.

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yungo1rst Most of what I've read about plans to mine the asteroids was in the nature of long-term corporate planning, with part of that planning being done because it is anticipated as being quite lucrative, albeit after a big infrastructure build Ideally, I would think, solar powered refineries would orbit the earth and only the highly refined final product would make it down to the surface of Earth. Rare earth minerals would probably be the first to be mined.

    "The Belt" refers to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres is a dwarf planet and largest rock in that belt, so it makes sense for Ceres to be the capital of the belt.
    Real Ceres is covered in ice though, which does not appear to be the case in the show or else they wouldn't have to send ships to get ice from somewhere else
