My first impression of this boss as a kid: 6:17 - "Oh sweet, I beat him. That was too easy!" 6:25 - "Wait, what's going on?" 6:38 - "OH YOU'VE GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDING ME!" And I got stuck on him for 2 weeks. Talk about an unexpected difficulty curve
The way you can also defeat this boss (since this boss has 10,000 Life energy)... Have several Ultra Fire, Ultra Blizzard and Ultra Thunder attack items (since those ultras deal 1,000 damage).

He pulled a Sigma on you, I hate that especially if the boss was a pushover the first battle, but thats usually a clue to gimmicks like that.
as a boss, u know u are fucked when boss music stops and opening song starts (in this case "Fight, X!" theme)

One other thing you can do during the second phase is use attacking items like Mega Fire; Mad Nautilus won't counter those attacks.
