Okay, commenting now after watching... It's just amazing how much research you do and how passionate you are about fashion history. I dated a fashion designer for 10 years and my sister used to be the couture designer for Ralph Lauren, so I spent many years listening to people who are passionate about fashion, and it's truly a joy to listen to you. I know how much work you must've put into this, so thank you! :)

I love seeing this! People dont deep dive into 60s and 70s fashions like this because of how much new and unique things came from that time. Id love to see more dives into different corners of vintage/mid-century fashion! Or even like evolutions of fashion through a decade or "era" I just love how much you incorporated the cultural implications and influences of the time here and your "french pimple" video. I'll keep watching if you keep creating❤❤❤

I found this channel through the Unsolved Mysteries video, but this video was super interesting too! I don't really care about fashion, personally, but I love a history lesson that explains elements of the past well. I've enjoyed videos Kaz Rowe has done on fashion for the same reason. They answered questions for me like "What was life like for women wearing corsets? Why on earth did corsets even come about? How did corsets evolve at the time, and how have they evolved since?" Like, it's easy to say, "corsets, WTF?!" but it's really interesting to learn some more history, especially if it explores the human experience and socio-political goings-on at the time.
Anyway, I'm really glad I found this channel, and I'll recommend it to people when related topics come up. A couple things I'd recommend looking into are audio mixdown (and general audio mixing) in the video editing program you use, and how best to use your sound recording setup. Hopefully you won't need to go so far as room prep or turning off AC, though 'cause that's a big hassle, IMO. I bring this up because your videos are a lot quieter than most TH-cam videos, and I had to turn my volume all the way up a few times. Also, I'm very aware of how hard it can be to get great audio sometimes. Fortunately, there are a lot of easy, automated steps in audio mixing that will do most of the work for you. (some you do have to finesse, but it becomes second nature, especially when the recording environment and voice doesn't change much.) To be clear, this is stuff I'm currently familiarizing myself with. I've wasted so much time manually adjusting audio levels when I could've used a compressor and then just tweaked it. I'd say it's embarrassing, but hey, I learned now! 🤣I have a good ear for detail, but for a long time I just never thought to research basic tools of the trade, so to speak. You probably already know a lot of this stuff, but I wanted to bring it up, just in case. I hope you find your ideal work-flow that makes this stuff simple, 'cause I'm already looking forward to seeing new videos from this channel, and I've only seen two, so far!
Keep up the good work! I hope this channel goes far, because you're really good at making fascinating informative videos about stuff I didn't even know I would be interested in!

Awesome video! and the outfit is super cool. I love the earrings🤍, too; but the makeup is sooo good! 💙💙❤
This video prompted me so many ideas; it's very engaging and interesting. I really like that, while having an appreciation for fashion, you still have critical comments on it.
Talking about science fiction is so fascinating because it reveals how not only history but also imagination is tied to its conditions of possibility, sometimes being even more revealing of ideologies than historical events. Utopia, a hyperbolization of current values; and dystopia, a hyperbolization of current anxieties. (also, I sense there is some colonial thinking on some of those narratives, aliens, settlement, discovery and conquest of another planet [land], tied to the gender elements).
Thanks for your insights! very informative and well delivered!

    • @aliciavquinn
      @aliciavquinn  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thank you for this thoughtful comment! I’ve read it several times over ☺️ and couldn’t agree more - I think that particular aspect of possibility in Sci-Fi and horror reveals SO much of its given culture climate. And very true re: colonialism themes…some of it is just straight up glorified western imperialism but in ✨space✨
Thanks for watching and commenting, as always!

Even if Retro-Futurism as a concept is more or less complete bunk when it comes to speculating on the likely trajectory of the future, as an artistic motif it’s almost peerless.
Some of my favorite pieces of media (e.g. Fallout, Batman the Animated Series, Thief) have tended to base their design elements around anachronistic futures that remain defined by the idioms and conventions of the eras from which they stem.
If nothing else, it makes for a strong visual component, much like how Barbarella is only recalled with fondness due to its distinctly psychoactive envisioning of intergalactic life…alongside Jane Fonda’s scant sartorial sense in the picture.

I'm glad you did this video, which is strange, because I really REALLY hate that "futuristic" aesthetic from the 60s and 70s. I'm glad "Alien" came along and put an end to it once and for all. But like I say, I liked this video because it allowed me to nurse a hatred. So, thank you? Seriously, I'm glad you did this video.
I never considered that those Trek miniskirts might have been liberating; that is an intriguing angle. But, I would bet anything Roddenberry felt women should look hot if you're going to put them on camera at all. Roddenberry simply had issues. I am one of the few people who watches a ton of "Have Gun - Will Travel" reruns, which Roddenberry wrote heavily for; and you can always spot a Roddenberry episode because it's sexist as hell. I think he really wanted to write women well; he just couldn't get past his own preconceptions. It stood out even in 1960 when compared to other HGWT series writers, and it was there aplenty on "Star Trek". And even on TNG, man, dude never developed what we would consider healthy expectations about women.
Circling back around to fashion though, check out those uniforms on the last couple seasons of DS9. They're breathtaking; they look good on everyone without coming off as the least bit sexist or unprofessional. A masterpiece of space fashion.

DAAAAAH--LING....how did I not find you until TODAY?!? You are SUPER FAAAAAAAB--U--LOUS!!
Sooooooooo...delighted to "discover" you!! So BRIGHT and SUCH a maaaarvelous fashion maven!! I ADORE U!!
Luuuuuuuuuuved this examination of the GLORY of 1960's deeee--liciously "Space Age "/"Sci-fi" designs !!! 🤩
And indeed, how could we NOT mention Cardin and Rabanne and Quant, etc.!! Though I enjoy fashion of most
types and styles of the last 100 years in particularly...the 60's!! Marvelous and so innovative! I have a number of outfits from the period! My mother was an artistic gorrrrrrrrrrgeous Italian woman that many compared physically to Sophia Loren! First time I ever saw a woman wearing gold lame' was on my mother in 1961...several years before such things began to enter into
world fashion as known then to what is is now! I fell maaaaadly in love with it, and would try it one when she was at
work (YES...quite "enabling" for a woman of that era!!) in a VERY chic uptown North Side beauty salon in Chicago!--I would
sneak into her closet and try it ON! Ohh...Heavenly! Was my FIRST introduction for ME to become a crossdresser... which
became a "calling" for me and have been dedicated to for the last 40 years!!! I LUV IT!!! And THRILLED you mentioned the wild UFO, the legendary "Barbarella", the delicious "Forbidden Planet", and MOST of all, the FAR underseen"Flight To Mars"
! LOVED the dresses... and YES--I have TWO custom created duplicates down for me...one accurately and precisely like
the one in the film in satin...and another in GLORRRRIOUS Latex--which is the "futuristic material of the 21st Century!
It is SOOO glorious to wear...nothing else quite like it! TRY it some day yourself! One used to it--you'll adore it! And yes
Thieery Mugler and Versace brought it into high fashion--thank goodness! The "NEW" space age materials, not just
for fetishist--but I'll wear that as well. And of COURSE the magical leathers that have arrived in the last 30-ish years!
Daaaah-ling...we simply MUST talk much MUCH more! PLEASE forgive my delay in finding you! SO much in common!
And shall be watching your videos and shorts as quickly and often as I can! YOU my dear--ROCK!! HUGE hugs to you! 🤩
Shall find you on Instagram, girlfriend!! OODLES to share there as well! Aaaaand, I can ever discover ME! I'l worth it! Haa! 😎
