I wouldn’t necessarily call it a clone tbh. Despite being made by the same guy, both shows are vastly different from one another In terms of storylines, family dynamics and character traits.
Yeah, I actually genuinely enjoy American Dad because there’s a little less sheer chaos and gross-out gags, as well as the family dynamic being more functional and loving.
@D Snow That's exactly what I thought too. Not to mention it doesn't TOTALLY have the same character tropes as the others. A few a turned around completely, Haley being considered attractive a lot, Steve being a genius, Francine being a sexy housewife, and having TWO weird non-human sidekicks which is clearly the biggest and most valuable change /s. After the first few seasons it really breaks away from the FG shtick and becomes its own (and in my opinion, superior) show.

However, once they realized that Stan's CIA job allows for goofy gadget shenanigans and Roger's characters can carry whole episodes, it really found it's stride. That and the family doesn't hate each other the way the modern day Griffins do.
Speaking as a British person, we just don't seem to be able to get the hang of adult animation. The trouble is, there's this tendency to go for gross-out and shock humour, and that was a problem even before Family Guy showed up. All this force gross insensitive humor, ugly drawn characters and sloppy plotlines where you can obviously tell it's nothing major to pay attention too-- What is the point of that? 7:35 In case you don’t know: Full English is a name used to describe the traditional British breakfast dish consisting on the familiar fried eggs, sausages and bacon but also has baked beans, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and sometimes black pudding. It can be an odd mix to Americans but in Britain, it’s as traditional and well known as toast, cereal and pancakes are to us.
According to another channel, Steve Reviews, who did a video on this show a few years ago, a “full English” is a traditionally English breakfast dish that is important to English culture. It has beans, toast, I think eggs and some other stuff and he enjoys it quite a bit
I really want Saberspark to review Rex the Runt, an *actually good* British adult animated show by Aardman (yes, the same company as Wallace and Gromit). The whole thing's on youtube. Might be a bit lost in translation with how British the references are though, and that's before you consider how weird the show is in general. There are plotlines I was convinced I'd hallucinated when I watched the whole thing (mistakenly) as a child.
So I just looked up Alex Scarfe and it turns out he's the son of Gerald Scarfe, the iconic British animator who worked on Pink Floyd's: The Wall, and was the character designer for Disney's Hercules..... yeah looking at this he doesn't really take that well after his father.
The apple couldn't have fallen farther from the tree. It's like finding out H.R. Giger has a nephew who does nothing but paint potted flowers ala Vincent van Gogh. But isn't edgy enough to cut off his own ear.
The thing is, there are some great shows that used the Family Guy format and used it well like American Dad, F is for Family, and arguably Bob's Burgers. They all put their own spin on the format that made it unique and memorable. In theory, a Family Guy-esque show set in Britain with British cultural humor could work. But instead, we got this.
Saber, I love your content dude! I’ve been watching for a few years now and I gotta say your editing (or an editor you hired I don’t know I’m out of the loop) is absolutely hilarious. Can’t wait to see more content of yours cause honestly your videos have been helping me through a lot of stuff!
We never got a handle on animated comedy here in the UK. No big rating hits, but there are a few cult cartoons I would recommend. 1) Monkey Dust - jet black sketch show satirising the worst aspects of British culture. 2) Stressed Eric - a farce about a single dad failing to control any aspect of his life. 3) We Are Not Animals - sitcom about a group of genetically enhanced animals that are more highly strung than their human counterparts.
Still amazes me how they even managed to nab Richard Ayoade to voice the main character, I'm assuming its because of the fact that he has ties with Channel 4
One British TV critic wrote that the series was called "Full English" because the likes of "Family Guy" and "American Dad!" could have it for breakfast.
The only positive for me is that some of the voice cast has gone on do much better shows. Kayvan Novak, who pulls a Seth McFarlane and voices 3 characters (the 2 sons and the green thing), is now Nandor the Relentless on "What We Do In The Shadows" (bless him, and please marry him with Harvey Guillen/Guillermo next season please). Richard Ayoade has gone on to be a BBC staple and a regular on many British and American shows, television, and films.
Richard Ayoade was indeed the only reason I knew about this show other than Steve’s video. If any of you haven’t seen The IT Crowd starring him, I recommend doing so.
Fugget about is a pretty good show imo. It definitely has the family guy formula, but it has its own ip which is pretty interesting and isn't just "fat dad is dumb and gets into trouble and it's funny."
i feel like family guy was the prototype that seth made before perfecting the style to make american dad imo. though family guy since it worked so well and came first gets all the fame
I feel like a good litmus test for most "jokes" is actually believing in the joke you're telling. The jokes don't even have to hit 100% of the time, but an audience is more willing to get on board if they can sense that the writers legitimately found their own jokes amusing. Where as too many shows in "adult animation" seem to be cynically aiming for a quota or checking a box. Not everything will appeal to everyone, but sincerity - whether in jokes or general writing; whether with a cynical or wholesome tone - goes a long way to keeping a piece of work from feeling vapid and pointless.
When I saw Steve Reviews cover this on his channel, I wondered if you or anyone else would've covered it despite it being too much for Steve Reviews himself to handle and even me. He literally bought a DVD of the show from online in order to review it. You're both brave men, Saber and Steve. Based on those clips you've showed us, it's honestly no wonder this show only lasted 6 episodes like Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon and Allen Gregory did.
with all the adult shows Saber reviews I think he should review final space next, the show is so good and caused me to cry several times, i love how the dynamics with the characters but sadly, the show got canceled and left people on a cliffhanger 😔
I've never and will never watch this show but if I were to re-write it I would want the alt-emo girl to constantly be saying correct/ normal things that everyone dismisses cause she's "fat/ emo/ a girl/ a feminist". I also want to make it so that she loves her family more than anything, despite everything, and she's a complete pushover because of that.
Happy you mention that you like F is for family because I was anxiously waiting for a video on it but it’s actually really good. Some people definitely won’t get it but it’s a nice watch
I just looked this show up on Wikipedia, and apparently the sons were voiced by Kayvan Novak, aka Nandor the Relentless. Tbh I love it when trash has weird connections to great stuff like that
@@cameronbosch1213 velma is a masterpiece it showed me the truth you all where stupid enough to Hate watch and the reason media js bad is because you all want stuff that sucks
I’m surprised this was such a bomb because it seems like it has everything they’d need. British writers for British comedy unlike the Prince, animators who worked on Futurama, weird Mr. Blobby looking alien dude, big budget….How’d they drop the ball this bad.
What a weird trend, of having things released that only got 5 episodes aired and a bonus unseen 6th episode on the home release. One show that comes to mind but is one I actually liked was Game Over! (I believe that was the title) that was 'the story about video game characters lives AFTER the game ends' with a pretty stellar cast including Patrick Warburton as the father, Lucy Liu as the mother, and featuring other actors such as Jeffrey Tambor, John Michael Higgins, and more. It was a neat little show that I'm sad didn't get more, especially when it aired around the same time as Father of the Pride (which got a full season and then some with the bonus unseen episodes on the home release version and also had a stellar cast).
You can thank Discovery wanting more cheap trash like that instead of high quality shows since it's all about the short term gains for the shareholders and executives
You should look at a movie called "dragons: fire and ice". It's a movie I watched once as a kid. I recently was remembered it when I found the dvd for it while cleaning. A dvd that came with a set of megabloks someone gave child me as a gift because they thought it was the same as lego. That's right. They bought me toys, and in the box was also a movie. A bad movie too.
Holy shit I didn't expect to see a comment referencing that movie today! I used to watch that movie a ton as a kid, hell, I still have the DVD! I've been wanting to rewatch again as an adult for some good ol nostalgia.
8:55 Oh yeah, Saberspark, you forgot to mention that Rough Draft is also working on Disney's Chibiverse! (although that series aired on July 29th, 2023)
Brickleberry was weird man, it went from that failure to Paradise PD (which actually went on for a while like that did surprisingly well), and now it went to space with Farzar, not sure how long that will last tbh. Its interesting how you can take basically the same idea (and cast, and tropes) and just change the location and it magically now works.
Can you review the kirby show? It is pretty wtf. But if you do it be careful, if you show too much you'd get copyrighted. Just thought I'd make a suggestion :) Weird stuff about it: everyone has funny accents, meta knight swears, guns, demons, blood, dedede might be gay, kine the fish has a crush on a little girl, and weird references.
This is so strange as - as a British person who was still watching stuff like Channel four round this time- I have literally never heard of this before. If you ever want a good british comedy show that actually caters to British sensibilities that people round the world can still watch to check out tho Saber- its not animated but friday night dinner is a really funny one!
Awesome video! I actually found out about this show through Steve Reviews and I'm shocked that this show even made it to TV. Guess it shows that all Family Guy clones are that successful...
Alex Scarfe is the son of famous cartoonist Gerald Scarfe. Don’t think you mentioned that. Gerald Scarfe used to do caricatures of Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s for Private Eye and most notably the initial designs for Hades in Disney’s version of Hercules. This may explain why the series got green lit. Don’t know why Richard Ayoade did this one.
@Lendri ''Badger'' Mujina It's not the fact that some people didn't really care for it that is the problem with his review. It's WHY he complained about the movie in his review. It had to do with ridiculous reasons, like not mention 9/11 in a film based in the early 2000s, despite being based in Canada and you know, NOT BEING THE SUBJECT OF THE MOVIE in the first place! And it's borderline offensive to people who may have lost family members in the disaster (I fortunately didnt, as my father was in the Garment District, but his coworker's son barely made it out in time, and yes, he was okay).
I mean, while I agree that American Dad is comparable to Family Guy... we have to remember that American Dad is to Family Guy as Futurama is to The Simpsons.
Futurama is to The Simpsons? I think a more accurate comparison would be what Disenchantment is to Futurama, if I'm being completely honest. For many different reasons.
@一新名2021 the point I was making was that they are made by the same people. Not so much drawing a direct comparison. Groening made Futurama and The Simpsons (and Disenchantment actually) MacFarlane made Family Guy, and American Dad My point was more "there's a reason they're similar" not "these shows are similar"
You should really do a video on Meet The Feebles. It's actually a Peter Jackson film from before LOTR, and it's crazy puppetry with tons of love and soul, while also being a "dirty furry" movie.
The only good thing about this show was the facts that Edgar was voiced by the very talented Richard Ayode who is best known for playing the character Moss in the i t crowd though Americans would likely know him for appearing in movies like Jerry in Soul and Professor Marmalade in the Bad Guys
You should check out the British show Spitting Image, a hand puppet "news satire?" that is actually good, and has hand dozen of american voice actors to do it, like half of the futurama cast in it
If I had to think of a good adult cartoon that's edgy and distinctly Brittish off the top of my head, I would recomend _Monkey Dust_ It's not a sitcom but more of an short/sketch compillation with some recurring characters and a very bleak sense of humor
At 15:28 this would've been funny to mention that nothing forever (a ai created Seinfeld) was created and got popular before getting banned off twitch for making a "funny" joke (if you know, you know) which in my opinion is ironic

@@utubrGaming oh yeah how could I forget those lol
How dare the cartoon using the same name as the traditional and well regarded breakfast?
I really want Saberspark to review Rex the Runt, an *actually good* British adult animated show by Aardman (yes, the same company as Wallace and Gromit).
The whole thing's on youtube. Might be a bit lost in translation with how British the references are though, and that's before you consider how weird the show is in general. There are plotlines I was convinced I'd hallucinated when I watched the whole thing (mistakenly) as a child.
What of Dennis the menace? (UK version)
Don’t forget Angry Kid.
So I just looked up Alex Scarfe and it turns out he's the son of Gerald Scarfe, the iconic British animator who worked on Pink Floyd's: The Wall, and was the character designer for Disney's Hercules..... yeah looking at this he doesn't really take that well after his father.
To be fair, Gerald Scarfe is a hard act to follow. If "unhinged" could be summed up in an art style, his would be it.
@@Lizard____ agree tho, his artstyle are unique on his own, so maybe his son should find his own artstyle..?
@@durratulaishah3703 agreed but his artstyle, at least for this show looks really generic
The apple couldn't have fallen farther from the tree. It's like finding out H.R. Giger has a nephew who does nothing but paint potted flowers ala Vincent van Gogh. But isn't edgy enough to cut off his own ear.
Boy, I sure hope that scream was the only work Lois's voice actress had to do that day.
I think the Family Guy Parody skit from South Park had better writing, better characters, and better voice acting than any other Family Guy rip-off.
You think THAT’S bad? Remember that time I sang La Cucaracha for Paul McCartney?
@@audiovisualcringe no I don't
Okay but American Dad is pretty good. It's the result of Family Guy's cancelation and had a rough start but has found its own identity.

That fat girl character made me instantly think "my little princess, isn't she beautiful". I felt vindicated when the meme played right after. lol
Also go the stop motion and puppet route; e.g. _Mongrels_ or _Rex the Runt_.
@@hjalfi Rex the Runt! I forgot all about that show.
@@willpalmer615 It's all on TH-cam now! And somehow it's even more bizarre and funny.
Animals of Farthing wood the first two seasons are pretty good.
don't hug me i'm scared is a pretty good british show too, but i don't know if it counts as "animation" tho. I think it does
Still amazes me how they even managed to nab Richard Ayoade to voice the main character, I'm assuming its because of the fact that he has ties with Channel 4
You know Saber has suffered so much when he quotes a scene from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
I read this comment right before he said it 🤣
One British TV critic wrote that the series was called "Full English" because the likes of "Family Guy" and "American Dad!" could have it for breakfast.
Breakfast is a bit too generous. FG and AD would find this in their toilet after a trip to taco bell
Yeah the voice actors sound kinda decent
Also Richard Ayoade oH yEaH I remember watching the crystal maze with him
Holy shit I had no idea that was Nandor...Dude's way too talented for this.
Richard Ayoade was indeed the only reason I knew about this show other than Steve’s video. If any of you haven’t seen The IT Crowd starring him, I recommend doing so.
Richard Ayoade also voiced the mayor/main villain from the movie The Bad Guys.
A Princess Diana joke? Even HBO’s the Prince didn’t do that.
It's been a while since we had a funny clip before the intro card. I kinda missed that.
Fugget about is a pretty good show imo. It definitely has the family guy formula, but it has its own ip which is pretty interesting and isn't just "fat dad is dumb and gets into trouble and it's funny."
American Dad is nothing like Family Guy tho, there are no cutaway gags at all and it actually has characters.
i feel like family guy was the prototype that seth made before perfecting the style to make american dad imo. though family guy since it worked so well and came first gets all the fame
2:37 When Saber began talking this phrase, I was screaming in joy in my chair XD
All I need to watch is the intro to explain everything in this video.
@notgonnalie. No
*PEEEEEETAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH*

No, we went past that.
1:05 the fact I laughed at the Walter White with the i-forget-which-console start up noise instead of the clip of the show says something...
The console that startup came from was the Playstation 2. You’re welcome.

I just looked this show up on Wikipedia, and apparently the sons were voiced by Kayvan Novak, aka Nandor the Relentless. Tbh I love it when trash has weird connections to great stuff like that

Is the most British I’ve ever heard a man.
I don't even remember it being on TV. That's how little impact it had on anyone.
Yeah
How am I still finding new Saberspark videos as if I just started watching his videos??
why cant velma get cancled as fast as this show
Because Velma TV show is diverse
Because Velma had too much publicity and they appropiated a popular franchise that everybody knew
You can thank Discovery wanting more cheap trash like that instead of high quality shows since it's all about the short term gains for the shareholders and executives
Steve Reviews actually did a great review of the series and why it didn’t work. Great vid btw!
I wonder who even decided this show would be a good idea.
5:31 American dad has a lot of differences that it’s more inspired than a clone
It's also made by MacFarland as well so there's that
As a Brit, I've never heard of this show...and yet I am still so sorry
it's ok............we get what it's like we're america.
Yeah 😅I never heard this show before now either
I don't think anyone else pointed this out yet, but…
*where are the shadows???*
Nice reference to Death from Puss in Boots. Very nice!
Didn't the creators joke about how they were able to pitch the same show only with a different set of visuals

Weird stuff about it: everyone has funny accents, meta knight swears, guns, demons, blood, dedede might be gay, kine the fish has a crush on a little girl, and weird references.
I also never remember this show, nor did I see it advertised. It just looks terrible though 😂 so I'm glad I didn't catch it.

It's crime in itself that international treasure, Richard Ayoade, has to be a part of this
Awesome video!
I was about to say how i'm British and have never heard of this, but then you said it got cancelled after 1 month!
Yeah that explains why we’ve never heard of it
The big green thing makes me think of The Poddington Peas so now I’m gonna have to go watch that for several hours
As a mexican I am interested on a review of yours about the "mexican Family Guy"

I do hope Saberspark takes a look at Stressed Eric someday. Sounds like he could use some quality animation with good jokes in his life, poor thing
I agree. I don't even care what Mr Enter says.
@@lydiajulianprower8356 Ever since the shitstorm that was the Turning Red review Mr. Enter did, I cannot support him.
That one definitely isn't for everyone. I wasn't a fan either.
@@cameronbosch1213 I was talking about Stressed Eric, not Turning Red or the review...
Groening made Futurama and The Simpsons (and Disenchantment actually)
MacFarlane made Family Guy, and American Dad
My point was more "there's a reason they're similar" not "these shows are similar"
2:40 REFERENCE!!
You should really do a video on Meet The Feebles. It's actually a Peter Jackson film from before LOTR, and it's crazy puppetry with tons of love and soul, while also being a "dirty furry" movie.
full english is the reason why im crying all night every night.
1:42 it can taste the pixels of that jpg
It's like F is for Family, and Family Guy had a lovechild that was horrifying beyond comprehension.
The only good thing about this show was the facts that Edgar was voiced by the very talented Richard Ayode who is best known for playing the character Moss in the i t crowd though Americans would likely know him for appearing in movies like Jerry in Soul and Professor Marmalade in the Bad Guys
In American Dad's defense. It's created by Seth Macfarlane, you know, the guy who created Family Guy.
Facts
You should check out the British show Spitting Image, a hand puppet "news satire?" that is actually good, and has hand dozen of american voice actors to do it, like half of the futurama cast in it
Ironic that Family Guy had an episode where they did a British version of themselves.
Whats funny is some people from Family guy were working on Bordertown. Apparently Seth had his hand on it. It is in the credits of the show.
If I had to think of a good adult cartoon that's edgy and distinctly Brittish off the top of my head, I would recomend _Monkey Dust_
It's not a sitcom but more of an short/sketch compillation with some recurring characters and a very bleak sense of humor
At 15:28 this would've been funny to mention that nothing forever (a ai created Seinfeld) was created and got popular before getting banned off twitch for making a "funny" joke (if you know, you know) which in my opinion is ironic
When cancel culture does something good for once
Cancel culture and a show being cancelled are two completely different things..
A planned economy wouldn't allow for such shit
You know it's bad when cancel culture did a good job for once.
Cancel culture involves someone canceling something for Being “too offensive” or “too scary for their little gremlins” seriously, why do people only blame snowflake parents when the kids are just as guilty!
