The Canadian Forces Station at the top of the world

  • With the sun never cresting the horizon from mid-October until the end of February, there is not much to see at Alert. But the 79 soldiers and civilians stationed at CFS Alert have had a very positive experience near the top of the world. Matthew Fisher has more.

    My father served 3 tours of duty at CFS Alert in the 70s. Mental health issues were not high on the priotry list at the time and were not well understood. He spent almost 3 years of his life in Alert and the isolation of living in that environment I feel contributed to his decline in his mental health later in his life. He quit the service when they told him he was to be promoted but would be required to do another posting in Alert in 1982.

My dad down south used to run Ham radio phone patches so soldiers could speak to their families... a far cry from today. We used to come up to the station for a shower as we didn't have such luxuries ourselves.

    Interesting comment about the polar bears as bears were never an issue at least up to the late-80's/early-90's. I worked in the quarry in the summers of '88 & '90 and the wild mammals I saw close to the station were Arctic Hare (think the killer bunny from the Monty Python movies - the hare are "big" and essentially fearless!), Arctic Fox, Arctic Wolf, Lemming, Peary Caribou and one time I saw a seal (not sure of the species) in the small bay below the quarry.

    That’s climate change for you, did two tours in the 90s one light one dark, no polar bears. Lots of dump wolves those days though.

      @logos2613 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Polar Bears are all (?) tagged ... the science ice-shelf team were able to track them. I think we were down to only two wolves after the dump was cleaned up ... plenty of foxes, and lemming.

    Plot twist, it's just Russians in polar bear suits that rummage through the stations garbage. "ooh Commisar, we found the Canadian cheese, not edible glorious leader."

    • @qboxer
      @qboxer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beards no longer require chits. Members may grow neatly groomed beards if desired - with the caveat that if one's beard looks like rubbish, the chain of command can tell them to shave it off.
