This is such a powerful thought to me- without God in the picture, without giving him the figurative reigns in our symbolic "houses," our labour and energies are all in vain. Without putting God on the wall to watch for enemies, our own efforts to guard and protect are a waste of time.
I think it's a sobering thought for many of us. We can all admit that many times we're building our families, careers, missions and ministries in our own strength.
It might not make it easier to manage, but one way to discover whether we're letting God build and guard is by being honest about our stress level. Are we stressed? Then maybe we're trying to do things in our own effort.
I'll admit that financial stresses are one of my weak spots. I need to give more of my worries to God, and stop trying to carry it all myself.
It's interesting that this Psalm references children so much. I believe that it gives readers a strong indication that he's not talking about building houses of stone and brick, or guarding literal cities. This is a metaphor to building a life.
If I'm honest, I'd say that my children are one of the biggest joys in my life. It's clear that children are a gift from the Lord.

1 Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. Unless the Lord guards the city, the guard keeps watch in vain.
2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives sleep to his beloved.
3 Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the sons of one’s youth.
5 Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

So true .... I feel I failed with my children, tried too hard to make sure they liked me. So now I reap the reward, they have no respect for me as adults. Very sad.
