Just another example that true will always shine bright. I was drawn to the rain dance vid when it dropped, and followed that rabbit all the way to all the peeps featured in this video. Props, to YAKFilms for exposing me to another positive outlet. And showing the world, that great things can come from humble beginnings. Keep dancing. RIP to homie's bruh too... Mad Respect... Netm8kr
Turfing is already changing world wide in a positive way. Not only is it just a dance its a cure. It made me get out of trouble from the drug scenes and to come out of that hole of just negative energy is something great. Im from hawaii and i hope turf lives on forever.
they used to dogg Krump the same way...and look where we are now...shout out too all da turfers who take dat negative atmosphere and do somethin positive with it Krump Up Turfs Up
@lilbilldabeast - I feel you on that and I mean, I do give some respect to jerkin, but when ignorant kids roam around the streets without a sense of background knowledge into what they're actually doing..that's when things get out of hand a bit. All in all, there has to be some credit given to each style and art form - because that's exactly what it is: Art.
I may be 'bashed' on but, this is why I give such respect to Turfers and less to 'jerkin`'. Most of the moves done in "Jerking" originally were created from Turfin` here in the Bay Area. It's about time Turfin` comes back up. Not the BONE BREAKIN AND FLEXIN Turf, but the 90s old style Turf.
I've waited a long ass time for this. Remember the music videos for "Tell Me When To Go" and "Vans?" When hyphy went national 4-5 years ago, the media contorted turfing as a cracked out drug-induced party dance. To the mainstream, "turfin," "giggin," "scrapin" and "thizzin" all meant the same thing: blast music, take drugs, and do crazy shit. As a result, a lot of other dancers (mostly poppers, breakers) didn't (and still don't) recognize turfing as a real dance. Well, how bout now?
@fulltimeweirdos im not trying to knock anything but don't even try and say the bay has been doing this. Like i said, it took what 5 years for this shit to finally reach the bay? or norcal in general? Whats kills me the most is when i was teased for listening to this type of music years ago by the same people jock it nowadays. Im all for exposure but at this rate dubstep is just gonna be another fad. and thats coming from a listener with years and years of this type of music.
@munchiezaon @oprahishawt my bad. you are right. i'm also seeing an evolution. post-tutting via ABDC and overall youtube explosion, i see WAY more 'bonebreaking' 'contortion' now than before. it actually really reminds me of older days when heads would just wave/mindgame/puzzle for 30 mins straight. same thing going on. but yeah, seriously, kidz these days are stepping it up. i know a lot of older tutting/popping heads that are smiling at the developments.
"Turf" is a regional style from the Oakland Bay Area, that has roots in waving, tutting, flex, contortion, and just plain flow. Hip hop at its core, but not like 90s, at all. Really tied to its music, hyphy or krunk, as long as it rips flow and beat. "Newstyle" is the term Europeans/French use to describe their hip hop dance that isn't identified as breaking, funkstyles, house (established, and kind of "traditional" by now) they share a lot of similarities though. is what i know.
@Cyrus925 agreed. is it just me or does it seem like now you gotta be double jointed to turf? its kinda unfair lol. but as far as jerking goes, i agree witchyu but at the same time people gotta realize that all dances originated from one dance which came from another and another lol i just think jerkin is indeed a dance and deserves alittle more respect than its given ya know?
@flatsol I am all the way in the Uk yet a part of me is crying out that this does not get any commercial exposure. Why? cause it will suck it dry and leave it in the gutter and then the free raw expresion will be killed off. Correct me if I am wrong, but all forms of dance corn from the streets, is taken, (stolen) sold and the originators get nothing.
@soFWF @hosern1 since we have no access to the video demographics we have no idea where most viewers are from, unless @YAKfilms were to say what percentage of viewers are from the US. Until then we will never know :P
ABC finally recognizing? @fulltimeweirdos @blackipinoy Mixmaster Mike and the West Coast GFunk have pioneered bass heavy ~80rpm headnod for years, yes. but if you want to talk Dubstep, talk drum n bass & jungle, which have been among Bay EDM for a while, just never hitting the surface. Even worldwide, not enough credit is given to the DNB root. that being said. It IS dancers in the nu skool, poppers, turfers, and choreo alike, that are keeping it in front of the AMERICAN mindset
@getthis22 in a lot of ways, you are NOT wrong, man. a lot of us here know the history of how breaking got co-opted, how boogaloo and popping got appropriated, with no credit. Do you know who Zulu Gremlin, Mr Wiggles, Suga Pop, Flo-master are? but today is different. the web has made it required etiquette to name your sources. and everyone is a bit more schooled in how to control their own shit. but then again, look at what ABDC did.... sigh. S1-3 were the only bits of 'truth' to me
That's poppin, maybe a little from bboying, hiphop freestyle, isn't it? Yeah you are calling that ''TURF DANCING'' because if you call it HIPHOP, the Tv wouldn't even notice you.
@blackipinoy but yes - Dubstep is fading... haha. reference: Noisia 2010, even Rusko has moved away from it. then again maybe dubstep/headnock aint dying after all. reference: tokimonsta but hey, it's all just progression of style - established style supplanted by new style, which itself then evolves and is replaced a new incarnation. so it goes.. @musikfanat @oleedee: white kids already claimed on the dubstep musiks. it's where it is because hella people bought into it as the new new
did he say that street arts have never gotten a hugely broad audience? look how bboying is now! it's in 90% of all the music videos made today! this reporter is oblivious.
Been following the Turf Feinz and the Les Twins for a year now, these guys are truly pioneers; from Oakland even out in France. ~ Hero-like.
I'm so glad to see such talented people get recognition, as opposed to being stereotyped.
I wonder what OG's like Wiggles think about all these dance styles which obv. originated from Funkstyles.
This is the video that introduced me to the twins. I still remember watching this news piece with my mom.
