First work on the loft layout

  • Yes, it's true. I'm moving upstairs to the loft. First job was to fit batterns to support insulation board. Job stopped now due to the starlings having a next osmewhere under the eaves. There are a few issues to overcome, the gas fire exhaust, the extractor fan for the bathroom. That is what they invented spray foam for!
    I do not know when the second part will start and I must think of a name for the layout.

      I was up there this evening putting in some horizontal board supports. I might be getting the insulation the end of this month. Now that will take a while. Then the destruction begins. It's going to be a very long job.

      Thankyou. Horizontals are in. Insulation coming on friday. I went up mid week and it must of been 40 degrees. I hope the insulation works or I'm in the mire!

    Have fun Simon. Lots to do. Just sorting all the insulation is a mission all of it's own. Least it's not to hot at the moment Pete

      I've picked the ideal time to do the job. Insulation board coming the end this month if I find time to crack on with it. Thanks Pete

    Hi Simon, you're off to a great start!!
    Reading the comments it occurs to me that maybe you could use the outlet pipe through the roof to vent the loft. Mind you maybe not too important if when it's hot you're out playing golf ...... I hope!!
    I couldn't work out the relative size available to you now compared to what you had downstairs. It looks at least two or three times as long and maybe half as wide? Downstairs always seemed enormous until you realise its n gauge!!
    We have task ahead of us to dismantle my Dads O gauge loft layout and dispose of it. His was a much older house with large beam for the roof so no reverse struts.
    I wish you luck and look forward to seeing your progress but I sincerely hope the weather keeps you on the course and not on track!!
    All the best

      Hello David, no need to have a vent. There will be plenty of circulation outside of my room. Was doing some more timber this evening. A little more tomorrow.
      As to length the one downstairs is deceptively long due to the go and return on the same board. It's longer in the loft but not by as much as you would imagine. What will be different is there will be more 'scenes' to pass through. I think that is what I wanted. Plus now I know the things I didn't do so well and the things I forgot to do. The plan is better and so the execution will be better. Plus I will have a fiddle yard off layout so it will be easier to switch trains. One thing is certain - I will not rush it.

    Hi Simon! You're on your way! Looks like you've got a pretty decent space to play trains in, or at least it will be once you've got the temperatures under control! Good luck! All the best, Ian.

      Hello Ian, not going to heat it or have velux windows. The insulation should keep the extreme ends of the temperature range at bay. I've been up here before on a failed project so I know my ideal height and width. Going for 60cm so I can reach all the way across easily. I can get 3 lines in that space. Strangely the length wont be that much more due to having the tracks run twice on the same board downstairs. But I will have more 'scenes' to create and run through.

    Sounds like you have it sorted Simon, having had a layout in the loft in England it is key to make it a good place to spend time,

    • @ngaugeonashelf4417
      @ngaugeonashelf4417  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I should be able to cut out the 2 extremes. There will still be a range of temperatures but more managable. Plus keep out the filth. When I work in there my hair is full of it after.

    Hi Simon. I didn,t think that you were going to make a start on your new layout for some time. You have made a good start in the loft, you know you space better than I do. But that big pipe from the extinct downstairs fire is not so difficult to remove. If it unscrews thats great, but if it doesn't the drill a couple of big holes in it near the top and bottom. Then hire a reciprical saw and cut through it. Then cut it up into more manageable pieces and get it out. Stuff some of your Rockwall insulation into the open ends and then gaffer tape a bin liner over the ends. Job done. Now you won,t have to work around it. It seems a shame to dismantle your layout but needs must. You already know how to save as much as possible so I won,t comment on that but the track can be a problem. You will definately loose some of it , thats a given. But to get the rest up where you used PVA use warm water and soak it, then as the grip releases slide a metal edge under it and gently prise it away from the board. When I say Soak it I don,t mean throw a bucket of water over it. Use a large sponge and soak an area at a time. Take your time and you will definately get a lot of it back. Good luck.

      Hi Brian, it's going to be a long slow build. Right now I want to get the horizontal timbers in and then the insulation next. Once those jobs are done I will slow down. My thought with the gas exhaust is it goes into a ventilated roof ridge tile. If I disturb it inside I'm worried about what might happen outside. As that end will be the fiddle yard it's not going to interfere with the main running so I feel it's best left alone.
      With the track I will lift the pins first and then use my largest flat wallpaper scrapers to ease very gently under the track. Water also as you say to loosen it all. The track will be the last job to recover. I will lose some without a doubt. Flexi track very easily seperates from the chairs. I will take my time for sure. If I lose a lot then so be it. That's life. OO gauge is more robust than N and I will have to take it on the chin or the wallet! Thanks

    Excellent plan! Have you got heating in the loft? Will that be an issue either way, 'cos you don't want to freeze, but on the other hand, you don't want to pay a fortune keeping the loft warm? Exciting times, and something to do over the dark months!

    • @ngaugeonashelf4417
      @ngaugeonashelf4417  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No heating. The inuslation keeps out the 2 extremes of hot and cold. I think the cold is probably the worst. That and the muck that falls down from the roof.

    Hi Simon, that looks so complicated, I would be giving up about here. Are you sure about this? Ron (Good to hear I'm not bring left behind)

    • @ngaugeonashelf4417
      @ngaugeonashelf4417  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It looks complicated but isn't really Ron. I can't describe it as it's all in my head. You will have to wait for the result. I'm putting in the horizontals for the board now. Insulation in a couple of weeks. Then I take a big break to play some golf. I'll get back to it in september. Cheers

    Hi Simon. Good luck in the loft! Is ventilation in just one corner going to be enough? The gap is made for the full length of the eaves (for possibly a reason?).

    • @ngaugeonashelf4417
      @ngaugeonashelf4417  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Paul, it is clear all the way along. Plus that big pile will be dragged back away from the eaves as soon as I start putting in the board. It's just shoved up out of the way for the moment.
