I'm not gonna lie, I just randomly discovered this band a few weeks ago and started going through their entire catalog. I find they're one of those bands where I have to listen to some of their songs a few times before getting into it, but man..once I do start to get into it, I'm hooked. This is one of those songs I noticed was extremely popular through some reading and couldn't understand fully why until now. It really is a masterpiece. I was just driving into Providence on this beautiful spring day, blasting this the whole way, and I believe I might've had what some a call a spiritual experience. I've been numb from heroin for the past decade + and I'm about to celebrate 5 months sober, so music just hits me on a whole new level these days now that I have a brand new perspective on life. Even during these wild, sad times, there's a lot to be appreciative and grateful for. Anyway, thank you to the TH-cam Algorithm Gods for helping me find these dudes.

That's what I really like about Will's lyrics. None of them are really all that deeply meaningful but at the same time, he sings them exactly how they are for him.
I can never decide whether I like that line or "Thank God for the little things and / fuck God that they're little things I'm / running out of prayers to sing" from the original version better. Will is such a talented lyricist.
This where the longest 13 minutes of my life, and for the most part i couldn't get a word of what he was saying, but i could felt it, it resonated with me on a deeper level, where language was not imporntant, and it moved me to the point where im crying writting this.

wait was that not there before? That's 100% one of my favorite parts
originally i didn't like this new one, cos i thought it sounded rlly empty, but on re-listening to it i feel like it's just very distant from the subject matter, which changes the tone a lot. the first was really involved and overwhelming and gives you the sensation of being swept up in the action/emotions, and this is more like looking back on a memory with a different perspective.
i get you but to me it's fun to have this different perspective on the same song.

i get you on this, but that's the point of the re-recording, for will to express his retrospective on the relationship in a more rational manner (im pretty sure you know that though). i personally prefer this version because you can hear the instrumentation more -and the frank ocean reference- but I also think both recordings are necessary for the full experience. like i prefer the 2011 cute thing more so i get wanting something more raw.

Will felt that Cate's characters were an extension of herself that showed that she was basically exactly like him. This is where the metaphor of "twins" comes in.
This line first of all highlights Will fear of being replaced as Cate's "brother," but what's also important is that "satanist with braces and one capital o" describes Moya (one of Cate's characters). Will sees Moya as Cate's "brother" bc he thinks they're exactly alike.

If Cate sounds like a girl’s name, that’s because it is. Basically, (if I’m not wrong), Cate started to question her gender, while Will didn’t. This shattered the notion that Will actually was exactly the same as Cate (it broke the mirror). It also put question into whether Cate was actually depressed because she was hit as a child and didn’t remember it (the final terror is in your house somewhere hiding in boxes behind closed doorways/ you galvanistic young man)
