I remember logging in every week to see the weekly, always trying to get them done, it personally made the game more fun, and encouraged people to play the RROs more. Ye they removed all my favorite games which just made it a boring gameplay for me, but not only talking for myself I’m talking for the creators as they worked on a map for ppl to play with and have fun just for it to one day just end up in the void of forgotten things then when newer players join those fun games become forgotten bc all the of players of recroom that played those games leave bc life gets in the way, same happened for me but I still remember those games all the games now aren’t as fun but I do have a reasonable explanation and its that where getting older and our perspective of things change overtime and we mature so maybe it’s that or maybe their just changing it for the generations that we have today if that’s the case just tell the children today about the past and they might be amazed by the way it was back then and I was also told don’t reflect on the past instead look up to what we have now so I’m going with that as what we have today might be even worse later or it might be better idk but still enjoy what we have today
Their target demographic has the lowest possible standards: Children on the lowest barrier-to-entry devices. I'm equally surprised at all the kidslop on TH-cam that gets millions of views. RR is eating up that audience as well.

It's a shame they don't consult Video Partners first - we know our communities best. You stream these weekly which is a huge part of your content. To just take it away without consulting us is a shame. In addition, they took away so many programs for creators and there doesn't seem to be a game plan to bring them back. I will always love Rec Room but I wish they would throw a bone to the people who have played the game for years and years and made it what it is today.

As someone who has been playing Rec Room for a while, it really hurts to see a game I love losing the assets that we as a community used to hold close to our hearts. Personally, I miss going on Rec Room every day with my friends. Now, we barely play, and it's sad that our only conversations revolve around "remember that time in Rec Room?". I wish the best for Rec Room and hope that it will soon regain the former glory it held for us.

Totally agree with your points man. ill be real I almost quit doing TH-cam this year (and kinda last year) and its not all rec rooms fault of course but my decline in views and the direction the game has taken has really demotivated me to continue this as a hobby/personal business feeling more like a chore. But I'm just in a similar boat to you and I'm kind lost on where to go from here, that is if there is a future for OreoVR. Rec room needs to start making RR-Originals again like they did 4-6 years ago
For real, like the last good Rec Room Originals they made was StuntRunner (at least in my opinion). And sure Showdown and MakeItToMidnight were also top tier RROs but those died down in popularity after like a month. StuntRunner on the other hand is a lot more fun being that it has a better aspect of racing and doing parkour at the same time.

I remember when I fell in love with the community as a screenmode, went and bought a used Oculus Rift CV1, and then dropped 2k hours on Rec Room. Much of it was spent on completing dailies and weekly challenges with friends😢... sad to see them go.
I started playing in february 2023 and I fell in love reached level 50 in december 2023 and took some time off cuz I was burnt out then I bought a oculus in december and started playing a lot of vr and still do but I made a separate vr account and I’m having fun with golden trophy now.
We need more people to speak out about the problems with Rec Room. I feel like not enough people speak out on the issues so they just don’t care. We complain not out of hate but out of love for the game we want to do better.

TRY BEING ME BRUH EVER SINCE JANUARY 1ST ITS BEEN HORRIBLE FOR ME
From the lack of content updates, to the increase in rec rooms item inflation, removal of weekly challenges, no new creator contests (its been literally 1 year), its hard to see the game going through all this. The last major content update was 9 months ago, a game cant go that long with out anything new, plus the fact they are removing a core element of what made playing the games rros fun (that being weeklies). Rec Rooms becoming to reliant on the players, spending their money, and making player created rooms to hinder to rec rooms overall engagement.

at this point i just check the discord every now and then to see what beloved feature has been removed and almost every time i check the devs have removed something people liked
and its always half assed too, like that "fix" for infinite shooting not only removing double shooting but didnt even fix infinite shooting and just made it a slight inconvenience
As a paintball player this constant bug of pvp going off is super annoying because then I can’t play. Also another bug was playing in clearcut and having the game randomly crash and stop with no results which annoys me because I like to record my progress of my paintball hits. 1 other bug I have just noticed, similar to rooms breaking, is when I play in rooms other than RROs, players avatars will break for no reason I know of. Those are just a couple of annoying bugs I know 😅.

I'm completely in the same boat, I used to play up until I was about 15 in 2022. it's the only game I have such old cosmetics for, and it's genuinely kind of sad to watch such a nostalgic game like this run by a company like this.

Man. I remember starting Rec Room and how excited I was leading up to being able to play it. I watched videos of people playing paintball, paddleball , what have you. When my birthday came around and I finally got the PS Move controllers for the original PSVR, I immediately downloaded Rec room and was greeted with a big loading screen which showed me a new quest that had been recently released: Isle of the Lost Skulls.
I remember when this game always kept me on my toes. Each update was such a game changer. If it wasn't an original, it was something that greatly benefitted the creators of custom games and, in turn, the players. If it wasn't an update for the creators, it was an original. I vividly remember playing the Rec Royale beta and making some online friends that I would play with for years in that mode. I even remember enjoying some modes that flew under the radar like Bowling. Even if they weren't always top tier, I respected the devs because they experimented heavily. Sometimes, they would do it to great success. Things like the new lobby, Spring Cleaning and the aforementioned Rec Royale created tangible ripples throughout the community that could be felt for weeks or even months. Weeklys were something that kept me coming back to this game as it rendered it something other than just a social platform like VRChat. The challenges used to incorporate the new originals they released into their requirements in order to get cool or interesting skins. Even if you didn't like a skin, oh well, there was always going to be another one next week.
The community was great. Even if it had its share of toxicity and children, most of the people who played the game were just there to have a good time, and that could be felt in the general atmosphere of the game. You can really feel it when both the developers AND the players care about the game they're enjoying. I haven't really experienced a similar feeling in another game since. I remember when I loved this game so much that it encouraged me to read Ready Player One after finding it in a costco book bin. I loved that book so much that, coinciding with the movies release, I changed my ingame name to the main characters OASIS name in the book: Parzival. After that I ended up becoming good friends with people that also named themselves names from the movie. I grew particularly close with someone who named themselves Shoto.
This game was so much fun in every aspect and seeing it get butchered like this is pretty heartbreaking to me, as cheesy as that sounds. I would have genuinely preferred if this game just burnt out or went out in some blaze of glory rather than get warped like this. Its really sad to see it get neglected and for the once fiery, ambitious developers to just regress into corporate, out of touch sleazebags while still pretending to be an indie studio with indie problems.
I'm not sure what my point in saying all of this is. This video reminded me of all the fun I had with Rec Room and I guess I just wanted to reminisce in the hopes that someone else feels the same way I do.
RIP Rec Room. I won't forget what you used to be.

Exactly, I remember a couple of months ago I went into the rec room discord to try to find a solution with double shotting since it was such a big part of the community. However I was just disrespected and completely cussed out because the games “focus” isn’t on a glitch.

I miss Rec Room sometimes, I haven’t touched my headset in months, it’s just collecting dust in the corner, before I used it all the time with my old friend group and RR was really the thing holding us together, I used to play all the time and now, I lost those two as friends, RR went downhill, I think it started with that science stuff, that lost a lot of people’s interest. I haven’t played in so long, wish things could go back to how they used to be, just dumb fun with friends and not having to worry about the 10,000 token prices and all that junk.

- I totally agree with your opinion on taking away weeklies.
- I think Full Body Avatars are alright. It’s just the fact that it gives your character a nose when you turn FBA on. But you can just easily remove the nose from your avatar.
- You are definitely right about needing a new quest. Although we technically did get a “new Rec Room Original Quest” it doesn’t have the same vibe the other quests do. We, the community, were giving the dev team ideas on what the next quest should be. But they were just refusing to even use their ideas.

I started playing rec room around 3 years ago, and stopped one year ago. I just have 3 reasons why, it’s impossible to get tokens, after playing for 3 years I’ve only saved up enough for two items. I quit for around a month after that, and when I came back the weekly wasn’t in my dorm and I thought that they just got rid of it. (I don’t know when they changed it but I think somewhere around that time.) and the last straw wasn’t a really big one, but annoyed me so much. We never got the community board or crescendo. that still haunts me to this day. I feel like all of the games are dying now.
2020-2022 was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in VR, it was the thing I was doing when I was locked in my house because so many people got into vr and rec room, and when the pandemic ended it felt like the game was hollowed out and going back to play it felt like going into a ghost town

As you're still one of the community's biggest voices, I really thank you for being brave enough to post this video, especially considering your partnership with Rec Room. Your approach of ''I want them to succeed but man does it feel like they're going down right now'' is a mindset I've personally had for a while, I want to see them do better but at this point it's almost impossible to not complain about the state of the game. As someone who's been playing on the RRO side of the game for years (Rec Royale mainly with a side of LT), Rec Room has genuinely started to feel so soulless and I fear we're getting to a point where they might even consider closing things like the Sponsored League Programme.
Just wanted to dump some of my thoughts on all of the (very well constructed) points you made in this video:
Weekly Challenges
I'll basically repeat what I said over on the Rec Room Discord server and r/recroom, but the weekly challenge's reasons for being cancelled feel like a misuse of that statistic. They are implying only 0.2% of players care about the weekly challenges, however I would argue it is because the concurrent playerbase either:
- Already owns the skin being released
- Is unaware of the weekly challenge being a feature (for the reasons you mentioned)
The removal of weekly challenges feels like a turning point for Rec Room, marking RRO content truly as a niche and low priority. We fell in love with Rec Room because it offered such a unique experience in a social game in comparison to the likes of Roblox. To see it moving in the same direction as Roblox is understandable but very depressing as a longer time player.
(also I loathe the idea of UGC skins, can't wait for everyone to be making fake gold skins instead of being creative)
Game-Breaking Bugs
We all know Rec Room is no stranger to game breaking bugs becoming a long term "feature". Whether it was the Teleport Animation Reset (T.A.R) and slowness bug making 2021 a very painful year for PvP players, the official Reclympics maps having game breaking bugs with no replay (cut to me losing in archery because the pots began to fall) or the hundreds of bugs you'll experience in the average dodgeball session, it's hard to want to support Rec Room when the game hardly works. There used to be a pretty big meme among the competitive community that our RROs wouldn't get fixes because only the Makerpen made them money, however now even the Makerpen feels impossible to use.
Performance (+ The Streamer Cam)
There's been some work on fixing the performance of Rec Room, but quite frankly it is ridiculous how bad the performance gets. I personally play on a Valve Index with a Ryzen 7-7700 CPU and 4070 GPU, a PC capable of running pretty much anything on max graphical settings and even my PC falls to below 60 fps when trying to play Rec Royale with a streamer camera activated. The standalone headset performance is shocking, with the game struggling to even reach 30 fps. Literally everything is Rec Room feels poorly optimised, with even a big friends list able to freeze the game when opening the watch. I could go on for pages about the performance, it is Rec Room's biggest failure as what should be an entry level VR game, when considering a low frame rate can directly cause motion sickness and discomfort.
Token Inflation
To keep this section shorter, I would just like to point out that the entire TMNT crossover would cost over $400 USD (each turtle is somewhere in the ballpark of $50) to purchase. That's all, make of that what you will.
don't even make me start. The watch menu has just been getting worse and worse for me it's so unoptimized and was made for screen, game breaking bugs people want fixed dont get fixed for 3 weeks +, game is really creator focused because creators make rr money a bit and creators get payed a small cut of what they make for rr, it feels like every update is tested on screen mode because it feels like vr is broken one way or another every update, the very horrible response times from devs and keeping promises is atrocious, the horrible advertisement for actual good things like RRO'S and WEEKLIES, and the HORRIBLE prices for cosmetics i remember when the most expensive item was the unicorn horn and the average token price per item was around 2.5-3k with some exceptions but now it feels dreadful looking at the store wether it be $70+ dollar bundles, etc this is all my yapping for now i just woke up and this yapp gave me a headache
man I really hope this game doesn't die out, this game has been like a core memory for me, its just disappointing to see things die out when it had so much potential

I was a rec room creator since 2019. The team has made so many decisions i can only describe as aberrant. They no longer make a VR game, just a mobile game not dissimilar to Roblox. The new trailers show no VR footage at all.

I used to be excited to play Rec Room after a long day. It breaks my heart to see them treat their community this way
I remember when I would be playing this game a few years ago. I would always try to play a quest with you. One day, I finally did. I ended up meeting a really good friend on the game. We were friends for quite a while. Anyways, numerous baffling decisions from Rec Room devs later, we now both never play this game or really even talk to each other. It's sad how hard they're just kinda fumbling this game.
I was a rec room creator. Since the beginning of my journey as a creator I knew it was hard. Now I remember when the featured rooms where so difficult to find in the watch making little creators who send their rooms to featured where getting no more than 5k visits in a week. Maybe that sound a lot but before they where getting 10k , 15k a lot more. I left the creative community not because it’s hard to get known not only because of the game breaking bugs but because I feel rec room is making harder to find little creators with talent . And let’s remember they are removing building contest from the game. I’ve felt is hard to be a creator in this game but there is always that spark to continue but now I feel no motivation to create anything. I hope rec room as an amazing game it is. Remember who we are and what the rec room community really wants. Removing the unique things of this game is making it another Roblox. How rec room was , it’s just memorable.
I know most people won’t see this or it won’t matter to them.
I was a constant player of Rec room for about 2 years. I stopped about a year in a half ago by this point because one of my quest 2 controllers had an insane amount of stick drift. I’m not good with messing with electronics, and fixing/getting a new one was to expensive.
The reason I bring this up is the amount of time I have spent building my room, which I have over a dozen hours building as many games I have played in the past that have affected my life in some way.
played from 2017 - 2022 and have logged on 3 times since :/ Sad to see the good stuff go and used to play on the daily. Many people, many friends and many experiences.
Hey man honestly I'm so suprised that this game is still active at all, I used to play with my brother who used to be a great fan of yours. its amazed me that i still have a recroom photo of meeting you randomly in a paintball match probably 4 years ago. I told my brother and he was so jelly.. But he used to play with you on stream back in the day I even think hes got some good High scores on jumbo tron i think its called. its good seeing you man im glad your still here trying ur best

REC Room: just focus on making it easy to snap blocks together in a blank slate world with a starter grass/flowery meadow ground. Building custom world is still very difficult but it’s worth it because this is the ONLY way to get friends to stay and engage. Figuring out how to make world have collecting resources in private worlds while also locking down areas that cannot be destroyed is a must learn skill.
Having watched your videos since 2020 and rec room being my social playground during covid really helps understand what you are saying. The game has been on a downward spiral for a while now (I quit back in 2023 because of getting bored (weekly quests)) the company seems way too focused on becoming a monopoly that they forget about the player base and this is a trend many other companies have followed down resulting in failure. It hurts too see this incredible game go so far from its potential.
I have been a faithful player of recroom since 2017. I was there when wall clipping was difficult, before rec royale, around when the head movement moved your entire body etc. Since the fall of the double shot excalibur and all of the fun things, i started to drift off. There was even a glitch during rec rally when if you had a beer bottle and you hit the ceiling bar your buggy would go flying. Everything that was fun died and all of the new bugs invaded rec room and some of them i enjoyed but most hurt everyone. And i just wish rec room would go back to the good times. I know it is basically impossible, but if only.
I’m sure and hope rec room won’t die. I love it way too much.
I used to play rec room for legit 6 hours a day, I loved my friends and it was fun for the long haul
The issues they spoke about with weekly challenges are entirely caused by them messing with challenges in the first place.
Thank you for making this, I could just feel when the developers started to become more disconnected from the community. Really tragic such an awesome platform feels like its going in the wrong direction. I don't have much hope the folks running RecRoom will make positive changes from this, but a video like this is greatly needed.
Just know that if recroom flops, you always have a finger painter
This isn't the end of Rec Room, this the end of the good community in Rec Room.
The sad thing is that the reward for the last weekly is boots for the full body avatar.
The isle bug was fixed but god dang bro that bug held me and my buddy from getting S rank back for so long we almost quit the goal. And as a player from around 2020, I think I’ve seen back when the game was fun. Great video and I agree on all these points.
I personally find the main problem being that nothing is done really good inside of Rec Room. For example in recent years they started trying to bring more materials for creators however they can’t seem to do this without completely ruining certain aspects of the game that pervious players completely played for. The company behind Rec room is now bigger than ever yet the performance of rec room is worst than ever and just keeps on falling.
Overall even with the new rec room original I can’t seem to find a reason to play this game. Many communities like quest speed running have been completely thrown away by rec room. The best move for players like me are to all together give up and move onto other games because it seems we have no hope.

As an OG player from 2019, I agree with everything you've said here. The main thing about Rec Room is they've changed their game direction so much that it's original players aren't even playing the same, original game they've known and loved. Back then it was about playing a handful of fun games with people created by the team, now the devs have removed many original features to the point that it's killing off the OG fanbase.
Last year I played rec room super much every day. All though the new year ever since full body came out and when I hit like level 46, I looked at it and thought it was disturbing and then I quit and I came back today looking what our community has built up to. I didn’t like it but I still like red room. Rec room is a change of everything that will be in your thoughts. One of my friends died this year a rec room friend so it’s another reason why I QUIT rec room. But I will never forget the good ol rec room. But it could change you never know!
When I started playing Rec Room it was 2020 I bought a new quest 2. Covid made everyone stay inside and I played a ton of Rec Room. Things are just not the same.........
Man, in 2021 me and my friend would play all day on Rec room till we had to sleep, Rec Room weeklies was a huge part of our friendship. But now its gone is just sad. I remember meeting hairymanlegs in 2022 and man were my friends amazed. But, Gorilla tag content, and recroom content is dying out. I dont know where to go on the content creator trail anymore.
I would say rec room died 2 years ago or more because players kept making the same games all over again and I mean "Ignited Games", but it's also the rec room developers not really fixing their game and not giving us an option. Making their UI worse and worse in each update was the worst update I've seen I didn't like the UI, it made my game lag much more, there was too many buttons to find where was weekly, events, Play (games), rec center shortcut, Dorm Room shortcut, and more. I loved the old Rec Room UI where it was so simple, and yes I get it they tried to shorten it, but it didn't work out for me. Now Rec Room isn't really Rec Room anymore. Same thing with other games like Fortnite, Warzone, Call of Duty, and much more. All of the sudden I feel like every game is losing its taste.😞

I had NO idea about the Lost Skulls bug until about a week ago. Me and a couple of friends went through all of Isle, and I was expecting to finally win Isle (I'm not that good at quests). Went we got to Ghostbeard, none of us could hit him at all, and Ghostbeard couldn't even hit US. we spent 10 minutes on him alone trying everything, hitting him with flintlocks, swords, even hitting him with the cannon multiple times because it could've just been our internet. It wasn't. One of my friends said he'll stay for a while and me and the other guy left to do something actually fun. Obviously, he wasn't able to kill Ghostbeard after we left...

I'm sad to look back seeing me have a lot of fun for the first time playing this game and then seeing me now barely touching this game.
Everything said here is very true, Im a creator myself, It has been an absolute hassle trying to work on my rooms, Most of them have been broken, and if i wanna get money i have to go to rooms 2.0 and its an absolute nightmare, Great vid boe for highlighting this serious problem

I feel you Boe, I joined in 2022 and I was only around for about 11 months of weekly’s, when they were every week, but now that their monthly’s and now that’s even gone, and double shot and the prices, it’s sad

Man, I took a break from this game for a while and I wanted to play it, so I did. And I feel like the game is dead now. It takes awhile to get a full game in RR originals and a few games that used to be high in the sky are dead now. It was better back then for sure. I miss those days when everyone was friends and games were popular. I don’t think I will play this game anymore. It was fun while it was.
I enjoy the game a lot actually it’s pretty fun just remember it’s a social game at heart. You just gotta chill sometimes and just socialize with your friends.
Now as someone who has stepped away from rec room for a year and half to 2 years this makes me so sad I had so many fun memories with my freinds staying up super late just sitting in a room chilling and after hearing the current state of the game genuinely makes me cry 😢
Another reason might be to get new players because people who used to play recroom were probably young probably now there older so most OG people have grown up and probably stopped so now recroom is changing so more people will play it just like the other people did back then in 2016…
i think the thing is, is that we are all growing up :( most people who started playing rec room back in 2020 or smth are all now grown up now and have moved on :(
i miss the old days. i started in 2017 and stopped playing like 2021-2022 when all my friend where quitting and life got in to the way and no new content.

I agree with everything you've said. I love playing and making content over Rec Room, but it's getting harder and harder to keep supporting them and their strange choices.
I remember when I used to play Rec Room a bunch. Then I moved to VRChat, stopped playing for a bit, came back, and was just disgusted by everything. I didn't even know the now non-existent "monthly's" were still around, I thought they were gone. I miss the old stand that would show the weekly in the dorm room. I miss it when it was actually fun to play rec room. Now, it's just a bunch of things thrown together to make the game seem "appealing". It's quite sad now that the game has come to this, and I truly wish that It never went down the path it did.

I genuinely stopped playing recroom actively. I started playing long ago looking at the game and I was impressed how smooth and nice the games on vr were and the people. I started playing pvps shortly after that I met you Boe and you literally reached me the double shot on idk 2018 or so. Right after that I was addicted in questing and speedrunning, the weaklys made it great to earn cool skins and especially on Halloween or Christmas when you got special skins that no one after that will have (same with these kinda outfits) and recroom is in the collection way an outfit grind so if you wanna collect stuff it's outfits but when that was taken away so I started leagues. LaserTag League and Rec Royale League and I was pretty good at it, shorty after everything got broken and laggy and was fixed way to late. And then I made tokens because there was nothing else to do and now that's gone too it's to hard to get rooms running. Recroom used to be great and I miss it to be honest (sorry for the long text)
Rec Room was excellent back in its beginning. Nnnb19 and I became friends just from our interest in breaking the quests like Golden Trophy for S-Class gear, which evolved into us trying to speedrun (he was way more devoted, I just tagged along for fun). The tough part about Rec Room is that although it was fun, the devs got away from what was best about it, like catering to the PCVR community, and they started taking a direction where the game started to feel more like Roblox, which catered to kids and teenagers. I think the ultimate downfall started when they introduced the Screen Mode, along with various other fixes that made the game not fun, as well as the addition of in game paid items. Back then, the Watch UI was much simpler and directed you to the games you wanted to play. Nowadays, I go back in and see that it's way harder to find the games they created, while they favor user-made content (which isn't bad in itself, but it ruins the experience they originally released, so it's now nostalgic).
I remember having a conversation with Nnnb a little while ago, when we decided to catch up after we both moved away from the game. At one point, we were contemplating downloading a previous build of the game just to try and play it how it was like in the old days, before it became a cash grab. Rec room was already making decent money I believe, but now it has evolved into a full-blown cash-grab. No longer is the game limited to 13+, its allowing young, impressionable children to witness user created content in virtual reality, which I think goes against my personal beliefs (as they are prone to observing adult, or adult-like content in these user-created instances). But anyways, that's my opinion on the game.
TLDR: The game is not how it used to be, and it sucks to see the devs forsaking the good to replace it with the bad.
