Thank you James for this real world comparison! These types of videos are so informative for folks! I’d love in the future if you’re able to borrow an R1 and compare that head to head with the C80. The R1’s Raw 6K video, Clog2, dual CF express type b slots, weather sealing, IBIS, etc etc, make it a compelling counter I think to the C80.
Great review and after owning the C80 for a week now, I can honestly say that I am VERY pleased with its performance. I also own the C70. I was lucky to be able to add the hybrid VCM trio (24, 35, and 50) to my kit and without a doubt the idea behind these lenses totally makes sense - same character profile, beautiful colors, ultra sharp and fast focusing capabilities (compared to the C70), same weight and size, which makes switching between the lenses on a gimbal a total breeze! I highly recommend the C80 and any of the hybrid VCM lenses. Cheers from San Francisco and happy holidays!
I purchased a used C70 awhile back mainly because my R5 overheated on long form videos. Once you dial in the settings the C70 image is good as any. The C70 is. Beast with a sharp lens. The c80 is intriguing. I am a photographer first. Video from my R5, R6 M2 and my Sony Fx30 is neatly as good on the C70. Slog 3 workflows are now a habit for me 🤗
R5c that’s the camera to beat with the new battery lpe6p and firmware 1.0.9.1 released a couple days ago it’s crazy how canon made us wait 2 years to make this camera excellent
@ I thought is was a gimmick coming from all the other TH-camrs saying you will get double the battery life Josh satin tested and it had better results than the R5 mark 2 I bought 2 batteries and I don’t even bring my old ones anymore it’s that better ! Crazy I just don’t understand how canon didn’t think of it earlier! But I’m happy that the did
@@mrdamiansinghthat’s good to know. I’ve been debating a second R5 II or a R5c. The R5c can be found for around $3k here in the US which is a great deal.
The R5mkII without oversampling (4K 50 and 4K 100) looks almost the same as C70 in my experience. Nice and a bit soft. R5mkII has nicer bokeh of course. Thanks for the initial review James. I'm grateful for this comparison to the R5mkII. The big difference being the footage at 12800. Wow.
Man maybe I have a setting wrong somewhere. I’ll have to spend some time comparing different settings to see what the culprit was. Right now with eye AF off it’s pretty good.
Thanks for video! Surprisingly similar c80 and R52, at least the color difference could be matched. For example in R52 under log menu settings, one can adjust the hue to green, I do that with my R5. Blonds are easy to render the skins well but when people get older red veins come visible I would imagine c80/70 would be a clean start without much color correction. Still surprised how close R52 is to the c70/80 cameras. Great video and beautiful shots!
@ that’s a good point, it could have contributed. I didn’t consider that when testing. I used the NiSi true color ND though which in my experience is one of the more neutral NDs.
C80 in low light looks so much better than R5MII! And yes, skin colors are much better too. I hope they will fix the autofocus hunting problem with a firmware update, though I would say the C70 would probably hunt in this situation too as it doesn't work well while underexposed.
Now I see where the incredible footage is coming from on the 28-70 test on desert island :-). The C80 looks the part, but cost is a bit steep for the average wage owner :-).
“I prefer to keep the C70 because I already have APS-C lenses and a Speed Booster for my older EF lenses. However, for a B camera, I bought the Canon R5 Mark II. It offers excellent low-light performance (up to ISO 4000) and serves as a versatile hybrid camera with an outstanding photo and AF mode
James - curious what lenses you were using when referring to the AF pulsing. I know you mention the RF 35mm f1.8 in the comments below. The reason I ask is I've had that same problem with that lens on the C70. Everything looked fine on the screen while filming but reviewing the footage afterward the camera AF was pulsing from time to time, losing focus and then regaining it. So, it may be an issue tied to that specific lens. The RF 35mm f1.8 is particularly bad in that regard. I've not had the problem with the new RF L VCM prime lenses nor with the RF L USM zoom lenses. The RF L USM zoom lenses also always held AF focus better for me than the RF L 1.2 primes (50mm & 85mm). I would use the RF L 1.2 primes a lot for A & B cams in interviews on the C70 in order to get shallow DoF but I always made sure to treat them like MF lenses. Acquire focus via AF and then lock it down. Not leave it active during filming. I didn't find that they pulsed but that if AF was left on they could shift wildly out of focus and then stay that way until I intervened.
I think the RF 35mm 1.8 was definitely the worst culprit. The RF 28-70 2.8 was slightly better but still exhibited the issue. I have found the same, that my RF 24-70 2.8 performs a lot better on the C80. It’s just a shame as I was hoping to be able to use one of the smaller stabilised primes with the C80 for travel.
@@JamesReader If you mean the *RF 28-70 2.0 then I'm not surprised by that lens either. I tried a loaner from CPS a few years ago on the C70 and the R5 and didn't like it. Slow to focus and soft from the get-go wide open. I've taken the R5C and the RF 35mm f1.8 + RF 50mm 1.8 traveling and it's a nice light kit. I prefer it over a L zoom for travel as it's so light and less worry. But, yeah, can't rely on the 35mm to hold focus for video. *I forgot about the new non-L RF 28-70 2.8 STM zoom. I see you just reviewed it so I'll take a look.
Nice comparison James, if you could only keep one of the three which would it be? I feel the C80 is more future proof albeit less filmic, and I’ll get the rumoured R6 mark III for stills/b-cam…
Cheers Johnny! Ah man that's tough. I'd have to keep the R5 II just for it's photo capabilities but would be gutted to see the other two go. Which would you keep? I'm guessing the C70?
Hi James. Thanks for the vid. Nice work. If you have time for this question? Can the c80 produce h.264 and h.265 compression, and can you select mp4 and mov? Or does it default to one or the other with xf-avc, xf-avc s? (I assume you only get h.265 mov w xf-hevc files.)
@@JamesReader My main question is does the crop mode fix the R5II soft 4K60 issue...?? (some Sony cameras go from binning to full sensor readout when switching into 1.5 crop mode)
I have! They are great on the C80. I’ve used the 24mm and 35mm the most. The 24 is really great, I used it with digital stabilisation and found it to be a really versatile focal length and nice and lightweight on the C80.
@@JamesReader Thanks I'm pretty much sold on the C80 and will probably pick it up next summer, have you had a chance to use the R1? Id really like to hear your review of it
Thanks for the raw RAW videos. Honestly, it turns out that the video from R5 is five times heavier? Such files are very difficult for my system to handle. I would prefer files from the C80. And I still don't quite understand. I processed the files the same way, but for some reason the R5 has a bright circle in the center. Can someone tell me what I did wrong?
No problem! Yeah the R5 II is a bit more intensive to edit on my system too. Do are you seeing the circle only in the RAW footage? Or the regular 4k too?
I see lots and lots of magenta in your canon image. You may are so much used to it you dont notice it anymore but anytime i see a canon image i think why is there so much purple/magenta in it ?
As a C70 owner I will stay on it. Full frame option kind a nice but even F1.8 lenses I stay on F2.8. Blur background most of the base not helps telling a story. And yes C70 softer but DGI sensor fantastic. Compare R5C (I also own) sorry but no way... C70 hands down more practical and do the works much better.
Really hard to let go of the C70! Yeah I personally never really shoot below 2.8 in video anyway. Only really talking heads do I use a faster aperture. The R5C looks great but unfortunate about the battery life
@@JamesReader I keep the R5C in indoor shootings, there hard to see the difference compere to C70. But outdoor shootings C70 is a killer. My favorite lens for now 2RF 4-105mm F2.8( super nice render on highlights) but like to try Rf 24mm f1.4 on C70.
