Kyle. I just returned from Afghanistan and I made my entire battalion shoot at least once per week. I had several VTAC barriers built and we practiced shooting from every position shown in "Green Eyes and Black rifles". We then brought vehicles on the range (mostly ford Rangers) and practiced shooting under, around and over them. Hopefully I can attend one of your training classes someday.
The sound quality is high enough that if you listen closely you can hear the safety being manipulated between shots (as well as see it). Great video. Thank you for the training.
SWM952, RESTING the barrel on the barricade (mostly) works. Any sort of pressure on the barrel when it's on the barricade will severely affect accuracy (by as much as 2-3 feet at 100 yards). -Kyle
SGM Lamb, We completed this drill thru VTAC and have used it more than we care to discuss..We feel the "dope" you all are teaching is top notch and worth every penny spent..Thank you!
Juggernaut Normally for the 9 hole drill we do touch the barricade. We do this because we are shooting targets at extended ranges. If we practice shooting without the use of the barricade for support, we normally do that through a target with holes cut in it. We use the cardboard targets because the barricades wont last long when we back off from the barricade, targets are cheaper than plywood. Hope this helps Kyle
Zippy The drill is actually intended to get shooters to use what they can. Once they are comfortable with all of the positions we make them use cover as much as possible. Hope you like the drills. Kyle
@jpugh216 Normally the plans are on our web site but we just changed to the new site so I've included a link to the PDF in the drill description. They are also in our book, Green Eyes and Black Rifles. Kyle
@VikingTactics Thanks for the quick reply. I'll definitely add this to the list of drills to try, my club doesn't have a barricade like that so there's a little work to do but shouldn't be too difficult. I hear ya about using gravity, will have to try it both ways. I guess all the re-positioning he had to do at 1:45 and then 1:54 threw me off, I liked how 2nd shooter used support hand palm-down under the foregrip, looked real solid. Thanks for putting these vids on the web!
@daharde During that particular drill we were trying to get the point across that we were teaching different positions. If we had stated you must use the barricade for cover, you are correct. This barricade is merely to enhance our ability to force folks into different positions. Thanks Kyle
10- year old video. My colleagues and I tried this today for the first time......it kicked our butts and ruined one guy's optic in the dispersing dust (el cheapo). Excellent day of drilling this...thank you.
@TheAce22716 We do that sometimes, but for the initial drill we want to keep it simple. It is also good to force guys to use support side with your technique. When they master this, make everyone shoot with one hand.....
Great vid & production! Looks like LH fingers came close to being covered by muzzle at #5 hole. May just be camera angle. But obviously he had the safety on. Good work
@VideoGameBandit I think if you could just make the bottom half of the barricade you would be set. This would allow you to work on the most difficult positions. Kyle
Ryan I would imagine they mean Immediate Action and Remedial Action Malfunctions. Immediate being addressed with SPORTS and Remedial addressed with more intense clearance procedures. Kyle
@blackriflex39 Yes. Up close u'll hit several inches toward the barrel. If you shoot at 3 yards under a car with ur rifle laid to the right ur bullet will impact left of the dot. At distance, u will hit approx 8 inches at a 45 degree angle low and to the side of ur sights. In other words, if the weapon is laid to the right, you will hit low and to the right. For all of these you should go to the range and see for yourself, everyone is slightly different. I use a 50 yd zero as well. Kyle
Great Drill, can see some our authorized "carry" patrol people praticing with this method. Wanted to ask the size of the stell target you are using, possibly ody or the smaller plate ?
I'll give it a try, but I'll be sure to have a buddy around in case I can't get back up. Perhaps future editions of your book should include it?? A man at the local gun club made your barrier.... I'll give it a try next time. Thanks again.
Just built one of these for my gun club. Got to test it out today and we're going to make the IDPA guys run the 9-hole drill at the next match. I have no doubt they're going to love to hate it!
@dreamz0ne Try this, get your sights aligned with the weapon in the normal position, then roll down into the awkward position while looking at the sights the entire time. Do this a couple times and it should become more natural. Let me know if this works for you. Kyle
DN If I am moving I always attempt to get the weapon on safe, if you are just moving from one hole to the next sometimes there is not enough time. If you have to change positions then definitely. Kyle
Are you manipulating the saftey after every shot, as you transition from hole to hole? Or are you leaving it off safe after firing the first shot? Thanks, Danny
@TheHossUSMC Me too, and that is not what we are teaching here, we are teaching obscure shooting positions. If we have a car to shoot under we shoot under it, a drain hole in a parapet we shoot through it, (I actually put my muzzle in that hole so I don’t shoot concrete). If the bad guy will see my muzzle I don’t expose it. Kyle
@USpatriot741776 We have a PDF of the barricade plans we can email you. Please go to our website and drop us an email with a reference to You tube. Thanks Kyle
@silvermediastudio Prone is better, but what if you can’t go prone? Better to practice now, around vehicles this is quicker than prone. Even with the IOTV. Try bottom to top and top to bottom and see what time is faster. I prefer to use gravity...LOL Kyle
SGM, Is it correct to engage the safety on the rifle when transitioning between each port? My personal practice is to engage the safety only when entering and leaving the barricade as a whole. This is due to the fact that I frequently practice with weapons that do not always have an external safety or that may be foreign or unusual weapons. Proper indexing of the trigger finger has always been sufficient to avoid a negligent discharge when transitioning from port to port.
Why the bent-over position instead of going prone? Seems a bit awkward, and downright impossible if you were wearing full IOTV with groin protector. Also, I imagine it would be faster to start at the bottom and work your way up.
Kyle I would love to build one of those barricades but there is no way I'll be able to fit something like that in the trunk of my sedan. Have you ever seen an alternative barricade design that is more compact but allows similar skill development?
SGM , is there a height over bore issue with the EO tech when it is turned on it's side like that ? I guess what I am asking is how do you compensate for it ?
CSM, I wonder how this drill changes for those of us who have to wear IBA or IOTV and oodles of gear and simply cannot get that close to the ground. I've never seen a prone position quite like that for the last three shots... I suppose that position was designed for those who wear body armor, but it still looks very difficult. I love your sling I got at 21st a while back! Thanks for the vids. --MDB from LF
@8s8lw8d Thanks for the feedback. I am pushing just enough through to clear the muzzle or get support on the free float tube. If this was a window I would not stick my weapon through that, but for this drill we are trying to get shooters to get some support if possible. If I stay back there is also a chance I will shoot the barricade. The view is the same for a bad guy at 200 yards whether I am in the slot or back a foot, no depth perception so might as well have support for the weapon. Kyle
Shouldn't he be switching to his support side so he maintains his cover? If someone was firing back he could potentially get hit sticking out like that.
Bigwater The steel is the VTAC BCCZone from MGM Targets. As shooters become more advanced we will make them use the small plates. You can also move the targets closer or farther depending on the skill level. Hope you like the videos. Kyle
Only change I would make to this drill is require that the shooter stay behind cover. Increases the difficulty by making them shoot offhanded on the far left holes.
Kyle, Thank you for posting such interesting and innovative training videos. I was wondering where to get a barricade like this and the one in Highsmith drills. And why don't we shoot moving backwards? Thank you. JAWS
Love drills like that, but if i may make a suggestion: Try practicing with the Shooter staying concealed behind the cover of the barricade. Anyone can shoot through the hole. To me, the idea is to fire the shots from concealment. Just a thought.
I watched this video 12 years ago when it came out I was in college back then and it changed the way I shoot and I’ve gotten so much better over the years. I have to cut one out for my nephew his mom finally let him get a gun 💪🏿
runexwalsh that's what I thought the whole purpose of barricade training was was to actually be protected by the barricade. Glad someone else noticed that
Anyone can shoot out of 9 holes with open movement. The whole idea is to make the best use of the limited space given, and try to position your body to get to the difficult holes.
Question, I have asked and looked for this answer, I know each cut out of the VTAC target is an actual shape of something you would see in real life, I guess what I'm asking is what was the thought process behind each shape, what are they trying to simulate?
It's assuming you're in a bad shooting position where you need to be able to take a shot, perhaps, through a small gap in a wall, fence, barrier. Perhaps through even through a hole in the wall. It's testing your ability to adapt and overcome the challenges of being in a situation where maintaining a perfect stance and sight alignment is impossible. But you must make due given the circumstances. A professional doesn't train for best case scenario, they train for worst case scenario.
I realize this, I was wondering what pieces of architecture the slots were modeled after, I would doubt he just cut a bunch of random holes/ports...or maybe that's exactly what he did haha
Kyle answered that one. Here you go. At distance u will hit approx 8 inches at a 45 degree angle low and to the side of your sights. If your weapon is laid to the right you will hit low and to the right.
watching yall play in the mud just makes me wanna shoot. here i am trying to stretch the time i have to leave for work to watch a few more gun / training vids. o well, today is payday, so il be playing in the dirt soon enough.
Matt Put all your gear on and try it out, I think you will be surprised at how well it works. We use that position just because of the gear, hope you have fun standing on your head. LOL Kyle
He is using the barricade as a brace for his rifle, several issue with this. #1. Muzzle breaking the plane of his cover, exposing his rifle and giving away his position, also makes quick movement from point A to B more difficult because you have to clear your rifle before moving which slows you down. #2. Using the barricade as a brace also keeps you from being a better shooter. If you are ever in a situation where you need to shoot through small holes you likely wont have anywhere to place your barrel for support, so this habit hurts your progression as a shooter. #3. He is too close to his cover, increasing the likelihood of injury from return fire and also slowing down his ability to move from A to B.
The point of this drill is to shoot without muzzle resting on the opening, being able to support your gun up on your own plus hide the muzzle and flash and be able to aim and shoot without damaging the wood. Successfully completing this drill demonstrates you can "safely" contol your gun while taking difficult shots and this video shows none of it, piss poor and sad. Shame on you for making it!
Kyle. I just returned from Afghanistan and I made my entire battalion shoot at least once per week. Shot this drill for the first time this weekend. I was slow and awkward...but it was great practice!! Thanks!!
What size of steel target are you shooting at, at 100yrds?
Great point about the safety manipulation. During some training I did with Jim Smith he had us going to safe between all reloads as well.
Pure mastery! Check out how Mr. Lamb works his safety as he works through the drill. AWESOME!

@scdefion The issue is fixed with aiming slightly high to the magazine side at 100 yards, more distance more hold.

@AlexPetersen1 It would be degrading to your accuracy. This is especially true if you touch the light against anything.

is there any diffrences in impact when shoooting with the gun sideways? i read the eo tech question but didnt fully understand... thanks.
Where do I find the templet for the barracade? I'd like to make one.

Great tip, thats the whole point of practicing with cover. To actually use it as cover.
and good clean fun like this is why I subscribed. Thanks for putting these out.
Wouldn't it be easier to go prone for those last few shots? Instead of being completely sideways
I’ve seen other instructors( USSF) stress not sticking the barrel through the openings as to better conceal your position. Your thoughts?
yes you're right, it improves concealment and requires more skill.
Just sayng but is he suppose to exposing part of his body?
i just noticed you seem to be engageing the saftey while moveing the gun from hole to hole..
