This video was the game changer. Rap videos were not aired on MTV until this video came out. This video was so big MTV had to play this video.

I also love that it cost about $20 to make this video😅 The downtown scene really was like this back then. That’s Basquiat painting in the background.

Just to set things straight with the info of this song: "Blondie" is the name of the group NOT the lead singer. (That's Debbie Harry). This was released back in 1980. Yep! we had some pretty good music floating around in those days.

This was the first rap song on MTV and the first one that went no.1 on the US Billboard charts back then.
Blondie was way ahead of her times ,a certified classic !

The very first song to feature rap predominately that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has it's place in the history of hip hop music.

of course rap had been around for decades, but she popularized and helped make it more mainstream, brought it to the wider culture..

@@ericpeterson6766 No doubt whatsoever that Blondie pushed rap into the mainstream and for millions of teens in the USA this song was their first exposure to rap and the first song featuring rap to be played on MTV.

About the video: dancer William Barnes in the white suit and top hat) is the introductory and central figure. Barnes also choreographed the piece. Much of the video is a one-take scene of lead singer Debbie Harry dancing down the street, passing by graffiti artists, Uncle Sam, an Indigenous American, child ballet dancer and a goat. Fab 5 Freddy and graffiti artists Lee Quiñones and Jean-Michel Basquiat make cameo appearances. Basquiat was hired when rapper Grandmaster Flash did not show for the shoot. The UK 7" version of the song is used in the video.

NOBODY expected this when it exploded around the globe : Blondie was punk and new wave, they fused those with disco and rap and hip hop?! 😮😮😮 Many firsts, and in my view their best track. For the record: Deb Harry made clear she did not consider this a “rap song” but an homage. It opened doors: the first “rap” played on rock stations and MTV.

Yes, the song does three musical shifts: from soft rock to rap to hard rock. Meanwhile, the title is a play on words: rap = being in romantic rapture; rap = rap music; rap = the Rapture (the end of the world). All in one song!

See, this is what I was trying to tell you about. She is the reason why rap became an accepted form of music. She had to give the M-TV white audience a taste of what rap could be, she gave them a small taste and then it was accepted. She is the Queen of rap. Give her props when they are due!

Dude, it was fun watching your face while you reacted to this one! Thanks. Blondie never connected to one particular genre, which is why they easily swayed from the new wave-rap mix of “Rapture” to the Caribbean flash of “The Tide is High.” You can put me down for T-shirt. Don't forget to check out Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation1814' Video...Really cool dancing in that.

I dig Blondie and still have several Blondie albums. ... I love Debbie Harry's voice, the funky yet still ROCKIN' guitars, and their VIRTUOSO drummer, Clem Burke. A big talent pool in this band made for some very diverse yet still very relatable hits. You may also enjoy some good TALKING HEADS, (from the same era), such as PSYCHO KILLER, TAKE ME TO THE RIVER, BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE, SWAMP, ONCE IN A LIFETIME, ROAD TO NOWHERE.

Harsh. Chillax dude. Cut him a break. This music is probably older than his parents. He's willing to listen and learn. And let's be real. Though Blondie is technically the name of the band, there's not a lot of blonde hair in that group - especially platinum blonde, so is it such a stretch to jump to the conclusion that she's Blondie - even though it's from a bottle? This is a reaction channel, so there's an assumption that it's something he's just discovering.
