By the time the finale is over it is extremely clear that this is one of the absolute greatest compositions in history. His 6th quartet as well. He is easily on Beethoven’s skill level here.
In my opinion this is Mendelssohn's magnum opus, right up there with the second piano trio and a couple other works. All four movements of such high quality, and easily his greatest slow movement. Should be regarded right up there with the Beethoven and underrated Schumann quartets
@@ClassicalMusicAndSoundtracks Nah - Mendelssohn was at his best as a composer of tight and intricate chamber music. His genuine magna opera are as followed imo: string quartets 1, 2, 5, 6; piano trios 1, 2; octet; symphony 3. SQs 3 and 4 are frothy, light and fun, but don't display the level of serious and painstaking craftsmanship that this masterpiece does.
Those are the most known works; what about his piano compositions? I do not mean only the wonderful Lieder ohne Worte, but also the Sonatas, the fantasies (this op 15!)... And the piano trios, which I love most. @@ClassicalMusicAndSoundtracks

His third and fourth quartets are much better IMO.
@@ClassicalMusicAndSoundtracks I agree with you. Absolutely.

His third and fourth quartets are much better IMO and many people think that his violin concerto, the symphony 3, the symphony 4 are his best works.

Props to Mendelssohn for giving the viola more action and to the sound engineer of this recording for acknowledging that
My favorite one by two miles :)
Superb Craftsmanship! 29:09-29:27
Four-part fugato in a scherzo
Oof
Edit: also no trio section because it's a moto perpetuo movement, wow
the adagio is the standout movement in this work. astounding.
The third movement made my eyes a bit teary towards the end- first time from a Mendelssohn composition. ♥️
My favorite one by a mile.
the Scherzo is everything
