Bonanza Mine Trail Hike

  • A series of videos taken while hiking the Bonanza Mine Trail in McCarthy, Alaska. One of the support mines for the Kennecott Mine Complex, Bonanza is found 4000 feet above Kennecott at 5700 feet on Bonanza Peak. This trek was part of a recent artist residency at the Wrangell Mountains Center, where I was creating work for an ongoing project entitled Stories Fading Fast.     the San juan mountains near ouray have some great mining country to explore with some secret spots most dont explore. You nailed it, thats gods country.i wanted to climb to the top last year but the weather was crap. thanks for sharing. now i want to go back

    I have made that hike a few times, and there is an entrance that is not iced over. I hope you explored that area a little more, theres another entrance a few feet above.

      How far back in can you go into the mineshaft?

    When I was 15 in 1985 I went up to that mine. While I am not proud to say is I went the bathroom in that room that went into the mine. I am glad to see it is no longer there. Yes, it was quite the pile....

    I hiked this same route in 1994, thanks for sharing this and your heartfelt dedication to the amazing history of Kennecott.
