Talking about the spring compression. I've seen (and done on my '95 S10) using a heavy rated ratchet strap, wrapped through the spring, while it's still compressed (before dropping lower ball joint). Keeps the spring compressed while working with it. (will mention cheapo "box store" straps might not be strong enough. ) Worked for me.
Cragar Soft 8, 17x9. I did have to use a 1/4 inch spacer because the combination of the drop spindles and the wider wheels made the tie rod contact the edge of the wheel.

Pop both ball joints loose with the nuts backed off before removing anything. Uses the coil spring for applying pressure.
