- The Institut Henri Poincaré produces an exclusive 32-minute documentary on the outstanding mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange, in co-production with CNRS Images and in partnership with the Lagrange Institute of Paris.
Historians retrace Lagrange's European course and show how he went from academics protected by the powerful to a teacher charged with educating new citizens at the time of the French Revolution. They pose the question of the involvement of scientists in the political life of the time.
Scientists explain how the work of Lagrange, especially in analysis and in celestial mechanics, is innovative in the way of conceiving the problems at the time, and make it possible to understand how he positioned himself on the border between mathematics and physics , and was able to deeply mark the sciences and their teaching until today. Despite the omnipresence of Lagrange in mathematics and modern physics (Equations Lagrange, Points Lagrange, Interpolation Lagrange, Lagrangian, etc ...), the life of this scholar of the Enlightenment remains unknown ...

It would be awesome if you produce this type of documentary about other scientists who were bright but do not receive as much attention as Newton,Euler or Gauss. I would love to watch something about Laplace or Cauchy for example

Bellissimo documentario per un grandissimo scienziato
Aucun de ces gens d' esprit supérieur ne peut être séparé du phénomène unique que fut la Révolution Française . Tous ont philosophiquement soutenu ses raisons et lui ont apporté leur cote part de savoir et de sagesse . On retrouve leurs effets dans les immenses progrès dus au pas en avant vers le mieux . Le système métrique , les poids & mesures ( dont la subsistance anglo offre un aspect comique des incohérences et aussi du véritable support à la malhonnêteté du commerce ! Une même unité ayant plusieurs valeurs selon le système : Troy , ou Avoirdupois , Impérial ou Américain...) et les applications mathématiques plus directes dans l' étude de notre système solaire et toutes ses grandes découvertes qui ont suivi . Une époque à ré apprendre , tant elle fut riche et exemplaire de l' esprit de notre petit pays .

Why the French always change the names? His name was Giuseppe Luigi Lagrangia
Nope ! His full name is Giuseppe Luigi de La Grange Tournier. His parents were French or of French origin (his mother's name was Gros). You can see in the documentary that he writes his letters to his father in French, and the italian people in the doc call him Lagrange.

Très bon documentaire, très intéressant. Il y a de quoi faire un long métrage, un biopic complet sur Lagrange, sur fond de révolution française :-)
