  • A Syrian Airborne Battalion defends against a Dutch heavy Mechanised force.
    This is a multiplayer game between myself, playing as the Syrians, and Rujasu from the Few Good Men, who is playing as the Dutch.

    This is with the excellent HQS Sound Mod, a tweaked version of BabaricCo's FXShine shader, Vin's Unit Icons and Sir Lancelot's Syrian Army Realism Mod.
    In Battlefront's own words:

    I think CM is a bit like dwarf fortress in the way it takes a little imagination. Much funner to say "that Syrian watched one too many war movies" than "oh great my guy's stuck in the water again."

    Even though game granted you a Minor Victory, I think it would be Total Victory on Operational Level. Such high casualties for Dutch would probably result in furious reaction of its home populus and if not full withdrawal, degrading Dutch actions to support roles.

      Cheers man! I don't think a real Dutch commander would have persisted in the attack- I think they would have stopped, hung back and bombed the town flat.

    Great video, please do more battles as the Syrians, it's much more exciting than watching NATO imo - but maybe more RPGs and fewer IEDs next time!

    Loving your work as ever. Would echo others comments about how nice it is to see a game from the Syrian perspective, not least how initial deployment seems to be all with fragile forces with limited optics, C2 and morale. Also interesting to see what happens when NATO have weapons free collateral damage is acceptable: Enemy in a building? Drop the building! And the one they just retreated into. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

    The reason why you only have one AT RPG round in the airborne squads is that the other five are kept in the BMP-3.
    For (presumably buggy) reasons, you can't select BMP-3s in Quick Battles right now, so you're out of luck.

      Yeah, I thought it might be that. Should have just gone for the RPG-16 (or actually test-purchased my force- that would have been smart). There seems to be at least a few formations missing from the QB selector- British Armoured Recce Regiments are in the Editor, but not in the QBs, which is a shame.

    That was great. I've been waiting a long time to see someone play as the Syrians and to see how they'd fair against a NATO force. You did well considering the amount of modern armour that you were up against.
    It's a shame that your airbourne mortar team only had 13 rounds (unlucky for them..), if I recall rightly you also picked a German airbourne mortar team in one of your recent CM Final Blitzkrieg multiplays because they had more ammo than a regular mortar team, so I figure that you applied the same logic this time, it's a shame it didn't pan out though.
    Out of curiosity, would it have been possible to destroy the Dutch armor while it was on the bridge and fords? Effectively turning them into roadblocks, and also denying the infantry fire support while they assaulted the town?

      Thanks! The mortars are usually mounted in trucks, with the trucks carrying most of their ammo- these ones came as an infantry-only formation without vehicles and I didn't make the connection. If any of the Dutch vehicles had been destroyed on the bridge then they would have made good roadblocks (the fords were too wide for that). The game still lets vehicles through, but only slowly and with lots of pathfinding niggles- they would be good targets though!

    I know that playing the Opfor is harder then playing Blufor but I love seeing these uphill fights and creative use of units

    Nice video ! Could you maybe try to stop at key moments and showing the whole picture ?? Like some arrows to show where you're moving troops or something? Otherwise amazing job !

      Yeah, in hindsight a bit less focus on interior shots would have made it a lot easier to follow. One to remember!

    My SPWAW experience says that Rujasu should have sectioned off his beachhead with smoke, and proceeded to level everything in the box. (Does CM get Turn 1 arty?) He let you get far too many free shots with the ATGMs.
    As always, fantastic AAR, and you are a consummate sportsman and gentleman.

    14:39 those infantry have balls of steel to be standing up and returning fire when the lead to oxygen ratio in the air around them is approaching 1:1 😅

    It pained me to see those IEDs never went off. Could've forced the armour into the fords. Regardless, will you be doing unconventional forces next?

      A PBEM as the Uncons is definitely on my list. Making a balanced game out of it could be tricky though.

      The IED´s must be triggert by a uncon with cell phone they dont go off by them self!

      @@LDZMarder There are two types of IEDs in SF2- Uncon IEDs, which need a triggerman with a radio/wire/cell phone; and Syrian Army IEDs, which operate like big mines. These will go off when vehicles drive over them... just not every time.

    Great video! LoL @21:50 . This has happened to me too. A keyhole position needs an adequately large killzone to detect and take aim even at fast moving targets.
    The battle was just carnage all over the place. I can't help feeling that the map is too small for modern weapon systems. It's point blank range everywhere.

    Now that Slithering owns Battlefront, I truly hope this pushes Battlefront to improve all aspects of these games. They’re already great, but if this game had improved visuals it would really help attract more attention. Some new features would be nice too.

    I give you lots of credit Hapless.. it is difficult to survive being the Syrian Player vs another. The FLIR of western tech and obviously in game leaves little advantage for the OPFOR. It is hard to hide and ambush unless they literally turn a corner or rush on the reverse slope. Damn fine job though.

    In regards to the game audio not being able to cope with massed firefights (I call this "the cacophony issue") that is definitely caused by the HQS sound mod.
    BFC have designed their game around gun shot sounds being often less than a half second long.
    HQS gun shots, by comparison, are often 5 seconds long.
    "The Cacophony issue" (which only really crops up in the modern games & even then only at close quarters where everyone is blazing away at full auto) can be resolved by using a more efficient sound mod (Audigasil or AKDM 1.2 are the go-to alternatives).

      Thanks man! We didn't have any house rules (full contact all the way!) but I decided that mining the bridge especially would be unfair. When I was testing the defence out, attacking units would treat the minefields as impassable terrain (once they'd found them!) and try and plot a path around them. Obviously with the bridge this led to some very unintuitive pathfinding as they started running off towards the fords without it being clear why (took me while to figure out what was going on).
      It seemed a bit harsh to purposefully create a situation where the TacAi did something stupid for my troops to exploit. Plus its a pain for the attacking player to try and play minesweeper under fire. IEDs seemed like a decent alternative, but they obviously they failed to perform. Maybe a minefield or two an action square away from the chokepoints to allow the TacAi to get around it, but still making the mines useful would be better next time.

      It would. That sort of thing is impossible to police in Quick Battles though, more of a scenario thing.

    Are the IEDs always that unreliable?

      "IED mines" are a single, massive, buried explosive. Conventional minefields are abstracted, but there are lots in a single spot, so I wouldn't be surprised if you were less likely to hit IEDs.
      Further, actual-IED (above ground, that require a triggerman) have a built in failure rate of at least 10%. It's not clear whether that failure rate applies to the buried ones, but it wouldn't surprise me.

    Can anyone help ? I purchased this game combat mission shock force 2 but it wont launch. Any place I look online mentions having to have the original game Shock Force. I was wondering is that my salutation? Or does anyone else know what the issue might be ?

    I’ve watched this battle three times and frankly, it was like watching high school student debating a phd candidate.
    There is a lot to say about firepower and superior weaponry, and then there is just solid methodical operational tactics.
    With the firepower advantages here, it should have been lots and lots (less armor and more guns guns guns) of artillery and then superior infantry mopping up.
    Bum rushing objectives invariably ends poorly. He must have known you would squirrel away anti armor teams and pick your spots. Blasting the city with a rolling barrage would have won the day.

      It's usually done via Dropbox rather than actual email, but yep. Honestly, it's the best way to play it.

I just recently picked up the demo of CMSF2 and it’s proving to be very complex. Loving the videos as an intro to the series. They’ve been incredibly informative from the beginner guide to these AARs
