Love this game so much. I remember feeling nervous about asking for this one when I was a kid because all the advertising for it was like "this game will literally invite Satan into your house and he's gonna leave NO juice in the fridge." Wish there was more of the castle building in the series.
Always loved how it taught you right off the bat about how the rules go. If I remember right, finding the combinations for new enemies was a pain but ultimately satisfying. This game was one of the only ones where I used the "notes" pages in the manual.
The most notable thing about this game was that it was capable of being used in Monster Rancher 1 for a secret monster. If you unlocked the Magic/Majin monster then used this game disk at the shrine, you would get a secret Magic who looked exactly like Ardebaran.
One of my favorite games of all time. I remember hiding what the game was about from my friends Mom when we played there because she would've flipped out. Such a gem, I recently ran it in HD with high textures and it's even more amazing. Set up modern dual joystick with it too, it's nice. Thanks for showcasing this.
Yea I've been playing it using Retroarch and I've turned on an HD shader and also scaled up the resolution x4. It looks amazing amd plays smooth. I remember seeing my brother in law play this for the first time in the 90s and being blown away you didn't need a computer for something like this lol.
Ah memories, such an interesting gem of a game. At the time any 3D game was pretty much hack and slash. This one let you build up your castle to confuse your enemies and lay traps around. It was a unique feeling knowing the layout and setting a plan in motion.
I wish they remade this. Such a novel concept back then and I think even now. You play as the villain, entice people to enter your mansion, and then proceed to enact pain on them.
I heard about this game back in the day and always wanted to play it but never found it anywhere. Apparently I really missed out because this kind of bizarre, over-developed gameplay is exactly the kind of thing I like(d).
I just remember not understanding what the hell was going on and being in love with that lmao. What I miss most about video games is the era when no one knew what the devs were gonna try next
Considering the conversation between Jin and Scuba in the beginning, you would think Jin's Wisdom would be 2 to Scuba's 3, or Jin/Scuba 1/2... But, they're both 2.
I got this around the same time as Resident Evil in '96, and I've always felt that the opening had great CG for its time. RE was a "triple A" title, and it was more than on par with the cut scenes in that.
None of the others in the series have a stamp in my memory like this one. The chaining together of traps really evolved with this series but this was such an awesome experience as a kid. All these kids know today is Fortnite and mommy and daddy's credit card. We really grew up in the golden age of gaming.
I love how, despite them trying to kill you, you can still trade with the merchants, and they don't even sound hostile when you talk to them. Also, why couldn't you collect the bodies of Jonathan and Patricia at 5:16:50? You could carry two more, and since they were generic invaders they shouldn't have any immunities. Does the game no longer let you take them if they can't be used to create any of the remaining monsters?
love this game, played so many hours when I was a kid and finished this every way possible, ressurecting the devil, suiciding to be part of astarte, killing her, using fiana as a demon, throwing her away, combining shitloads of corpses trying to get different monsters XD I took pleasure every single time I tortured Yurias and the magician
FUN game! i was so into the series, i think Kagero 2 was best. forget if i ever played deception 3 on the ps1...i know i tried the ps2 version, illusion and the on the ps4 another one...but i'll always remember this one and kagero 2
The better place to put tramps is (absurdly) the entrance, between the pilars and the walls, you basically go around the columns , then the intruders see you between the column and they can't avoid the spikes or the pit; something that they CAN avoid in open fields. As the game represents the pillars as wide prisms, they can be used to your advantage when they try to surround them, it takes them a long time especially if they are damaged. I say absurdly because if the initial place is the more favorable place for put tramps (the only exception is the upper Med Hall, but is basically the same type of room), the rest of the castle become useless.
If my memory is correct, one of the endings for the second game that the main character fell in love with her brother after she left the mansion and implied they ended up having a child. Weird game but fun.
Back in the old school Tecmo days, way before the Koei acquisition. Not like say, early Rygar era, but old enough where alot of people watching this werent even a thought. Strange.
OH MY! This was *Devil's Deception!* (in my country) I loved this game, even if it was too depressing for me (I never want to play as the bad guy). I like the idea and I remember I find both sad and romantic that you can make your princess one of your monsters, when she die (romantic, because you find a way to keep her "alive" and stay together). Also, multiple endings, made by your own choices were super rare in the games I owned. The only one thing I totally DIDN'T like about this game: you didn't have enough time/days to build your castle and your army, before the last chapter. The game was super slow and half of the length are loading screens, but the "missions" were over before you can start to have fun with your loots.
You get a pass… It wasn’t the biggest twist like YOU were in fact the the bad guy who committed unspeakable crimes but got amnesia, lived a life on the straight and narrow, said acts faded into obscurity, then you suddenly REMEMBERED… Or, you could have been DEAD all along…
LOL at the "good ending." (There are no good endings in the series and they get darker later on.) It was either this or the second game where one of your first missions involved killing a family of adventurers looking for a cure for their kid and afterwards after killing them you are shown footage of the kid suffering alone. Hardcore. :)
If I had this as a kid, I would have been so entranced in building my own castle. It’s a shame it doesn’t have a lot of heat on the bone, and gold is better spent on expensive trap development.
Ok, I admit I never reached THIS ending. She died all the times, I didn't even speak english, at the time and there were no translations or guides to solve the game. So I just thought she was meant to die as part of the story. But I find this ending kinda a joke, like: "You killed a lot of innocent good people and left a kingdom without guide. You know what would fix it? Let's go somewhere else and help random people that are NOT the families, friends, or lovers of the one you just brutally murdered". That doesn't sound fair enough.
The whole kingdom betrayed him, lol. You want him to save the same kingdom that already labelled him as guilty without even a proper trial? He pacted with the devil in the first place because of these shitty people. They are no longer his responsibility after all they did to him.
I played this game on a demo when I was 13 with my best friend. I couldn't remember the name just how it was played. 25 years later I finally found it thanks to friggin AI ha
You can just picture the beauty of this game, seeing all the wall patterns around the castle... It's too bad they don't remake this game, using the Unreal Engine, to make the castle, and all the people invading it hyper realistic.
On the results screen the symphonic music with the vocals sounds like floor Jansen from nightwish. It was my first ps game. I spend hole nights playing it. I still have it. Old games was waaay better
Loved this game since day one. Had to buy a new memory card since the save file is so huge. Played it countless hours and still revisit it every year or two. I'm too familiar to watch someone else play this game for a session. My only question is did you lure the alien?
I was scared of this game as a kid and i played resident evil before this, I Had no idea wth it was or even what I was supposed to be doing i was probably like 8 or 9 maybe, I think my dad must have picked it up from a pawn shop because I definitely don't remember picking this out or even knowing anything about it I would just run around until I died I may have trapped someone before but never stuck with it long enough so was always half confused and then id put mgs1 back in kinda wish i still had it though its prlly worth money, to this day i still don't personally know anyone that's seen heard or played this not then not now
I wish they remade it, but nowadays some remakes are shit... It probably won't be as scary as the original due to modernization. I hate this new era, people gone soft..
As one who usually takes the role of those "invaders"(usually as wizard zamur) and go into dungeons or evil lairs to plunder its treasure this game is not what is usually like....if you truly were the master of the castle you would know how to fight and destroy those adventurers effortesly and your whole castle would be filled with monsters not just traps....and really not meeting the adventurers in person and running around baiting for traps to get them....the adventurers have more loot then the "master" of the castle lol
Dude playing this is frustratingly slow triggering his traps... I kept finding myself yelling "NOW! NOW!" Only for the target to move past the trap. Edit: I take that back, dude isn't just slow on the draw he F-ing sucks at this game.
I guess you can fix my issue with this game series with emulation save states... My experience with D4 on Vita: Given this game is a "trial and error" experimental type of gameplay + how long this takes to load the level upon a "Retry" on PS Vita - it's so punishing if you want to experiment to get the challenges done. I can't do. Because it's Japanese style game, expect pointless unskippable animations when introducing the enemies at level start, VN style garbage in between levels and endless load times on PSVita. I wanted to like it, but my time is valuable and this game on Vita does not respect it. Really - this game should be programmed such that doing a "Retry" from the currentl level should be an instant restart. Compare this to Hotline Miami - when you die and need to retry, it boots you to the level start instantly, wasting none of your precious time.
Love this game so much. I remember feeling nervous about asking for this one when I was a kid because all the advertising for it was like "this game will literally invite Satan into your house and he's gonna leave NO juice in the fridge." Wish there was more of the castle building in the series.
