This is such an important topic, and one that I think a lot of people get drawn into because of FOMO and social media. Like most people aren’t actually collecting every PSA 10 SIR and alternate art out there. But that’s the way it seems right? I make the fun out of collecting from my own drives and thankfully that’s worked nicely thus far. For instance, I’m a lugia collector first and foremost. I’ve found a bunch at local card shows and instead of buying PSA 10s I’ll send them in myself and regardless of what grade they get I got to enjoy “going out in the wild” and finding them on my own. I that’s my fun and it has nothing to do in the end with their value as best as I can help it. Awesome stuff man, absolutely love the discussion 👍
This is, honestly, the most helpful video on Pokemon collecting and investing that I have seen. I started collecting for the nostalgia just a few months ago. That evolved into getting new collections. Then I found your channel and I was able to really think through my purchases, why I was buying packs of cards to open and found that saving to buy single cards to add to my collection is much more cost effective. This information is extremely helpful, especially for people like me who fall for the FOMO and are working to be more strategic. Thanks for the content!
I loved this video. You have touched on this many times but I want to bring it up. If you purchased a card a year ago on credit, and a year later the card keeps the same value, you essentially lost money due to the interest of the credit it loan. People need to remember buy what you like, don’t fomo, and only purchase at the level that your financial circumstances allow.
Thx for the Vid phil, I was at a fork in the road figuring out which direction I was going in terms of Coll/Inv and your vids helped me find a good medium and set realistic goals. Thx brother.
I appreciate this video because I just got back into collecting and am definitely in the that honeymoon phase of just spending like crazy. As someone who is trying to invest and collect at the same time I'm finding it hard to find the special median in terms of how to spend.
I started collecting about 18 months ago, I’ve always been a huge huge pokemon fan and getting into the hobby helped me so much with my anxiety and depression. At the very beginning I was excited about every single pokemon v, then S&V came in and I also started playing the game, and I’ve been spending quite a significant amount of money and time into both collecting and playing 😅 and now it’s like I don’t want every single card and I do have a pretty nice collection given the short amount of time I’ve been collecting. I got the SIR Shiny Mew, the Carmine SIR, the IR Magikarp, the SIR terapagos ex, from 151 I got all the SIR and IR except for the dragonair. And a lot more, all pulled by me or just buying singles. I haven’t been opening that many packs recently. So it feels like everybody has more cards than me, but it’s not true, not everybody is collecting every card and I should feel happy and proud of my collection ❤️ I appreciate your videos, you always make me reflect on my buying habits 😅
@@BavarianPokeWorld yeah it's my favourite all time set. I had this thought too so was thinking it may be smart to try and master set it all now before hype for the new one causes spikes.
Great content as always - happy to see your channel grow as looks like your subs have been taking off, Im old enough to remember below 2k subs Phil. Well deserved!
As someone getting back into collecting Pokemon after a long absence. (Literally had no idea they changed the borders from yellow until about a month ago). THANK YOU for this video! 🙏 It can be both overwhelming & FOMO inducing as a hobby lol
Personally I set myself a monthly budget and have a plan of what I am going to buy for the next few months. For example this month psa 10 Lugia v, next month a case of Pokémon centre surging sparks etb, the next month save my collection money towards a psa 10 umbreon etc etc so I have a strategy of what I am going to buy and it doesn’t put me into financial difficulty. While sticking to this strategy I have experienced what has been said in this video and have actually got cards cheaper than I would have if I fomo and bought as an impulse buy 😄 thanks a always for the great content!
Here is some advice collect cards and invest in Sealed booster boxes. But mostly have fun. You make more money working and not spending then investing in cards.
Good video and an important message! You touched upon the consequences of getting into debt, but if you also add credit card interest payments to cards dropping value, you can really understand the cost of FOMO and panic purchases!
Another benefit of waiting is that it’s so easy to get caught in the hype that sometimes I go after cards I don’t really want and then when I get the card I’m sorta meh about it. On the other hand if I had waited I could’ve gotten it at a better price or lost interest altogether and spent money on a card that I wanted a lot more
My break was 16 years. I understand I'm not like most. Until you meet other like minded people. And with my old knowledge and listening and seeing what the world looks like today from visiting to collectible shows. I feel like I'm doing great since my kid won't see these for some years, by the time he's ready to be interested or not interested we'll cross that bridge when we get there. It's all about the journey and it's been great so far. Cheers everyone.
Hey Phillip, i am thinking about buying 2 scarlet and violet era booster boxes to keep sealed for the long term. What is your opinion for the best 2 to buy. I love your vids and even a reply will make my whole school holidays amazing! Have a great day, fellow aussie:)
Can you do a video on other TCGs like dragon ball. I really liked that video. I have no dragon ball cards but it’s kinda interesting seeing them in the card shop.
Booster boxes, especially, are more the signature investment product that you should get in early and pick up what you can later. The prices don’t seem to fluctuate that quickly. You don’t need to fomo into something that’ll sit in your closet for years. What, you wait a month and pay $10 more? Big whoop.
You can catch them all if you are financially savvy and if you’re blessed but honestly wtvr joy people get from what they can get should be enough to enjoy the hobbie
I became also infected with the Honeymoon virus when i started 4 Months ago. I bought in the first 3 days 1x Evolving Skies for 600€ 1x PSA 10 Lavados, Zapdos, Aktos GX Tag Team Black Star Promo 100€ 1x 151 Booster Bundle for 60€ What a start 😂
I somehow managed to buy the Moonbreon PSA 10 yesterday for E890! Not sure how because when I looked at the 'closed deals' on eBay, they were around £1200 average! 😆
I just brought my first Pokemon Battle Box. Coming from YGO you spend fortunes on decks that last a limited amount of time, then when the decks not meta the prices dump, then the cards get reprinted in new rarities that look cool, so your current staples are worth less, and you FOMO the new cards. And on top of that when you play Masterduel you have to spend a fortune to build decks in that, and everyone claps because it keeps the game free to play? Is it though. Correct me if I'm wrong but Pokemon, the chase cards are optional for collectors, you don't actually need a Moonbreon to play the game.
Yeah I made a list of cards I want but crossed out chilling reign and fusion strike because they are too expensive. Just focusing on 151 and a few singles of sets after 151. I bought a rayquaza vmax for $370 at the beginning of the year
I at least want moonbreon. It's so hard to find good deals on Evolving Skies, but I've managed to open maybe 250 packs of ES over 2 years. I've gotten lucky with pulls, getting the vmax alt art rayquaza, v dragonite, and v umbreon, but I know I will never be able to stop ripping until I pull moonbreon myself.
Yup, you gotta think about what % or your current vs future income you might be spending on the card and how much you think the card really would go up in that time a la FOMO
I agree that you shouldn't go in debt when collecting but comparing a PSA10 3 years ago to now versus ungraded 3 years to now is not apples to apples.Umbreon Max Alt Art was like $200 - $300 ungraded when it came out. Now it's over 3x that amount unlike PSA10 which barely moved because there's so many 10's out there. Graded cards do not move the same as non graded cards. Plus for modern cards a lot of people want to grade them so more PSA 10's come out which therefore may not give you much appreciation over a few years.

I appreciate this video because I just got back into collecting and am definitely in the that honeymoon phase of just spending like crazy. As someone who is trying to invest and collect at the same time I'm finding it hard to find the special median in terms of how to spend.
Set a budget for collecting each month and stick to it no matter what. Buy one of each booster box each set and that's it.

I buy cheap rocket cards that are lightly and even sometimes, border moderately played. They're not junk to me, I enjoy them and they are affordable.
Good choice :) TR is one of the best vintage sets. And I think it will get hyped next year when the new Rocket set comes out.

151 Japanese set is one of my favorite right now, but it can be expensive if you want to collect the Master balls too.
Yeah absolutely. Are you trying to master set it?
@@phillips.collectibles Yes, currently missing just a few full arts and most of the Master balls, they are hard to get.
151 may likely be the only set I ever complete. I want every card from the basic to the masterballs. I want English and Japanese.
Have you thought about buying singles or trading?
Just got in to collecting yesterday so thank you
Awesome video as always man!
Definitely 100% correct FOMO is a real problem especially if you really like Pokemon. Hopefully one day we will be able to buy every set without care😂

good advice , you have a new subscriber.
Collect the cards you enjoy.
Chasing down all the $100+ cards from every set purely from a monetary perspective is a fools gambit.

It seems like if you pull a chase card to immediately sell it before it goes down right?
Sort of, it depends. Some cards explode as well, very hard to tell!
