LOLOLOL i didnt know Norbert played this role!! ahaha its great! i love it! hes amazing! i love how all the emcees bring their own special thing to it haha
Some people are saying they’re too masculine, but as a non-binary person I must defend Norbert’s choices. The emcee IS NON-BINARY which means they can do whatever the fuck they want. I would know.
I don’t know that I personally agree with the take that Emcee is non-binary as my take is that (while yes they’re a tangible person) they’re more of a spectre of what’s to come for the rest of the show. But I don’t hate that take at all.
I looooce NLB but let's be honest no one beats Alan in this role. However I feel like my life would be so complete if Aaron tveit also played the emcee at some point.
Ohhh, when I said he was kind of masculine, I didn't really think it was a bad thing. I appreciate that it is DIFFERENT and it's his own. And definitely hott.
@SuperBananaChannel How is he German? Because he's German! He is the Emcee of a nightclub in BERLIN, which is in GERMANY. Apparently they have a lot of patrons who speak French and English, because he says everything 3 times, in German, French, and English. So when he speaks English, it's with a German accent, not a French accent. Germans can say "Je suis enchanté" and remain German. Can't believe you missed the fact that the lyrics are in three languages.
I'm with 3goodtimes. I love NL Butz, but I remember watching this show when it aired originally, before I knew who he was, and thinking everything about him is wrong (except that he's obviously talented). Too muscular, too overtly masculine, too Aryan looking. And perhaps it's just because they need to go quickly for a TV spot, but this whole performance feels too rushed and frantic. This is '30s jazz. It should be relaxed. Love him in Wicked, Last 5 Years, and Catch Me...but this one just doesn't work.
I kinda agree with everyone saying this role wasn't the best for Norbert but, then again, I'm not sure. I guess it depends on the approach to the role the producers and the actor are pursuing. No doubt that the likes of Joel Grey and Alan Cumming set the pace and the image for this role (and even for this act specifically). But I don't dislike this approach - a flamboyant more masculine Emcee, giving us all a bit of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
You know what though? Compared to some other Emcee performances...there is something completely masculine about his. Like...when Alan Cumming does it, it is so flaming. Norbert, not so much. I get a little bit of a frat boy vibe when he improv dances at certain parts...anyone else?
@SuperBananaChannel um, okay then, when he speaks French, it's with a German accent, not a French accent. You made a snarky comment about the actor not doing a good French accent, when the character is the one speaking French as a second language. And I'm done defending him to you; I'm sure you have a long list of successful and talented people you need to go snipe at from the comfort of your computer chair. Carry on.
Norbert Butz is perfect for this part - unexpected, a little dangerous with ambiguous sexuality - closer to Joel Grey and WAY better than Alan Cummings who was predictable.
I'VE NEVER BEEN MORE OBSESSED WITH A PERFORMER I LOVE HIM
Same
I love the punk-rock like camp, and strength he brings to this. very interesting, unique and genius, IMHO.
This is my favorite version of this song. He just does it sooooo well.
Totally agree
I want to see Joel Grey and Norbert singing this while in character as The Wizard and Fiyero.
it's 2022 and this is currently my favorite video ever
Butz is awesome in this.
I would’ve never thought in a million years that he would portray Bill Belichick, but he does a great job. He really capture the coach’s quirks
Dying at the “yeah I bet you do” deadpan accent break
LOLOLOL i didnt know Norbert played this role!! ahaha its great! i love it! hes amazing! i love how all the emcees bring their own special thing to it haha
HE'S JUST...OMG....I love him so much!
God, I love him!
Hard roll to play and he did it very well as he does with all his rolls that i have seen
wow, so fabulous! id love to see him do the whole show

Holy shit that would be amazing.
I loved this!!!
@janjalick Joel Grey originated the role of the Emcee and also played him in the movie version (very different from the play).
Oh my....Norbert.....
Awesome
Dear replay button,
Im sorry I keep hitting you.
This is the Sam Mendes production, and Alan Cumming was the MC - this is the touring production.
its weird seeing NLB being camp... he's usually so manly.. mmmm, brilliant part though :D
@SuperBananaChannel the character is GERMAN, herpy derp
This is hot.
@BubbleGumClaudia Liza didn't originate the role on Broadway. Jill Haworth did and she wasn't even nominated for a Tony Award.
❤️❤️❤️
@potoluvr09 But Joel Grey didn't play him nearly as flamboyantly as the revival actors.
@ivyshoots thanx now i fully get it
Ohhh, when I said he was kind of masculine, I didn't really think it was a bad thing. I appreciate that it is DIFFERENT and it's his own. And definitely hott.
@janjalick lol, don't forget Joel Grey as well! lol, the original emcee
Kevin... is that you...?

@ivyshoots how is it german when if he says "enchente"
Oh my... =)
@janjalick Not to mention John Stamos and Joel Grey!
lol he should play Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast if he's that beastly at a french accent
whats with the ankers on his arms?
@janjalick You forgot John Stamos and Malcolm Gets did it. And Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman) was OFFERED the part, but turned it down...

ummm..... has he just surpassed Alan Cummings...... what in the musical theatre is happening to me
he's so hot omg

Cummings was WAY off in this show. Butz' interpretation is more like Joel Grey.
though this is really creepy he's good at this
What year was this?
@ivyshoots um i meant the accent
Hm. Not the role for Norbert, I think. He has too much masculine physicality and emcee requires androgyny. But he's still one of the best around.
I disagree because the role is non-binary. The emcee can adopt as many “masculine “ or “feminine” traits as they want. I’m non-binary so I would know.
the role requires androgyny. NB wasn't even a thing when it was written .@@Amy-hm9cp
Sorry but nobody is better than Alan
Agreed but this seems like a much different take on the character!
When was this?
Just wondering how old Norbert was
1999, Norbert was around 32
Or a very drunk man...either way he's awesome lol
@janjalick NPH played him once? Really? Not sure who Raul Esparza is...don't hit me!...but I knew Adam and Alan played this part as well.
i adore norbie, he'sa great performer, but no one captured the sleazy sexiness and desperation of the MC like Alan
You know what though? Compared to some other Emcee performances...there is something completely masculine about his. Like...when Alan Cumming does it, it is so flaming. Norbert, not so much. I get a little bit of a frat boy vibe when he improv dances at certain parts...anyone else?

I never knew he was in Cabaret
girl works it at 3:32
I agree, Cometfirefly; He's terribly talented (south St. Louis neighbor!), but not right for the part. Should be leading "Tomrrow belongs to Me."
@BubbleGumClaudia wow....someone needs to calm the Hell down.
Thought maybe watching Norbert in this would make me have something to appreciate about the roundabout production, but nah, it's still shit.
