  • Like most nomads in Mongolia, Purevjav is a hunter. Lured by easy money, he caught a few wolf cubs and raised them to sell their pelts. But the old man soon realizes that he violated a sacred boundary between Man and nature. In front of our cameras he expresses his dilemma and takes an irrevocable decision.

Just to add a little bit of context, the nomadic people of Mongolia live off of the land. They depend on the land for everything, they don't have the option to go to a store and buy groceries. They rely on their herds of sheep, goat, and horses to survive. If there isn't a annual hunt of wolves then there will be overpopulation. The wolf population needs to be maintained at a certain level so there will be balance. Everything in nature has a balance. There is a set amount of predators and preys, when the predators become too many then the amount of prey goes down thus starving the predators. When there is few predators then there is many prey. It's a cycle.

In Mongolia they have a traditional dig called the bankhar used to fend off wolves. Killing wolves will lead to over desertification increasing the gobi. These dogs need to be reinstalled.

Because it leads to more wild sheep and goats in the environment. This causes overgrazing of the land to occur due to no main predator.
