I have a dynamite ultra glow, which runs off my starter box battery. I bought this 20+ years ago. I have moved from several different starter boxes. It has served me well and saved money. The best thing, it always works great.

I like the convenience of the wired igniters, and I always have mine in my pit bag. But in using one, I found that the wire can get in my way. Every now and then, I'll need to clear out a rich engine or something, and being tethered to the box becomes an inconvenience. Doesn't happen often, but enough that I gave up on the wires and see them as a backup to my preferred handheld.
But hey, to each his own. We're both getting them fired up. Thanks for watching.

I’ve got one of the old D-cell battery igniters from Ofna. I like to bring it around still because of how comical it is. I have a lithium usb rechargeable AA battery that is internally limited to a constant 1.5v in an adapter that makes it fit into the D-cell space and it works so effortlessly. I keep other charged lithium aa’s just in case my main dies. It’s incredibly important to note that nimh rechargeable AA’s are turds in these things, 1.2 volts that fall away pretty quickly. At least with run of the mill AA’s you get the 1.5v

I am just getting back into RCs. I pulled my Sportwerks Mayhem buggies ( ×2) 1/8. They have been in storage for 20 years. Since 2004. I watched this and and I went out and grabbed my sub C ( green) Nickel Cadnium Sanyo igniter. I just for the hell of it put it on charge last night. I just plugged it on a glow plug and it friggin worked lol. I figured it would be garbage lol. I'm going to pull my other 2 Dynamite Sub C igniters. I doubt they work lol. Let's see if this Sanyo has a charge tomorrow. Thank you for the info sir.

I have some 40 year old sub C's that work great. If stored discharged, they can last a very long time. Thanks for watching!

I looked into this a couple of months ago. Forum posts from some detailed guy seemed to indicate that cycling a NiMH cell provided no benefit, and if anything, slightly more wear/oxidation on the cell chemistry. This was good news to me, as I’ve never cycled my glow plug igniters.
The memory thing seemed to be more of a NiCd thing. But I’m just recounting what I read, I can’t claim to know that it’s gospel.

Some good points. Memory effect was certainly a NiCd issue primarily, but as I recall NiMh suffered from it to a lesser extent.
As far as cycling, there is not only the capacity issue, but does it not also produce a higher final voltage? Not so important with glow igniters, but a big deal when cars were powered my the cells.
These are old technologies, they should be well understood by this point. Maybe some of my "rules of thumb" are outdated, I learned pretty much everything I know about sub C cells in the pre Internet days. I can say that I have batteries I've been using for 10-15 years that are going strong.
I appreciate the feedback, thanks for watching.
