  • Stockfish is the ultimate chessplaying machine but we usually forget it's not perfect. In fact, the average player can perform better than Stockfish when evaluating certain positions. Here we explore two positions that are difficult, if not impossible to understand for Stockfish, but that we humans can understand and solve.

Very very good video! Keep it up! I like that Penrose made a random appearance wasn’t expecting the parallel universe black hole guy to pop up in a chess video 😭.

this is a depth issue. Stockfish can solve it with enough depth.

this isnt a depth issue its just impossible OK? even if we had 1 million planets each with 1 trillion people and each person using 1 million computers and each computer running 1 million chess analysis tabs and calculating 100 trillion moves every millisecond for 100 billion years we would be no where close to be able to anylyse 50 moves let alone 40! unless you are 5 years old i hope you are expeienced with the idea of exponentials which increase in size by a factor of an increasing amount.

@@HashBrown-n6r you have no idea how stockfish works do you? 😅 it doesn’t analyze every tree of every move. You can set the move depth to beyond 50. 55 depth solves this problem already

It’s just the lack of forcing moves in the position that makes pruning that tree not feasible… also three bishops in the dark squares is something you never see in a real game 😅. Of course SF is a brilliant system but this position is just absurd, the engine was not designed to handle this kind of outliers that never come up in a serious game. There are several discussions over there about this “Penrose chess puzzle” although I didn’t come up with anyone mentioning that SF could solve it given enough computational resources, I hope I didn’t miss anything…
