Hi! That pink Asian inspired dress with hearts is designed based on Qipao. As a Chinese, I don't think it is cultural appropriation. There is nothing offensive there, since Qipao is not related to religion, nor has any historical significance. It was just a kind of daily outfit that Chinese women used to wear during about 30s to 50s. It is still worn in mainland China now on special occasions, such as weddings, fancy celebrations, or by workers in the service industry like restaurants. The dress in the video is not a classic design, nor has a standard cut, so it is just a cute, unique "Qipao inspired dress". And there is no copyright of Qipao design. You do not need to collab with a Chinese designer to make a Qipao inspired dress. In fact, back then, women liked to add some western elements to their Qipao to express themselves. On the other hand, It is not cultural appreciation either, since there is no need to "worship" it or give special treatment to it if you want to wear it. In fact, Chinese people would feel flattered if a western brand gets inspiration from Chinese culture and add Chinese elements to their design. However, I am aware that cultural appropriation is a big, nasty, risky thing in the US, so it is highly likely that you got roasted (ironically NOT by Chinese people) if you wear that dress. But if you ever have a chance to visit China or any other Asian country, you can definitely wear it with full confidence. People there would love you and appreciate your fashion choice

i have a question! so this dress is a no-go because ovbs lazy oaf isn't asian owned so in designing it they appropriated the qi pao silhouette, and that i get. but for example, if i get an original qi pao from china or from a chinese seller (or a sari, or an african dress, or even a dirndl for example) does that read as cultural appropriation too? for example my mam was gifted an indian dress by an indian friend of hers and i always wear it and get so many compliments, not just by white people! granted where i live the notion of cultural appropriation isn't really widespread and of course it's not my intention to ever offend anyone but i do really love having clothes from different parts of the world and i am careful to research the history of the garment beforehand (like, i would never wear something that is considered sacred/taboo. but i feelike folk dress should be fair game?) i genuinely want to hear different perspectives on this!

If the garment is worn by the people of the culture it comes from casually, than it may be okay for you to wear it casually (although I think it's still case by case) whereas the problem sometimes with cultural appropriation is wearing a garment that is for a certain holiday or important event in a casual setting because it could be disrespectful. some cultures are also more closed off in their practices than others, so that's something to consider also! if the dress you're talking about is a gift, I would just make sure to be respectful by learning about it and when it may or may not be appropriate to wear it

I watched a talk on cultural appreciation vs. appropriation and what it comes down to is whether the brand actually worked with the people and their culture in creating the design and the garment. If they didn't then it's appropriation so yeah, that's highly likely to go on the appropriation side

I’m Chinese and that Lazy Oaf “qipao” style dress is SOO cute. But like other comments are saying I doubt the designers collaborated with Chinese artists to create it and may or may not have factories in China that exploit their workers. The origins of the dress are likely not in the “right place” but the dress design itself is not offensive to me. As long as you don’t claim it to be “true traditional Chinese wear” when it’s not or “cuter than actual Chinese clothing” I think it’s fine. That’s just my opinion though as one Chinese American girl on the internet lol

i have a question! so this dress is a no-go because ovbs lazy oaf isn't asian owned so in designing it they appropriated the qi pao silhouette, and that i get. but for example, if i get an original qi pao from china or from a chinese seller (or a sari, or an african dress, or even a dirndl for example) does that read as cultural appropriation too? for example my mam was gifted an indian dress by an indian friend of hers and i always wear it and get so many compliments, not just by white people! granted where i live the notion of cultural appropriation isn't really widespread and of course it's not my intention to ever offend anyone but i do really love having clothes from different parts of the world and i am careful to research the history of the garment beforehand (like, i would never wear something that is considered sacred/taboo. but i feelike folk dress should be fair game?) i genuinely want to hear different perspectives on this!
@@diinalens my two best friends in high school were from Shanghai, and they always wanted to dress me up in their traditional dress and gifted me one. So from my personal experience it's okay.

If the garment is worn by the people of the culture it comes from casually, than it may be okay for you to wear it casually (although I think it's still case by case) whereas the problem sometimes with cultural appropriation is wearing a garment that is for a certain holiday or important event in a casual setting because it could be disrespectful. some cultures are also more closed off in their practices than others, so that's something to consider also! if the dress you're talking about is a gift, I would just make sure to be respectful by learning about it and when it may or may not be appropriate to wear it

I’m Chinese and that Lazy Oaf “qipao” style dress is SOO cute. But like other comments are saying I doubt the designers collaborated with Chinese artists to create it and may or may not have factories in China that exploit their workers. The origins of the dress are likely not in the “right place” but the dress design itself is not offensive to me. As long as you don’t claim it to be “true traditional Chinese wear” when it’s not or “cuter than actual Chinese clothing” I think it’s fine. That’s just my opinion though as one Chinese American girl on the internet lol
