Just wanted to say I love your respect from ‘70s, ‘80s & ‘90s era gymnastics. It was a very different sport. A lot of things have changed for the better since then but I do sometimes fell like modern gym focuses too much on stacking big skills & doesn’t emphasize control, creativity & grace as much as it might. I’d love to see you try some beam mounts from that era! Wouldn’t ask you to try The Phillips-You’d probably have to replace your spine with a noodle to make that one work. Lotta other neat stuff, though. Stay awesome! 🙂
That's my sentiment as well. I find the sport to formulaic now. And you know the only thing to wow you will be a Simone Biles floor routine bc of her height in the air. I miss the Korbut flip and the balletic gracefulness
Whips definitely teach you to get your feet in front. Something interesting: 2:57 It's not a "doppio carpio" (double pike). Kim does a double tuck. She kicks into the tuck with straight legs as a setting technique because it helps her stretch up into the flip, but she does both saltos tucked. No judge would ever consider that a double pike. Pause it and you'll see. I enjoyed the video.
Sophia, don't call me crazy, but I loved the math challenge. Assuming she trained intensively for around 10 years, a typical duration for a competitive gymnastics career and based on your calculations, Kim Zmeskal might have performed between 39,000 to 78,000 whips... anyway I bet she must have had sore muscles countless times with all those whips! Haha! 👻😛😄🤪🤪
Overtraining was a pretty serious issue back then. I don’t believe that the Karolyis ever intended to harm anyone but there was a lot of long term damage. They just had this system they’d been immersed in, they brought it to the US & it produced results…at a price. Honestly there were worse coaches out there. Bela and Marta were harsh, and they didn’t question a lot of things they should have, but some of the big US clubs in the ‘80s, ‘90s & early ‘00s were run by proper sociopaths. Parkettes, based in my home state of Pennsylvania, was one of the worst. I’ve heard rumors that Zmeskal’s coaching style has come under fire. Most of the allegations seem to suggest that she internalized the old Romanian system a little too well.
Love this style/ length of video! ❤❤ Omg I love that triple whip pass! How cool that they have a diving board into the pit! I wanted to dive so badly as a kid but after gymnastics I couldn’t get the head first landing thing and got tired of belly flopping. A pit to learn in would have been amazing 😂😂
Love it!!!! It's such a beautiful tumble to watch. Any progression of this would be compulsive viewing, as would getting other gymnasts to tumble with you and just go for bigger tricks. It's been amazing to see your work ethic in learning new skills, so inspirational, especially when you're out of your comfort zone! I don't think you can go wrong with more bars content. How do some of the older floor routines stack-up against the modern? Could you do all of Lavinia Milosovici's tumbles from her perfect 10 routine? Do the latest sprung floors help significantly? More content please! Higher! Faster! Further!
😂😂 I think it’s surely easier for her to get her body around her center of gravity being shorter! That’s not to take away from the insane amount of work it took her for her to figure this one out consistently! ❤️

When we used to tumble on the rod floor, and we didn’t have enough floor space, we would stand on a wooden block, jump onto a angled mini tramp and hurdle off the mini tramp into whatever pass we were doing. It generated enough power as if you were doing a full run. It kind of shot you forward into your round off. I saw a mini tramp on the video that would work, if you jumped off something slightly higher or the same height. However, I do realize, Kim Zmeskel did not do that pass from a run, so….idk.
I miss the way that gymnastics used to be. I'm not an expert, but I can just tell that the ballet-style, creativity, and daring moves seem to have vanished. The only way to excel is by strength and height in the air on the floor routine. Simone Biles is a powerhouse, but not enjoyable to watch. It's not her fault, but the sport is just become so formulaic.
Ur awesome please pin my comment i am autistic and love your videos im zlso a gymnast and just got my almost ariel if you can please reply sith tips beciase i can al ost do it but only put , yhands down at the end❤😊

I’m old now but, this takes me back… I can close my eyes and feel a whip back…. Such a fun skill! Thanks for the memory!
Seeing the whip on floor routines excites me the most. I find them so beautiful and athletic.
I’d never be able to do it so I will just watch you. You’re AWESOME! ❤

I just love you, Sophia. You have so much fun.
Yay! You did it! 👏👏👏👏🥳🥳 Do you think that her being 4'7" has anything to do with how fast & easy she makes it look? 🤔

Idk why but for some odd reason I think she did like 45000 in her whole career
